Love the saisons and the ambiance (very fun indie music, better decoration inside than most Ballard breweries) but wow the food really leaves a lot to be desired. Despite being an avid reviewer, I'm not a very picky person. I'd eaten here before with the prior chef and had some good food, I got the fries and the Tajin Kale Salad. The salad had no taste of Tajin and the "crispy" chickpeas had the texture of something that had been fried then put into tupperware while hot--they were very mushy and tasteless. The dressing was creamy with next to no other notes. The kale was well-massaged but $14 for a salad that had no flavor other than generic creaminess is a huge miss. The fries were McDonald's fries with less flavor than McD's--they were not seasoned and tasted like old fry oil. The aioli they came with was flavorless and costs extra. Super disappointing for a $30 meal (after tax and tip). The saisons available are amazing--if you're only coming here for beer, I'd definitely give it a go! The service left a lot to be desired. The staff who helped me was very off-put when I asked for a recommendation, so I just asked for the most tart option. She did not ask what size I wanted or tell me the name of the drink I got, just handed it to me and walked away after I paid to go help someone else. I have enjoyed visiting this local brewery a few times since moving to Ballard. I am so glad I discovered it as it's quickly become one of my favorites. I am a big fan of saison style beer and this is what Fair Isle specializes in! It is light and carbonated - a Belgian pastoral style of brewing that reminds me of a dry cider or bubbly wine almost. They are constantly releasing new delicious brews, each one seemingly better than the last. The other great thing about Fair Isle is the food truck pop-ups! Each week they have various food pop-ups to enjoy while sipping on your drink. I have tried the Outsider BBQ twice and loved it. The staff are very friendly and helpful here, offering recommendations and giving samples if requested. There is a lot of inside seating as well as plenty of outside seating to go around! Fair Isle has quickly become one of my favorite breweries in the Ballard brewery district and in general! First, they feature farmhouse beers, which are quite a bit different than your regular craft beer. It did take me a few visits to get more accustomed to this style of beer (saisons, etc.) but I'm now hooked! I like how these beers are lighter, yet still flavorful and you can order most of them in a smaller size (perfect if you want to taste a few) or the larger size. The staff is very helpful if you describe what type of beer you're looking for (and the descriptions of the beers on the menu board are helpful too). What also makes Fair Isle amazing is the number of pop-ups and events that they host! We've loved getting to try some of these pop-ups (paired with a tasty beer). Some notable pop-ups we've tried recently (and come back a second time for) are: Good Morning Tacos and Outsider BBQ (and Hamdi, before they got their own brick & mortar). Fair Isle Brewing is amongst the cluster of breweries in the area, just a bit on the outskirts of the rest. It isn't to be missed though and actually suits it being that there isn't as much foot traffic. It gives Fair Isle a bit more an "exclusivity" to the rest. Fair Isle has a nice setting, the back patio is covered for a nice indoor/outdoor but a fair amount of outdoor counter seating as well as indoor seating. The decor also includes barrels which supports some of the beer's aroma and flavors. On my most visit I had the Syrah and Mataro, two red beers very similar to each other but the Mataro has an oakey taste and smell - I like it. The Syrah is smoother however with slight cherry notes and flavor - definitely my favorite. I had taste of the Mei Zi as well - also good, with a bit of zing in the after taste but not too much. It seems Fair Isle makes tries to distinguish itself from the other breweries as it just looks fancy and sophisticated. The layout, the glass room, the furniture. It looks like you're hanging out in some rich mogul's wine cellar, except it's a beer cellar and its beer you're drinking. Some of it looks like wine though, a lot of Fair Isle's beers even come in bottles. Posh. If you're looking to fancy up your beer experience while brewery hopping, come to Fair Isle. read more

The food comes from next-door, the Cleaver. Lots of smoking and roasting. Potato wedges were cold and rubbery and the skins were tough. Sauce was good but not my favorite. A beautifully-designed taproom tucked into the heart of Ballard brewery district. We stopped by for a friend's birthday on a Saturday night and were able to find a table for all of us to sit around! In comparison to some of the others in the areas, Fair Isle caught my eye as a more sophisticated space with a unique beer and wine list. The interior feels like a wine-cellar aesthetic and the glassware design was so pretty! The bartenders here are very nice and were able to make recommendations for me based on what I usually drink. Their botanical and rose drinks were really fun -- not something that I'd usually try, but I'm glad I did. They had food available on site and my roommate and I shared a shrimp po' boy -- it was a little on the pricier side BUT a delicious meal with a large potion size. When I came to Seattle I knew I wanted to visit Fair Isle Brewing. That was further enforced when literally every industry worker in the area I met recommended visiting the taproom. They are on the 'newer' side, only being open since 2018 - strange to say that's newer, but the craft beer industry is getting older and older nowadays. The fine folks at the brewery focus on mixed-culture Saisons and Lagers with the occasional other Farmhouse Ale style thrown in. When I saw the tap list I knew I was in the right place, with the section split into different types of Farmhouse Ales rather than the traditional Stout vs Ale vs Lager. We got four small pours to try a variety, focusing on the Fruit and Bold Saison section of their menu. Almota: A Farmhouse Ale aged in Oak featuring Eastern Washington grown Malted Grain. The local grain reminded me a lot of what people think of when they are traditionally asked about Farmhouse Ales. Think grainy, a little bit of hay, and just a hint of acid funkiness. Eleanor: A Farmhouse Ale aged in Oak re-feremented on Foraged Elderberries. The elderberry character was there, but didn't take the beer over as you still got that beautiful barnyard farmhouse notes that you want out of a Saison like this. Naledi: I had asked the bartender to pick a beer for us in the flight and this is what they chose. It is a Piquette-Inspired Farmhouse Ale with Mourvedre and Syrah Grapes conditioned with Foraged Lilac Flowers at packaging. Absolutely our favorite of the four. It was bright and botanical with juicy tart grape juice flavors. The aroma is reminiscent of a traditional Saison with a bit of spiciness and herbalism. Andes: A Dark Farmhouse Ale aged in Oak with Vanilla Beans and Chocolate Mint. It is inspired by an Andes Mint, but honestly didn't taste anything like it without the overwhelming milk chocolate and vanilla sweetness; however, this was still delicious. Dark cacao blends with the farmhouse character to bring another layer of complexity on a dark Saison. ______ read more

