For some background - I am someone who has done strength training for 5 years and is familiar with gym equipment and how to perform different exercises safely and with good form. I decided to try EVF for the first time with their EVF class, which was open to everyone. The class was disorganized and overcrowded. The instructor speed-talked when showing us how to do an exercise with good form, and in a room of 30+ people, not everyone could even hear her because the music was too loud. And as people were working out, there were way too many people for her to actually monitor to make sure they are doing everything safely. The complete lack of focus on injury prevention and safety is a deal breaker for me. Instead, their focus is on making you sweat hard with weights to make you think you had a good workout - when in reality, you may not be activating the right muscles and are on your way to worsening your muscle imbalances and injuring yourself. Oh, and here are some extra fun details: -No one is EVER at the front desk. I had to pass by this gym 3 times on 3 different days because I wanted to talk to a human being to ask some questions before I signed up for my first class. They just have a desk there and equipment but no signs of life. Ever. -No one is doing audio checks before a class, so good luck hearing what your instructor is saying -The back office is the only area that seems to be staffed. Their focus is just sales, not about anything else. -The instructors are not knowledgeable in muscle anatomy and will have you doing reps based on time rather than on evenly working both sides of your body - another recipe for injury! This entire gym screams of red flags. Stay away. read more

I was an EVF Columbus Circle member from 2017-2020. In February 2020 I paid my annual membership in full for the year. Of course, in March 2020 gyms were closed, and EVF CC never reopened. I was in regular contact with management, asking for a prorated refund (also open to alternative solutions) and their responses indicated we would be able to figure something out. After years of me checking-in, and EVF telling me they were working on it, they stopped responding. Of course my February 2020 payment was never returned in part or whole. EVF received $400,000+ in forgiven PPP loans. I share this story to warn of EVF's business practices, and to warn future members they are engaging with an unethical (in my view) business ownership. If my story deters one or two members from joining, I will consider karma balance restored. read more

I've been going to EVF since late April. I can say I absolutley love it. Maybe not so much durign the actual WOD, but it's worth it. Seen awesome results in my overall crossfit ability, strength, and perfromance. The community is fantastic and have made some awesome friends along the way. I have started going to EVF in UES around April or May of 2021. I have been doing only the EVF360, which is no-barbell HITT/Crossfit class. I have nothing but positive experience with them. At the beginning, I was a bit anxious and embaressed, as I have put on a lot of weight during the lockdown and with the pandemic, so I was not sure if I would be able to do it, but Matt has been great. He does push you and encourages you and cheers for you when you are doing well. EVF360 attendants are from different fitness level, so I no longer feel embaressed to attend, and I have been a frequent since then. I am slowly starting to get the homey feel of CrossFit, and I hope I will continue to come back. I wanted to start a fitness program to get in slightly better shape for a strenious mountain trekking trip in Africa, and I felt the class has tremendously helped me boost my confidence, and push myself on the mountain, and it was a sucess. The space looks a bit older and has no windows, however the equipements are in great condition and they have wide variety and enough space even for a larger crowd, although would be nice if the space was. bit more organized but this does not bother me. Matt, Chris and Alex all move around and make sure to spot you. Please give it a shot, and be patient and try to come back even if you felt the first class was tough, I promise you will enjoy it. read more

I left EVF about a month ago along with several others and am truly saddened by the response on their part. While I did leave on my own accord to join a new competitor box in the neighborhood, what came as a shock to me was the reaction from the staff and the seemingly unfriendly way I was treated especially since I was generally treated in an extremely nice way by everyone up until that point. And by this I mean, more specifically, pretending to be your friend one day and the next removing you from all sorts of social media contact and breaking communication as if your relationship and existence never happened in their lives. I was there for 1 year and in my time there had reached important fitness/ health milestones as a result of the support of the coaches and community who have since left. My growth by way of Crossfit helped improve so many aspects of my life. I am thankful to have been welcomed warmly by Eric, the owner, who made me feel at home from the get-go. I would have never gone back for more or signed-up for On Ramp if it weren't for Eric. Although I have left, I would have loved to drop-in every so often in the future. It seems like disaffiliating also came with a bit of unfortunate resentment. Doesn't switching boxes happen all the time? I left NYSC like 3 times over the past 15 years. What gives? read more

