    Blink Fitness - South Orange

I have to be honest, before I went to this Blink location I was worried based upon the reviews…read morebelow. I can say honestly that my visit today was a mixed bag, but overall a good experience. Located in the same parking lot as a Stop & Shop in South Orange, Blink Fitness is in a medium-is sized building. When you enter you see the (relatively small) front desk. There was one person behind the counter and he helped check me in manually as the app was having some issues. When I told him this was my first visit he was very kind about offering to show me around if necessary. I thanked him and went to work out. I mainly used the open workout area which had two Bosu balls, plenty of Yoga balls, mats and foam rollers. There was a rack of smaller weights on the side. There were also boxes for jumps and some risers. Overall it was all the equipment you need for a pretty good body weight work out (which I always appreciate). Everything was fairly well organized and clean. I paid special attention to the ceiling tiles as I walked around and did not see any mold (but such things take time to appear if there is a problem). I also used a treadmill which worked without a problem. I was there around 8am on a weekday and there were plenty of free cardio machines. Most people seemed focused on the various weights and cable machines. The locker room looked clean swept and mopped. That said, there was a very curious smell outside the lockers and inside. I've been to plenty of gyms in my time and I know you're going to deal with some funk now and then, but this was something very different. It was bearable but I think they could do with a hit of industrial cleaners on the lockers, floors and shower walls to be safe. Overall I had a good experience and will be visiting this location again.

It appears over the last few years the facility has really gone into disrepair. It is not well maintained, sanitized or repaired. I came here to point out that there is visible varying shades of brown mold growing on multiple ceiling tiles in the changing room as well as in in the main gym space. So much so that I feel the need to stop attending this gym for fear of inhaling mold spores while I workout. The situation will continue to get worse as I observed more tiles with wet spots, which will eventually also turn moldy. I really wanted to give this location a chance however in order to preserve my health I will not be returning until the owner addresses these building issues.

I've been a member of Evolve for about 15 months and regularly take Yoga, Weekday Warrior (more…read morestrength based) and Alpha Burn (cardio and strength) classes. The yoga instructors each have a unique style which I appreciate. It's fun to mix it up each week. The classes are a little different than your typical vinyasa flow and might combine a slower flow with strength and core work, use of blocks, straps and other props, hip, heart and shoulder openers to counter all the sitting we regularly do, deep breathing, alignment and relaxation to end the class. Classes are small and Instruction is really individualized. Modifications are suggested if one can't do everything. The Weekday Warrior and Alpha Burn classes are similar, with Alpha adding more cardio into the mix. These are circuit-type classes where the students rotate exercises throughout. I love this time-based format because you work as hard as you can during the exercise period and then there's a short rest before the next exercise. Each class is a little different although exercises are repeated. These are small group classes with excellent instructors who correct form, suggest slight modifications if needed and really support your goals. Since I started at Evolve, my strength and flexibility have increased tremendously. I train consistently and safely. I have not suffered any injuries. Weight loss has not been my goal but I have lost body fat and increased muscle mass. Most important, I am healthy. At 50, my bloodwork is better than ever. Evolve is a wonderful community of trainers, instructors and clients of all ages with various fitness levels and goals. It's a welcoming place.

It's less of a spiritual practice than a light cardio workout. We go through the poses quickly, and repeat them almost like a circuit. After class, I feel like I've done some light exercise rather than limber and relaxed. I did enjoy classes with Hailee. She has great energy and goes around to help you out with your poses. If hot yoga/cardio is your niche, you will enjoy this studio. The instructors are kind and it's very welcoming place

Doors lock promptly when class starts, so don't be late! Our class was pretty crowded, over 20 people. We had five mats per row, pushed so that if everyone sat crosslegged, you'd probably bump knees with your neighbor. But it worked out okay. Most of the people who were taking the class seemed like regulars and they were fairly friendly. Overall, I really enjoyed the class, but I didn't really think it was geared that well towards beginners. The instructor called out poses instead of explaining them, and she walked around the room a lot so it was not possible to look at her for reference. Instead, I had to hope that the person in front of me knew what she was doing, since I was just mimicking her. Luckily, the woman in front of me was a pro, but it still made class kind of confusing. The class lasted over an hour. I really enjoyed the semi-meditative talk through at the beginning and end of the class. I felt like I got a good work out, and I felt mentally rejuvenated at the end. The studio has plenty of yoga mats if you don't have your own, as well as blankets, "bricks" (which I'd never used before, but they do help with some of the poses!), and small towels. There isn't really a private changing area, but there is a back space with sliding doors where they keep the aforementioned supplies. There are two sinks, hand soap, and a mirror there. There is also a water cooler in the front. I'd love to come back for this class whenever I have time. I don't know what their regular classes are like, but hopefully once I have a better work schedule I can try those too!
