TL;DR this is my favorite gym in DC. I have been coming here for three years after basically going…read moreto every big box gym (Gold's, WSC, PF, etc) and could not be happier that I did. This gym has everything that you need to workout whatever you need to workout. Weights, machines, etc. All great stuff and they always update them. What is special is how nice everyone is -- from The owner, employees, trainers, and the people that workout here. It actually feels like folks are invested in each other's fitness goals. So yes, come here. It is awesome. 10 out of 10.

I would have definitely signed-up for their premium membership has I known that this type of…read moremembership provides nutritional counseling. I'm actually paying for a separate Nutritionist who I visit about every month. I started here about two months ago, and I've been much more committed this time around. It's even more motivational that the gym.is located literally across the street from my apartment. It's a decent gym and they have almost everything that I need, minus the abs machine. I do have the Gold membership and I think that it's a good fit for me since I rarely have ever participated in any type of gym class. They do offered the classes here, and I've seen a number of people leaving from a class. I appreciate that the gym is available for whenever I need it, and even more importantly that they're located so close to me.

I've been a member of this gym since the day it opened, & I continue to be very pleased with it…read more One of the biggest pluses is that it's HUGE. The building is a repurposed elementary school. So it has charm as well as enough space that I never feel cramped. I also appreciate that staff members go out of their way to make sure I have a positive experience. They are courteous as well as professional & personable--always ready to talk baseball with me when I want! Finally, I want to mention that the owners/managers are constantly updating both the facility & the equipment.

First, the good. I've been a member for about a month now, and there is a lot to like about the…read morefacilities. Everything is what you would expect for the price point of the gym, and free parking was an important part of my decision since I drive in from east of the river (we only have planet fitness over there, sadly). The complementary training session is good, I know it's meant to sell personal fitness sessions, but if that is something you are into, it might be worth it. Now the gross/ugly: There is a stated policy that "regular swimwear is required" to use the spa in the locker room. Some women have decided not to follow this policy and get in naked, without showering off first, no less. When I said something to the staff, she rudely told me that it was DC law that they couldn't enforce that, told me I could follow her upstairs to talk to a manager while I was standing on only a towel after showering off from the hot tub. And of course, she lied. The law says the opposite, I looked it up -- D.C. Code § 7-431 expressly defines a "spa pool" as a structure intended for bathing or recreational use whose water is not ordinarily drained and replaced after each use and may instead be recirculated. The same statute defines people using a swimming or spa pool as "bathers." More importantly, the District's Aquatic Facilities Regulations, 25-C DCMR § 202.1, specifically provide that rules for admission to spa pools and saunas "shall be enforced." The regulations also require bathers to shower before entering a spa pool or sauna. The regulations further address contamination directly. Under 25-C DCMR § 201.4, aquatic-facility personnel are required to restrict the introduction of "dirt, excreta, and other extraneous matter" into the water and to exclude people showing apparent signs of infection such as open cuts, wounds, rashes, or blisters. The same section specifically requires protective clothing for incontinent bathers. When I brought this to the attention of the membership manager (on duty) she just gave me the GM's card and corporate's email. I have contacted them and cited all DC laws which require them to enforce their stated policies. I know it's uncomfortable to ask people to follow rules, especially when they are naked, but by not enforcing their own rules (or enforcing them selectively, like insisting that nobody have a cell phone in the spa), they risk a decline in the quality and cleanliness of the gym, which is why people pay extra -- for a classy environment that is comfortable for everyone. So I give a huge thumbs up to the classes and the facilities, but unfortunately several of the attendants (all female, sadly, and I'm a girls girl) are at best unfriendly and often rude, and they selectively enforce their own health and safety policies to the detriment of the members.

Every year, without fail, vida raises prices. With this quite high fees, you get: wipes bins…read moreroutinely empty; dust/dirt - each, and I mean each, and every machine on the lower level is filthy - dust on the flat portion near the floor and a heavy dust ring at the base of the machines; machines, not broken, but missing parts - the sit down calf raise machine is and has been missing the knob you pull to adjust the height for you knees; other machines - bottom of steps look right and the sit down "chest" machine is missing the knob on one of the handles; aerobic area, one machine, to the right in the attached pic, has been broken (touch screen inactive) for going on a month and the machine on the left in the attached pic has it's running belt/foot pad rotating freely such that if you step on it, it rolls freely and will make you fall or at least it did me; and, I could go on. I'm not being a b_t_ch, I've reported these things to one trainer and the front desk. Not one person writes anything down and advises they'll let "someone" know. This has been quite routine over the years; that is, no reporting mechanism for what's broke.