I just have to give them a shout out because they deserve it. My buddy was telling me how he just started at a new CrossFit spot on Columbus Circle. I had done CrossFit for about a year at the BlackBox in Flatiron for a year - BUT I moved uptown and my wife and I had a baby. Needless to say, it had been awhile... so I decided to join up with him and start all over again. I called up the phone line, got some information and Julie signed me up. Fast forward about 30 minutes later - I had some real problems signing up for the same classes as my friend... Then CRAP - I realized my dumba$$ signed up for the WRONG BOX. I wasn't sure whether I would get push back or not, but i immediately emailed Julia, apologized and asked for a refund. Julie was quick to respond, extremely understanding and was happy to refund my money. To be honest, I wasn't considering them before (not knowing anything about them), but given how professionally I was treated by them in the midst of my snafu I MADE - I will give them a long hard look when deciding upon the box I join uptown. Drop whatever preconceived notions you have about Crossfit and go to EVF Performance if you want to be in the best shape of your life. I ran Division 1 Track and Field in college and can honestly say that working out at this box is the only thing that has come close to my training in college. All of the coaches here are great and really make you feel like you are part of a family. At the beginning of every class, you do an icebreaker with the coaches and other members so that you know who you are working out with. It's really a great system. I've met some awesome people at EVF. As for the workouts, they are insane (in the very best way possible)! You will leave every WOD drenched in sweat and feeling awesome! I've always been in shape because of my background in running, but I never had the core strength I had while I was at EVF. In just 3 months at EVF and a paleo diet, I looked and felt amazing. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get there because of some recurring back and shoulder issues I've had since college, but I can't wait to get back in there and work on my handstand pushups! Having never taken working out or sports seriously, never in a million years did I think I would join a Crossfit gym. Don't let the name scare you- it's awesome and accessible for anyone of any shape, size, or capability. I began working out here about 18 months ago and it's been transformative. Working out sucks- unless you're doing it in a fun, supportive, and energizing place like EVF. Before joining this gym, I knew nothing about HIIT workouts, Crossfit techniques, or Olympic barbell movements. The On-Ramp classes, followed by the skilled and friendly coaching staff made joining this community a breeze (and made making working out an easy habit to pick up). Technique and safety are paramount here and you'll never feel pressured to do a workout or movement you don't feel comfortable doing. With that being said, there's plenty of encouragement to safely push yourself and step outside of your comfort zone. Like most people, I was skeptical about cross fit. I've done kick boxing, had a personal trainer, spin class, but never really found a program that held my interest. I do best in group settings and this was kind of like a last resort for me. I wanted to do something that would challenge me and push me to my limits and I have found that with cross fit. I've been coming here for 7 weeks, and wondered why I hadn't come sooner! The WODs, burpees, hollow holds, box jumps, pull ups, they challenge my body and mind! I hate how I feel during the workouts, but love how I feel afterwards. The community and coaches are incredibly supportive and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. I tried this location using classpass and it is definitely a location to have in rotation. As with all crossfit, you are guaranteed a solid workout. When I walked in of course I was immediately intimidated. I also wasn't greeted with a warm hello as I do most fitness classes so thought "ugh!" But that soon changed. The instructor was actually very nice, friendly, and corrected my form in a supportive manner. It was a very solid workout and the other people in the class were nice and lighthearted. Don't let the location deter you. Hop on that crosstown bus and you will be there in a jiffy! read more

If you are looking for a GREAT strength coach - Dave Kirschen at EVF on W/F/Sat mornings is amazing. He's taken my squat from 135 to 180, my bench from 65 to 100 and my deadlift from 150 to 235 in about a year and a half (114 lb woman). He's an excellent coach and respects different goals. In addition to the strength gains, I look way better and feel like I'm in much better health because of the instruction and community here. It's not just in and out, but a real sort of family that I can draw on when I have fitness or life questions/needs. read more

