I usually stay away from showering at the gym but you don't have to worry about that here) First day I run in with 2 minutes to spare, find my name, check in. Being a newbie, Mike helped me wrap my hands (thank you!!), passed me a pair of gloves (wraps & rentals come with the promo) and off I went. I thought "It's been a while since I've went to the gym & im out of shape but hey, the muscle memory will kick in. #lightwerk" BRUH. The class is held in a group setting, super fast paced and you just keep going at it. First warm ups and then you start practicing your punches. I was struggling but Greg walked me through how to do everything - the whole time the pace of the workout never stopped. Then came the glorious 5 minutes where we rested as he set up the room and explained how to do the different exercises - circuit style. You won't get bored because there's literally no time to be bored. My second class was with the fierce af Sonia and she also came around and walked me through proper form, never slowing down the pace of the class. Her arm workouts are crazy but maybe my traps and triceps will finally come out of hiding. My shirt was drenched after her 7am class. (I am NOTTTTTT a morning person but her class is worth waking up for) Honestly the best thing is that the instructors don't make you feel like crap when you struggle or need to fix something multiple times. They pay attention, step in when you need it, and definitely motivate/push you. After shopping all around town for a place to work out - and not screw around - it was the only one that fit the bill. It's got everything you need to get strong or huge (or whatever your goal) and nothing you don't. Its equipment is old but everything works. Feels like the Arnold years cast in amber, complete with old school bodybuilders on the walls. I had *negative* cell reception - not only did I not get any signal, I had to switch to airplane mode and back to ever get another signal after I left. This is a positive feature. I've only had one workout so far and so will update if my experience develops, but I had to express my sense of relief after shopping around about a dozen luxury daycares and finally landing on this place.

As someone who previously had a lot of gym anxiety, the space here is so warm and welcoming. Very beginner-friendly with coaches regularly providing form corrections and encouragement. Both the strength and sweat classes have helped me learn correct form and build my confidence in the gym. Coaches remember your name and make sure you feel welcome. I keep returning here for the great workouts and warm community feel. Rather than some gyms that can feel competitive or obsessed with the aesthetics, BSF is a gym where everyone is welcome. Highly recommend trying them out!

I'm someone who goes to the gym regularly with a coach who programs my workouts 4-5 times a week. Occasionally, I love to take classes like these to challenge my conditioning and endurance since cardio is something all of us strive to do more (as someone who primarily lifts). It's not only challenging but fun to see myself progress through the sweat each class I consistently go to. I recommend checking out their various classes and programs as it's friendly to all levels while also being a short walk away from all major train stations. At one point, a masseuse even asked if I was born without trap muscles because she couldn't feel them and then expressed doubt that I could lift a bottle of water over my head. This was obviously alarming, so I emailed Encore with the request of averting imminent death with a side order of vanity. And deliver they did. In the first month I saw visible changes in tone and body shape. It's been 3 months now and I feel better: more energetic and overall happier (either it's those endorphins or I'm just glad to not drop dead at any moment from a lifetime of inactivity). I also feel pretty great in a swimsuit. Throughout this, Damien has been a great guide. What I appreciate most is his experience and presence allows for the most efficient use of my time by removing decision making on my part. If I were doing this alone or in a group class, I'd waste time trying to figure out if my form was correct, if I was using something too light/too heavy, etc. Without his help I'd have spent a few fruitless months trying to work out and then give up after not seeing any results. Beginning exercising here was the best decision I made last year, and I'm slightly mad I didn't find Encore sooner and start this earlier in life.

I was just browsing Instagram, 4 a.m. to be precise, and saw an ad for The Fort. Something about it…read moresparked my interest so I entered my email address for more information. Later that day, at a more appropriate time (not 4 a.m.), Dan reached out and invited me to come see their facility on 21st street. They have two locations, one on 19th street which I've been told is more conditioning, and one on 21st street which is more strength training. Even though I work out regularly via boxing, cardio, hot yoga, krav maga, and lifting weights, I was nervous going to my trial class. I thought I'd be the weakest and look like a wimp in front of all these jacked and strong people at some CrossFit like moment. Fortunately, that was not the case at all! I trained with Kyle and there was no judgement at all (even though I was struggling benching feathers). To be honest, everyone is so busy trying to get the most out of their workouts that they are not concerned about what you are doing. The team is very welcoming and you are immediately motivated to get to work. The reason I wanted to give The Fort a try is because I wanted to get stronger, workout less, and lower my body fat %. I know I only took one class, but I can tell if I keep this up, I will definitely see results a lot faster than what I have been doing. I would say this is for anyone who wants to efficiently get in a workout, see results, and get strong in a friendly environment. I hesitated a bit because I am not a big fan of CrossFit and thought this was another CrossFit facility, but they really are not and they don't market themselves to be. I would say more of a circuit training setup that focuses on strength and conditioning.

Went to SLT Tread for the first time on a weeknight evening. It's located on Madison Avenue between…read more28th and 29th, right next to Scarpetta. I actually missed the entrance at first, it's a small black door with a sign. You enter a vestibule and take the elevator down to the studio. The space itself is well set up, with lockers, showers, and towels available. The class is 55 minutes total, split into about 26 minutes on the Megaformer and 26 minutes on the treadmill. I started on the Megaformer, which was primarily upper body and core-focused, with one or two leg exercises mixed in. I have taken a lot of SLT and the former Brooklyn Bodyburn classes, and while the workout was still challenging, the shorter 25-minute format felt a bit abbreviated. I think I might have felt differently if it had been fully focused on either core or legs. The treadmill portion was less dynamic than I expected. We did about eight 90-second intervals, rotating between flat and incline, with a sprint at the end. It felt somewhat repetitive, and compared to other treadmill-based classes, not especially engaging or varied. Overall, I am glad I tried it, but the combined Megaformer/treadmill format was not my favorite. I would personally recommend sticking with a traditional SLT class or a treadmill-focused workout like Mile High Run Club or Barry's. That said, the instructor was a good, she was super upbeat, clear with directions, and gave just enough time to transition between movements without breaking the flow.

I didn't expect that after reading some reviews so I was quite surprised. They also had individual rooms for shower, bathroom, and changing. The shower room came with shampoo, conditioner, and body soap in dispensers so you don't have to bring your own. There are a plenty of lockers with combo locks attached. The class felt a little rushed, especially during the megaformer session. It's mostly because it was our first time and we weren't familiar with the workout. The instructor was attentive and she came around every so often to keep an eye on my form, which I appreciated. But the instruction came so fast that sometimes it felt like it went in one ear and out the other. Each workout on the megaformer is pretty short, so the instructor will start to explain the next move while we're doing something else, and that made the workout more confusing, unfortunately. I am sore the next day so I know the workout was effective. If you're used to the workout, I believe the workout would be even more beneficial. It's nice to try new workout classes but I learned in the end that I prefer simply running or doing independent strength workouts with friends, at my own pace. I appreciate that SLT Tread has given me the opportunity to try their class, though!
