Being new to the region, my husband and I had no idea this campground existed. Had we known, we would've booked here instead of at the Anthracite Loop at Paonia State Park. THANKFULLY we didn't. Upon arriving, we discovered the State Park has no drinking water. It was our fault, I should have read the entire email confirmation. We saw Kebler Corner next door and thought for a price, they would help us with water. (Never in our wildest imagination would we think any business would deny water for payment. We were about to find out how wrong we were). I contacted the young lady at the counter and related our predicament. "Let me check with the owner". Shortly thereafter, the owner approached me & related they don't have enough water & suggested driving back to the town of Paonia to look for water. She then when into a tirade about how she begged to State of Co. not to build a campground next to theirs. (I was later told by a State employee that the owner's have had a history of disputes with the State over the construction of this seven site campground). I was about ready to cry when she related they would make a couple of phone calls to see if we could find water. During this time, unbeknownst to me or any staff member, my husband had located their water supply and was filling our tank. While this was happening, I asked if there were sites available at their facility, even though we had prepaid for three nights at the Anthracite Loop. I advised her that I would have to check with my husband first, but in the interim, she suggested booking one night and by doing that, she would allow us to fill our water tank. When I returned to our rig, I discovered that my husband had filled the tank. I explained our options, & we agreed to pay $55.00 for one night for the water we were supplied & stay at the site we had prepaid. I returned to the counter to pay for one night & encountered the owner on her golf cart. I advised her that my husband had already filled the tanks & wanted to stay where we had prepaid. She asked where he filled. "I don't know". She expressed (fake) concern that we may have filled with irrigation water & confronted my husband while seated in our truck over his "gall". My husband said not one word to her. I said to her, "please don't do this". "I'll go into the office & pay for one night". "Oh, I'll go with you". I paid the money & we drove back to our campsite. Unfortunately, it didn't end there. The owner's husband confronted my husband at our campsite & accused him of insulting his wife, trespassing, & stealing water. He further stated that he came to our site to collect our license plate & call the Sheriff. I stepped between the two & was able to calm the situation. We thought that would be the end of it. A few minutes later, he returned & announced that since we paid for one nite, they would allow us to dump our tanks. My husband & I surmised that he realized what a jerk he had been & wanted to redeem himself. We agreed that perhaps they had had their share of unruly campers during the last few months and were excited to close for the season. On our last morning, we drove over to dump our tanks. We discovered a pad lock on the system. The owner's husband approached us. I smiled & said, "Good Morning". Without looking at me, he said, "I spoke out of turn. We're full of campers, we don't have the capacity". He turned around and walked away. I checked their website once reaching cell service and they had 19 sites available.
Sadly, I was going to inquire as to their reservation policy, as we thought we would like to stay in the future. Upon glancing at the RV sites, I discovered the rigs are nearly on top of each other. There is no privacy at all. Furthermore, I read all of their rules, rules, rules, and more rules on their website. This husband and wife team are two of the most unfriendly, unwelcoming, and confrontational duo that I have ever met in my life. Clearly, this duo does not belong in the hospitality business. It's quite obvious they harbor great disdain for the State of Co. and anyone that has the audacity to camp at Anthracite Loop.
Also during our stay, a yound man entered the campground looking for the host. He related he stopped at Kebler Corner seeking help in reporting a fire 15 miles up the county road. They refused to call for help or provide him with wi-fi to enable him to call for help. Instead, they directed him to our campground and told him to see the camp host. The Ranger & spouse had departed 45 minutes earlier. We assured him we would notify the Ranger upon his return. He told us he'd call authorities once he got into cell service range. Shortly thereafter the Ranger returned. We briefed him, he hurriedly changed into his uniform and flew out of the campground in his enforcement vehicle. After returning, he updated us by informing us the proper authorities were on scene and we weren't in danger. read more