EVF 360 is one of the hardest workout classes I have ever done at any NYC studio. Instructors are great and the community is the best. People come here to have a killer workout and are respectful and helpful. Instructors start the afternoon/evening classes with one or two fun questions that all students need to answer. It helps build this collaborative atmosphere. There is no mirror. It is not a fancy gym. But you will feel welcome and you will be so exhausted by the end, that you may find other fancier gyms very boring...and you will be back for another class. read more

Just a little update here...Over a year of training here and i love this place. The staff and people i train with have become like a second family to me. One that i actually look forward to seeing a few times a week! I've kept off the weight they help me loose and continue to get stronger, learn more moves, and do things i didn't think i was capable of doing. The level of professionalism is very high and i haven't heard of anyone injuring themselves which i think is a reason some people shy away from Crossfit. The only risk here is that you might become addicted to Crossfit and to EVF in particular. If Crossfit isn't really your thing then try the EVF 360 classes which i mix in with Crossfit. These are really fun and high intensity fitness classes. (Previous review) Very knowledgeable, experienced team. The owner Eric is a world class CrossFit athlete and lives and breathes fitness. The classes are fun and scaled to every fitness level so don't be intimidated or put off but all the intense talk around CrossFit. Their EVF 360 classes are all around butt kicking fitness classes that i personally prefer over the general CrossFit classes but try both then decided or mix it up. A personal testimony. I lost 15lbs over 3 months of training with no change in diet. I go to 3-4 classes per week. Lastly, the clientele themselves are a smart and friendly group of welcoming people so that adds to the experience. The classes too are so much fun you'll forget you're going to the 'gym'. EVF is what i have been waiting for! I have loved my time at EVF so far and can say it has exceeded my expectations. Their on-ramping programming not only creates a sense of community but really speaks to all fitness levels in being fully prepared for crossfit intensity. The work outs are fun and hit different muscle groups each session. Never did I think I would ever do bear crawls and burpees after my swimming career ended, certainly not voluntarily, and here I am paying to do them. As much as they stink, they certainly do tone all over. EVF is a cross fit gym which would usually scare the heck out of me but this hour long 360 class is my favorite - especially the outdoor version in the summer. It is a combination of strength and conditioning comprised of solely body weight movements and indoors, you add kettlebells, free weights, and boxes. And if I had any qualms about a "cross fit" class they were smashed after the first hour, the instructions are so encouraging! read more

A little pricey but their 360 Class will kick your a**, and the coaches are great people. They're encouraging, helpful with techniques, and most of them have great personalities / senses of humor. Though I'm personally on the quiet side, there's definitely and obviously a solid community within the gym. People are very friendly with one another, but aren't pushy or too invasive. They offer everything from cross fit, the 360 classes (high intensity circuit training), rowing, outdoor cardio (when weather permits), and even recovery opportunities like yoga and chiro/massage therapy. They also have open gym hours for monthly members. I highly recommend if you're looking for a change of pace / environment, and if you're looking for a sense of community. read more

Came here for a trial membership, very average workout in my mind but it was only one session so take it with a grain of salt. I have taken numerous classes before but no prior crossfit knowledge was needed for this circuit based workout. What a great gym. They offer a lot of different options depending on what class your looking for. They have row classes, gymnastics, CrossFit, and EVF 360 which is their signature class. I personally took the EVF 360 which incorporates HIIT workouts with kettle bells, wall balls, rowing, dumbbells, and many more movements. It's a great workout but the best part are the people here. Everyone is so inviting and welcoming. And coach Matt is amazing. He's encouraging and really works with you to perfect the moves. You won't be disappointed with giving this gym a try!!! read more

