Master Chung's Taekwondo (TKD)/Kickboxing school is, by far, among the best ones in the country…read more I had started TKD with Master Chung in 2006 and was there until 2009. I still continue practicing TKD in Maryland. Thus, I have had a chance to compare schools and masters and their training curriculum and practices across Michigan and Maryland. Master Chung ranks among the top for many reasons: 1) He is passionate about the art, and attempts to imbibe the same in the student. 2) He teaches, not only the techniques of TKD, but also the philosophy of TKD in a manner that allows one to grow personally in other walks of life as well. THIS IS A FEATURE THAT NOT MANY MASTERS MAY OFFER! 3) The TKD curriculum involves intense warm-ups, stretching exercises, forms, kicks/ punches/blocks, sparring, and self-defense techniques. What's special is that each of these elements differ each day, thereby making it all the more fun and exciting. That variety helps the student in an overall development of fitness and mindset. 4) Students are allowed to test only when they reach the required level for graduation, which may vary from individual to individual. Many schools make students test just for making $$ off the testing fees. That's not the case here. 5) Master Chung runs the show HIMSELF every day, every class. Many other schools rely on their black-belt instructors to run the class. 6) Master Chung displays the right balance of strictness and leniency during the class, which is fine tuned to each student, depending on his/her ability. This allows for an optimal learning curve for the student. 7) Master Chung focuses on the precision of each and every technique, such that one gets perfect at it. Other schools do not necessarily care about teaching the precise technique. 8) Lastly, the school here is BEST equipped. A huge square-footage area, clean and high-quality floor mats, plenty of punching bags and kick pads. In short, you wouldn't be making a mistake by joining Master's Chung's school. - Sridhar

Top-knotch martial arts instruction…read more Chung's Taekwondo is without question one of the best martial arts schools in Michigan. Master Chung teaches taekwondo at world-class level and expects the same kind of performance from every one of his students. I studied with Master Chung several years ago before I moved to California, and now I am a full-time taekwondo instructor, as well. Save yourself the trouble of shopping around--Chung's is the place to train!

I'm partial to this club because I've been a member of its predecessor, then this club, for 5…read moreyears! The owners of the club/school are friendly and not overly-competitive, offering training and classes in Kuk Sool Won (Korean stick fighting), Combat Hapkido, and Fitness Kickboxing (my discipline). Our fitness kickboxing program is 5:30 every evening Mon thru Thur, with additional 4:30 sessions on Mon and Wed. Classes are at 11:00 a.m. on Sat & Sun. The program follows Hapkido and Tae Kwando punches, kicks, and stretches, using standing bags. The only equipment needed are wrist wraps and boxing gloves - the club has some on hand to use until you decide to join and commit. There is no better way to end a hard day at work than to take it out on something that can't hit back!! ; ) Visitors are always welcome to just sit and watch, and the first class is always free (plus there are always promotional specials). Everyone is encouraged to participate at their own pace. We have fun, and have made many friends in this class. It's the best total-body workout I've found! For more information on these classes or membership promotions, call any time and Kim, Rick, Dave, or John will return your call.

Fitness Kickboxing is my gig...I'm hooked. Perfect way to build muscle and endurance, relieve…read morestress, keep toned, and have a great time doing it. And the relaxed atmosphere of KMA is quite comfortable. The "business" is really more like a co-op. Kuk Sool Won, Combat Hapkido, and Fitness Kickboxing all share the same facility, which is unusual from what I've heard: most schools are one discipline and one discipline only. If I were ever to get into serious martial arts training it would be here. The owner/instructors use a relaxed approach that still captures the discipline and focus needed for training. It's inexpensive, the facility is clean, and anyone wishing to try it out can do so for free for the first two weeks. I would encourage anyone to at least try Fitness Kickboxing for a couple of weeks. No experience is necessary...the instructors give tips on technique during the session. Theres' equipment available (boxing gloves, hand wraps, etc.) at the club that new participants are welcome to use for free. Give it a try.

The owner is very nice and when he saw me and new I was new, went out of the way to introduce himself. I had a tour with one of the trainers who works out of the gym, and he was both super knowledgeable and nice. I have been when pretty busy, and when I was the only one in the place and never had an issue getting in my full workout. If I was to give any criticism it would be that the locker rooms are small (well the mens one is) but they cannot really do anything to change that, and they are adequate.

I called the gym, but no one answered; typical. However to my surprise, I received a text from the owner saying he was in a meeting and couldn't get to the phone but wanted to know if I needed anything! I told him my situation and he gave me an entire weekend pass! The gym is a fob entry system, I went in the morning and had the whole place to myself, they had an awesome environment with lots of options. I enjoyed the place so much I decided to support it and buy one of their awesome fitness sweatshirts, which was only $20! I had a great experience and when I'm back in Lansing, I know where I will be.
