While looking for activities to do in Crested Butte during a shoulder season, we stumbled upon horse riding. We jumped on the opportunity of a new way of seeing the trails on horseback and reserved a hour and half trail ride at Taylor Canyon via the phone. We arrived about 10 minutes before the scheduled time (10 am) at the Almont stables and a few ranch employees, some gorgeous horses, and other guests were there to greet us to fit us into our helmets (for those of us who needs them). A few moments later, Chuck arrived with more horses, two cute doggies and our guide - Carol. The guests were then split into two groups - one experienced group and one relatively new riders. After the experienced group chose their ride for the day and took off, we (the newbies) got to bond with our horse of choice. All the horses were well behaved, gorgeous, we were helped onto the saddle while Chuck adjusted our stirrups accordingly. My friend's horse immediately start digging into the hay on the ground (nom, nom, nom). After a short orientation on how to make our horse go all directions (left, right, forward, backward, stop), we were ready to go. The view was breathtaking with the sun smiling down at us, we climbed to a perfect view into the Taylor's Canyon and marched in a single file into the distant Flat top and Red mountains, our guides Carol and Chuck was constantly chatting with us, answering our questions and did safety checks of our stirrups at regular intervals. At no point did I feel anxious being a first time rider, my ride Thunder was the perfect gentleman and followed closely after his friends the entire way. On the way back, we were facing the distant and beautiful San Juan mountains. We learned tons about the local area, random facts about wildlife while enjoying the scenery.

We booked far in advance as we were told there were only a few spots left. However, when it was pouring rain that morning, the trip went ahead and we were informed that they hired the second guide just for us, and they charged us the full amount. I would strongly recommend you not book your trip before you check the weather close to the day of your planned excursion. It does look like they made it, but I felt that CB Mountain Guides did not stand behind their word. They said the guides felt the trip could be done safely, however, the weather conditions did not seem safe to us. As an aside, when we were making our decision about the trip, we asked one of the guides about the anticipated trail conditions. Rather than answering our question, he told us that if we did not feel we could make it all the way to the top, it would be ok only to proceed a part of the way. My wife and I are avid runners and have done numerous hikes in Yellowstone, Grand Teton, the Adirondacks, Aspen and Crested Butte. My concern was not about the duration of the hike, but the conditions and quality of the trail. I did not appreciate the assumption we were unable to complete the hike. However, that may just be my crankiness now that I have reached the golden age of 45.

I randomly found Crested Butte Mountain Guides online when preparing for a recent trip. I had never…read morebeen in snow before so I was very appreciative that they could offer guides who are patient and good-natured (thanks Karina & Matias). A local of Crested Butte told me that these guides are known for leading experienced skiers and climbers, but I think they are also excellent for helping a cautious newbie like me become acclimated to even moving through the snow! I look forward to my next trip to Crested Butte and I will be sure to call again.

Our private tour of the…read moreDead Horse Point Singletrack on April 11th was a massive disappointment, largely due to Rim Tours' misleading staff and lack of basic safety protocols. Before booking, I explicitly called their office to inquire about the trail's difficulty. Their representative adamantly assured me that this was an easy, beginner-friendly ride. That was completely false. The trail features rocky, technical terrain. When confronted about this later, management simply pointed to the "intermediate" label on their website, completely ignoring the blatant misrepresentation by their own sales team over the phone. To make matters worse, we were caught in a severe storm. While I understand a standard "rain or shine" policy, we were exposed to active thunder and lightning out on the trail. A competent outfitter would prioritize safety and pull their clients off an exposed plateau during a lightning storm. Instead, because we had to end the ride early to avoid being struck by lightning, Rim Tours hid behind their cancellation policy and refused to offer any kind of refund or credit, claiming the guide deemed it "appropriate to proceed." If you value honest communication and your own personal safety, do not book with Rim Tours. They will tell you whatever you want to hear to get your credit card, and once the tour starts, you are completely on your own.
