Oski Wow-Wow! Whiskey Wee-Wee! Olee! Muckie-eye! Olee! Berkeley-eye! California! Wow! Leaving his boy Sherman behind, Mr. Peabody has to go way, way back in his WABAC machine for Ed's 700th review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YunO4Wc8E28). Way before Yelping existed. When men were men and reviewing was for sissies who talked like Mr. Belvedere (...or maybe like McLovin in "Superbad"). That's when I was an undergrad at Berkeley and a lowly sales clerk for most of my years there. I came back to the old campus yesterday to go see the David Daniels concert at Hertz Hall. It wasn't the first time, but this was actually the first time I seriously perused the ASUC store since I graduated lo these many years. When dinosaurs ruled the earth. But the funny thing is very little has changed in terms of the layout of the bottom floor of the store. Still the same sweats and T's. Cal golf balls. Cal mugs. Enough bearware to supply a year's worth of karaoke nights at the Russian River Resort. Even the kids looked the same. That was me. Yes, I was the geeky one who prided myself on how well I folded the T-shirts on the sales table and how I memorized all the price points for the class rings. I was so proud at how quickly I plowed through sales transactions on the ancient cash register with the IBM adding machine noise. I remember I had my first doobie in the backroom. That's when I started to sell the $5.99 pairs of Cal shorts for $599 and asked if I could call to validate their credit card limits. Only I kept giggling when I asked. Oh well. Lilly loved me. She was an older black woman who helped stock the shelves with us young whippersnappers. Lilly must have seen us come and go with the years, and I loved her because she used to bring homemade cookies which we could only eat in the stock room, which was where I had the doobie. Gee, I loved that stock room. Now I see it's an elaborate office for somebody who must run things there. The second floor here is all new to me. All the manly stuff is up here. I looked at a sweatshirt we used to sell for $9.98 back in the day. It now sells for a whopping $48. What price spirit? The times, they are a-changing. It was fun walking down memory lane here, but Thomas Wolfe is probably right...you can't go home again. Go Bears!

Desk accessories, keychains, and jackets are downstairs. I didn't want a baseball cap or flip flops, just onesies as a souvenir. I usually get a hoodie but didn't here for some reason. (I guess there wasn't one on sale.) If there's a line at the register go to the cashier in the back or upstairs. The second floor is full of t-shirts. This is actually not in the ASUC building but the one next to the Union garage.

I've shopped here frequently over the years. About a year ago I bought a sterling silver ring here…read morewith a blue stone. Unfortunately, the stone turned into a greenish brown color. I stopped by today to ask about it and was prepared to simply buy a new ring-- it was fairly inexpensive. The store was empty, and there were two people working there who did not greet me when I walked in, as they were busy complaining loudly about someone. I stepped up to the counter, and despite the workers standing behind the counter, and one person looking at me directly, they still didn't greet me. At one point, one looked like she was coming toward me, looked me in the eye and then grabbed her beverage and turned away. Finally I asked directly for help. I showed her the ring and asked to look at the identical one behind the counter. She got very nervous and told me they hadn't seen a stone turn brown before. She immediately told me that she would not contact the company for me, that I needed to do it myself. I hadn't even asked her to. She kept saying things like "well if it had been two weeks we maybe could help you." to which I responded, "do you expect a ring to turn brown after 2 weeks?" She then said she couldn't contact the company because they would "ask her questions" she didn't know the answer to. I have no answers either why a stone would turn brown with occasional wear, no chemicals, etc. I would think they would want to talk to the company about this if they are selling jewelry that turns brown. Anyway, I was just really turned off by the fact that they had an empty store, but yet basically told me I had to contact the wholesale distributor myself. It really seemed like these two are doing everything they can to do the least work possible! I typically think a nice thing about shopping at a local boutique would be the customer service.. not here. I did not buy a new ring, and will not shop here again.

I got some aloe for my husband to use after shaving. I got vinegar and bc it's so potent I only needed to fill my container halfway and then the rest with water. I also got some liquid laundry detergent that I have to try. Overall, love the space and employees who are kind and informative. Will def come again

I purchase my first reusable boba straw here some years ago! I belatedly but also recently found out about the "seed library" which is a cool concept of giving & receiving seeds. It's how the collection keeps going with community input. I do not have a green thumb at all, but was motivated to take care of more flora by my workplace that gave out seeds as part of a "garden of growth" theme. I now have a huge thing of potting mix so I thought why not just plant a bunch all at the same time??... was my concurrent thought at the time so I took a few vegetable varieties. (I only grow what I can make use of, except pollinators I give a special exception for.) I believe Rockridge library, where I am closer to, is also adopting one seed library too! Hopefully, I can train to be a better plant mom and will be back with my own stash of seeds!