I love this place!! I started going a few years ago. Everyone there, the staff and gym-goers, were…read moresuper friendly. The gym was like going to a night club. Down a long, narrow corridor, you enter a dark room with neon florescent paint. The dumbbells are neon, spaces on the floor are neon, paint on the wall is neon. The you notice the best playlists you can think of blasting in the background. This place works for me because I kinda hate working out but I do it out of discipline and for my health. The workouts here are fun and with the lights down low, I can move this jelly with no reservations. (not belly, jelly, you know the lose parts from the neck down? ) The environment is motivating and I see results from the workouts. However, I moved and since I had been missing this place but I always keep in touch with Coach G via stalking on IG because he's so sweet. Well Coronavirus hit. I was home. All gyms are closed. And I was thinking dang- how will I survive without any exercise?!? Boom! That's when I saw Coach G's post about "Sweat Anywhere. No Gym. No Problem." I quickly reached out, signed up (small monthly fee), and just like that I had access to live workouts with the same great trainers at the gym (shouts to Aaron, Sarah, Nazinga, & Stephen) and the lovely people who go there. 30min-40min classes of all kinds are available: HITT, boxing, strength, yoga, Barre, hip-hop step, etc. If I can't make the class live, no problem I have access to the video anytime. Instantly, I was hooked taking multiple classes per week and looking forward to actually seeing someone for a change. Fast forward a month on Sweat Anywhere and Coach G has added more items to this platform: guest trainers, doctors to answer questions, food discussions, happy hours, etc. This has become an all around health and wellness platform for me during this time. It's also given the me the chance to take classes I haven't tried before like Barre. I can take the fee classes from the nationwide companies but Coach G and his employees live in my community. I'd rather support this local business during this tough time. Besides the support they are giving me has exceeded what I expected when I signed up for access to classes. So looking forward to going back to their night club studio some day.

I signed up for the one week trial and had a great time! I was only able to attend four classes,…read morebut enjoyed each one. The instructors were really helpful and gave me some modification options. It would probably help to have some background knowledge of common lifts, but the instructors show the movements and they play on video screens if you need it. Everyone attending was generally in their own zone, so there isn't a lot of chatting because you really focus on getting the exercises done in the set times. I will say that the classes go by super quickly because you're always moving. Cons: The programming is set for the whole month. So each day of the week has its set program and you do that each week for the whole month. For me, this would get old (I really need variety). On the plus side, it does mean you get to see active gains throughout the month. The membership plan is a little pricey. I get why it costs so much, since they do have to cover rent and you only really attend during the class sessions. It isn't a type of gym where you just drop in when you want to use certain equipment. The unlimited monthly membership is $299, but in reality you are getting 30 or 31 classes depending on the month. Since the classes are the same all day, it is unlikely you would do two classes in a day, right? So the pricing is about $10/class if you do the unlimited monthly pass and you go every day. Some of the equipment was pretty smelly. I was at one station that honestly made me gag a little... I think the bench or maybe the dumbells had never been thoroughly cleaned with a bleach solution.

I'm writing a review for the body composition and RMR side of the house. I went in separately…read morebecause I goofed on my acronyms, so did the DEXA with Mike C and the RMR with Waseem. Both of those guys are top notch and know their stuff. (Side note: I don't give out five stars for much... I'm a fussy yelp reviewer when I bother to write a report.) I went in because I took up fitness during the pandemic and built up a decent strength and cardio game, but the body fat just isn't shedding. My home gym, and a weight loss program my doc referred me to both use Inbody, and I'm kind of tired of it. Mainly because when I started this whole fitness thing during the pandemic, physiologically I was a wreck. However, I've made a lot of good changes, and... the Inbody just doesn't move. Everybody always told me that the DEXA is the latest and greatest, and it was just a matter of finding one. Bodymass had the nearest one at a decent price. (There's others but they are $$$). My DEXA scan aligned really closely with my inbody report, so that itself wasn't an issue (now. Three years ago, different story.) But where things really go off the rails is with the BMR/RMR calculation. The Inbody report read 500 calories below my actual RMR! The real helpful thing from those guys was getting a target daily protein intake. They gave me a number I was never going to get on my own. With these guys, you get what you pay for and then some. They'll happily talk about other things they offer, but they're not in the business of upselling you on things you don't want. (That said, if I still can't get things moving in the right direction, I'll give their personalized macro thing a try and see what happens.) As I said above, I don't hand out 5 stars for much, but these guys earned it.

The instructors are very hands on and really watch your form and give corrections where needed. The workout isn't designed to be so crazy hard the average person can't do it- you can always start small on weights and you are encouraged to move up in weight when comfortable doing so. I so appreciate the lack of needing to do some insanely hard weight just because, forgoing form in the process. Love the instructors, love the workouts, love that they incorporate stretching as well. They also have nice locker room facilities and nice showers too.