This place got put on my radar when every time I'd talk to my favorite brewers and beer industry folk around Seattle they kept mentioning how much they loved Fair Isle. And it's easily my favorite brewery to visit in Seattle so far. Not only is it the most thoughtful logistically, it's thoughtful from start-to-finish using foraged and second-use ingredients to make world-class beers and saisons while supporting local popup vendors making fantastic goods and food. The beer is uniquely local from the funky foraged flavor of the base beers to the constantly showcased local ingredients you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. Come see how local flora in the hands of a good brewer can make some of the most unique and delicious beers you've ever had. I gotta mention though, THE DUMP BUCKET. Why is this the only place that does this? Leave a dump bucket for people who can't/don't want to/shouldn't finish their beer and want to dump the extra instead of making staff do it or force them to finish it. As someone who likes to try different beers more than I like to drink a whole pint of beer, the dump bucket is enough to make me love Fair Isle dearly. But it doesn't stop there. The best glassware around with fantastic art, an amazing beer fridge full of 750 AND 375 mL bottles and a self-serve water TAP that's hooked up to water line and not just a container that is going to run out constantly and require staff to refill. Fair Isle is the most well executed brewery experience I've had in Seattle and it's already one of my happy places I love to patron. They have an impressive array of Saisons but they don't have many other selections, so if beers that err towards the more tarty side aren't your thing, this may not be the place for you. That being said, the brewery itself had a beautiful aesthetic and was wonderfully decorated, so it would be a fun place to come and relax with friends, even if the beer wasn't totally to your liking. They do have a covered outdoor patio that is pet friendly, and they do allow dogs indoors while you're ordering. It would have been nice if their food truck was better advertised, since it was difficult to see from the street that they had a food option and the menu wasn't very well advertised at the register. Our new favorite brewery! After months of anticipation, Fair Isle is finally here. And it's like no other brewery in Seattle. Even from the outside, this is evident...it's situated in kind of a cottage structure instead of a big industrial building. Once inside, it strikes a balance between cozy and chic with some major 70's vibes (the good kind!) and subtle Scandinavian feels. Seriously, they should win an award for their interior design/decor alone. I'm obsessed. Now, on to the beer: they are known mostly for their saisons here. We aren't normally saison drinkers, but Fair Isle is the kind of place that would convert us. The beers are funky, complex and nuanced with so much flavor. Mine was made with real elderflower and rosehips harvested from the Cascades and my partner's was a tangy, lemongrass concoction. We had two others that were equally good but I don't remember the exact ingredients. Side note: Their bottles in the fridge are just gorgeous and I need to take some home one of these days! Yes, they don't allow dogs here and they don't have any screens. Both of these are just fine with me--I love both dogs and TV but I don't think they need to be everywhere, all the time. I must admit it makes for a much more relaxing experience without the constant barking and noise. In that sense, I'd say Fair Isle feels more like a winery than a typical brewery--except you can still bring your own food in, which is a huge plus for me! Pro Tip: Go to the Ballard Sunday Farmer's Market and pick up some fresh sausage and bread from Sea Breeze and Tall Grass to enjoy with your brews. You won't be sorry. read more

Reviewing for: Hosting a latinx pop up! Location: Street parking. They're on a street that gets many dog parents picking up after work so parking is limited (we went Thursday at 5). Nice thing is no pay to park! Not too accessible by public transport. Food: joint pop up market was happening: Garzon, siembra, la selva all had amazing food and sweets. With dry January, we weren't able to stay for drinks but will be back soon to try the new beer and see what the bathroom sitch is like. Space: this is SUCH a cute place but unfortunately covid led us to enjoy looking at the space from outside. Their outdoor space is pretty big and there are tents covering 6-10 tables and a benched area as well. From what I experienced there's a system for seating parties with their staff. The pop up order space held three different businesses and it was all outside which made me feel better about leaving my home to pick up food. Tips and Tricks and Covid Deets: Hand sanitizer at every turn, reserved tables, people cleaning spaces after people leave. Processes in place if you're one to enjoy outdoor dining. Overall: Can't wait for post-covid so I can drink the beers and safely try more pop up foodS. Shoutout for the fact that they're hosting POC pop ups. Will be back. The brewery is located in a small alley so if you just walk around the Ballard mainstays, very easy to miss out this amazing place Not like other kid- friendly breweries, this is an adult taproom with a modern and elegant interior serving excellent saisons, barrel-aged, and Belgian farmhouse styles. We learned from the owner that they have a saison using a brand new wheat strain (Salish Blue) developed at the WSU King Arthur Bread Lab in Skagit Valley. We are not even a fan of saison in general, but all of the beers we had, had very unique tastes with full and well balance of flavors. Highly recommend this place. read more