Best box in the city. Period. Here's the difference between EVF and other gyms, Crossfit or otherwise: Most gyms let you lift. EVF lifts you. I've been with EVF since they opened and they are terrific. Having EVF and the community in my life has been a godsend. You will get some awesome workouts in here. My only complaint after spending some serious time at this UES gym is the price. Yes - the coaches and workouts are AMAZING. And the community is also AMAZING. But if I'm going to pay $287/month I want a towel EVERY TIME I need one. I also don't want to have to worry about dropping or not dropping my weights/kettlebells/wallballs because the floor shakes. Get the floor re-done. Okay, so I have a 2nd complaint. I get that its a gym, but for the price, why are the policies always changing? First you had to cancel 8 hours ahead of time, then you had to cancel 12 hours ahead of time, then you get charged $15 is you late cancel which is ridiculous given the price you already pay to go here. They instituted the late cancel policy because they have too many members signed up who want to go to the rush hour classes yet they continue to advertise like crazy and offer groupons for 50% off when they don't have room for new members. And if I want to late cancel then I'm going to late cancel - don't make me feel bad about it if you're going to charge me a ridiculous $15. The office staff is very nice but basically the whole operation comes off as unprofessional and like I said, the rules are always changing. Workouts are great, but if you're going to have trouble making the classes because of health issues or work then be careful about what you sign up for and when. Its also easily one of the most expensive crossfit gyms in the city. I hope another box opens up somewhere in the 60s and 70s because it will surely cost less than this place. A "luxurious" and "chic" crossfit gym just opened up in murray hill and it costs less than this place. read more

I love EVF. It is one of the best decisions I ever made-joining here. I've been here for over a year and have become stronger, fitter and made some wonderful friends. The CF and 360 classes are excellent, but the standout for me is the Strength classes taught by Dave Kirschen. He is currently the title holder for 3rd top powerlifter in the country. If you want to learn excellent form so that you don't get hurt and become stronger than ever-then this is the class for you. Be forewarned that Dave is saucy, but an incredible coach and athlete, and his passion for powerlifting really shines through. I also give 5 stars for the Row360 class. Nicole is great at programming a fantastic class every week and she is great at checking your technique to enable efficient and powerful strokes. Since joining EVF performance several months ago, I lost 12 pounds and have been able add 25-35% more weight on my core lifts. The classes and exercises are extremely challenging and you find yourself stretching not just your physical limits but mental as well. I personally find the workouts more rewarding and enjoyable than the elliptical or cybex-like weight machines. It would be hard to ever go back! The best part of the gym is definitely the staff. They create a very friendly atmosphere in addition to providing encouragement and critiquing/correcting form. I would highly recommend EVF to anyone who is serious about improving their health and fitness level! read more

Awesome gym. Erik has brought back fun into working out. I haven't been this energized to get into the gym on a consistent basis In years. Everyday there is a new work laid out for you. So there is no thought. Just show up an get it done with the others in the 1 hour class. That is one of the greatest things about the workouts. They are done in a group class so you lean on each other for energy. Also, it caters to ALL levels. From someone that has never worked out before and is looking for a change to the very advanced fittest athlete. If you really are looking for results this is the place. It is a great community. Went here for their 6am signature 360 class. It was my first time in a crossfit gym so I was full of trepidation while observing the very packed 5am class that was in full on beast mode. I was ready to slowly walk out the door and sneak back home. Alas, the very fit instructor, Nicole, introduced herself and I was reassured that I'd be fine. This was their HIIT group class and I told myself I've survived other HIIT classes in NYC, I can do this one too. Class format was tough and efficient. I got a bit of everything (rowing, lunges, boxjumps,burpees, situps with weights, etc) packed into one fast hour. Nicole took the time to make sure people's forms were correct and encouraged when the tiredness started sneaking in. Also, loved her music choice. All in all was mighty glad I didnt puke or faint in front of everyone. There is a water fountain equipped with a sensor so bring a water bottle. There are also towels provided. I already scheduled my next 6am class and am looking forward to it. read more
