I've been at MMCF for over a year now, which is incredible when you consider that I've never been…read moreable to maintain a period of continuous exercise for more than a few months. If you're nervous about starting crossfit, this is a great gym to start off in. A majority of the coaches are women, classes are diverse across age, gender, and race, and they are queer friendly, all of which are very important to me! Every month they have a 101 class that's meant to be an on-ramp course to ease you into "normal" crossfit workouts. They often run deals on these classes that bring the price to around $50 for two weeks of 6 classes, with a deal of ~$50 for unlimited classes in the first month after 101. Membership prices vary depending on how often you want to come in during a week: 2x, 3x, or unlimited. The schedule offers a lot of flexibility--there are a few early morning workouts during the week, noon workouts on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and 5 pm workouts (and later) every weekday (5:30 on Fridays). The noon and 5 pm workouts mean that it's very easy to pop into the gym if you work in downtown Lansing and live elsewhere, as I do. On Saturdays they have morning workouts (usually partner workouts which are beginner-friendly) and Sundays they have open gym from 2-4 pm.

This is the first CrossFit gym (box) that I have been to. I have gone to other boxes and I really…read morelike the style at Mid Mitten CrossFit. They focus on form and everyone is required to go through the basic 101 class to learn the movements. The community is very welcoming and very encouraging no matter what your athletic abilities are or where your skill level is on movements.

What is CrossFit:…read more Constantly varied: different movements per session and within each session High-intensity: Your max effort Functional movements - Moves you do in everyday life - Squat, pull, jump, sit-up Designed for universal scalability (adapted for all levels and abilities) The workouts are an hour - that includes warm-up, Workout of the Day, and mobility (stretching) The schedule is plenty for anyone to find a slot that works for their schedule and class options are pretty cool. Try the paddle board class or one-on-one with the Coach. Clocktower-CrossFit is the newest BOX to open in Chelsea - located behind the old Teddy Bear factory; led by head coach Steve Koski, former coach at HyperFit. The owners' group of Clocktower came together to create a new CrossFit community in greater Chelsea area. Box just opened June 1st and they have all been very welcoming and encouraging, even though I am no where near their level of fitness. The facility is outstanding. A lot of space, open air and nicely appointed. A strip of turf runs along the back of the Box for warm-ups, mobility work (stretching out) and field-athlete training. There is plenty of equipment for when the classes get larger. TRX bands for adapted pullups, pushups, etc. Great bathrooms with shower and plenty of space for all of it. The owners have so much experience in the practice of CrossFit; I appreciate their attention to details - like the overhead fans to keep the air moving, the water bottle fill station and the hair ties in the bathroom for when mine breaks. It's the little things sometimes. Coach Koski also has a degree in nutrition. I am very optimistic of my ability to implement the life-style changes to my eating habits, under his instruction. I am not a complete novice when it comes to a balanced diet, however, I don't have the expertise and am happy to have found a Box and Coach that can help guide me. Clocktower-CrossFit is the ultimate CrossFit community Box. I cannot praise it enough. Contact them for a free class, get a 10-visit punch card to try it out for a few weeks, join the beginner CHIME class at a smaller membership fee, or do the all inclusive. There are so many options.

So, what can be said about a gym, a Crossfit gym, that has not yet been written 100s of times…read morealready? Well, from a first time crossfit participant, well, CHIME participant, I can say that this place rocks. I have done other, 'similar' classes, even taught a few, but this place is defined by more than their equipment and facility- it is defined by its people and its atmosphere. From day one, yes, you will see that the gym itself is immaculate, but it is the welcoming people that make up Clocktower Crossfit that make the difference. The head coach, Steve Koski, has a deep knowledge, both practical and academic, that allows him the expertise of coaching in proper movement to avoid injury- very important. And while I could go on about the rest of the coaches- Bea, Chris, Steve; it is easier to read about them here: http://www.clocktower-crossfit.com/about Everyone is made to feel welcome and everyone is encouraged to push to their ability- a little beyond. I have met some great people here and look forward to making my own improvements. I would completely recommend Clocktower Crossfit to anyone- the newbie and the experienced.

Great gym! I don't work out often and I wouldn't call myself athletic (see my food reviews), but I…read morelove this place! I get a full body workout in 45 minutes in a group setting with the help of a trainer and tv monitors! It's clean, organized, judgement free and fun! So, I search Facebook events regularly for new *free* activities. One day, 2 summers ago, I came across an event for the F45 Grand Rapids grand opening. I'd never heard of this F45 thing before so I did some googling and found out that it's a workout concept originating from Australia and this would be the first franchise opening within a 3 hours' drive from us. My sisters and I decided to check it out and that Saturday morning, we got to the strip on 28th street where Michaels craft store used to be. The building was just being set up with mats, tv monitors and equipment - basic floor, walls and ceiling. We ran through several stations outdoors using free weights, ropes and yoga mats. Throughout the whole workout, trainers were encouraging us with, 'Nice work!', high fives and occasionally helping us modify lifts to target the correct muscle group. It was so much fun and by the end, I made up my mind to sign up for the 2 weeks of free, unlimited classes! Since that summer, I've been going to classes randomly with my friend Nicole who goes daily. They have a 20 class pass for $300. It's steep compared to gyms that offer memberships, but I have more of an incentive to actually attend these group workouts than I do if I were to hit the gym alone. Now that the place is established, they offer multiple classes from 530a-7p, 2 clean bathrooms, cubbies to stash your coats/keys, security cameras, and a welcoming environment. I've found that the Saturday morning classes fit my schedule the best and they offer 3 classes before 11am! It's such a great way to start my weekend and gives me time to recover before the work week begins again. I'm always sore after but it's a great feeling of accomplishment after I complete 2 rounds of 27 stations of heart pounding and sweat dripping workouts! Thanks Holly, Sam, Rusty and Ashley - you guys are awesome!
