i'm really disappointed with this place. i have a small sized unit that i found with one of their promotions back in march, with military discount came out to around $90 a month. i asked when we first when in if it was a set price & they told me yes, as long as we purchased it before the promotion ended. when we went to go see the unit, it was all run down wood, the door to our unit had chips and did not seem very kept up with but again, for $90 a month i was really in no place to complain. i give one star because after about 3 months, i got a notice in the mail saying they were gonna raise my unit from about $90 to $160????? that's almost 200% higher & over just one increase. i called & they said that it's "normal" for places to raise the rent after a few months and "everyone" in SD does that. False. i've been stationed in SD for almost 6 years, renting from units down in chula vista and the other units company's i had NEVER raised their price. i called and asked why they were doubling it... i could maybe understand a $10-15 increase, but why DOUBLE?? then of course the guy said "well, how about we give you it for $130 a month... all of a sudden willing to drop their new asking price $30. Sounds a lot like Bait & Switch but i'm not trying to really go down that route. Go somewhere else people. this place is a scam and the quality of their unit isn't worth any asking price. read more

Friendly at first but ***I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS LOCATION!!!!!!!!*** THE BAIT AND SWITCH - I rented a parking spot for my travel trailer and they said I didn't qualify for 1 month free rent as advertised because I got a discount on my spot. Didn't seem discounted to me but a good chunk of money monthly. And now, just A FEW MONTHS LATER, THEY RAISED THE RENT. I discussed this with them and they said, "We'll submit a request to lower to rent, how's $30 off sound? But no guarantees". I said how will I know if approved? Response: you won't til your payment date. The rent did not adjust. I moved out a week early.. no compensation. NOT SECURE - Homeless folks wander onto the property whenever they want, they slip in when the vehicle drives through the gate. So they can jack with stuff and do whatever they want to the vehicles parked on the property which is not secure! NO SECURITY for property or vehicles outside the storage building itself. In this high transient area.. why wouldn't they have security onsite to prevent this? What are we paying for? TRASHED - My parking spot was under a tree which I initially thought was nice for the shade but it dumped a few inches of leaves, debris, sap all over the trailer. Shouldn't they be offering to decrease my rent due to the huge inconvenience to my paint job and the time it takes to clean and scrub? STAFF UNRESPONSIVE - When I expressed my concerns, it fell on deaf ears and complete apathy. They didn't do anything about any of my concerns/complaints, just looked at me blankly. But there was a woman there that was helpful enough to provide proof that I provided verbal NOTICE TO VACATE in time so I didn't have to pay another month of high rent. I'm pulling out early and GETTING THE HECK OUT!!! Why am I paying more to have my trailer get dumped on with tree trash and homeless roaming around without security and unresponsive staff? I"M NOT! I MOVED OUT A WEEK EARLY ***I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS LOCATION!!!!!!!!*** MANAGEMENT: If we didn't care about our stuff, we wouldn't pay to store it. Staff is very friend, the facility is conveniently located near my home, accessibility hours are great, very secure. This is why I decided to continue my service when I needed to downsize my unit. This was a epic experience! Honestly finding the unit was so easy. From the comfort of my phone. I had the unit for 2 years and I felt safe going to the unit. I felt my stuff was well protected. Moving out was just as easy! I never had any issues and when things did change for example new lock system I had loft of early communications letting me know exactly what to expect. Needing a storage unit is stressful but finding a place that you know is taking good care of you and your stuff? Priceless! I would give it 5 stars but someone set off the sprinkler system and instead of calling everyone effected right away we didn't get a call for almost 2 weeks after... so half our stuff had black mold. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. My husband picked this place because Bob gave him a good deal. When I went to check it my first gut reaction was "Ruuuuuuuun!!!" The homeless and tweekers everywhere was the first red flag, then we saw a tweeker living out of a unit and I was really like "RUNNNNN!!" My husband reassured me that being on the second floor was more secure because a code is required to get in the elevator. I regretfully agreed. Ahh surprise, surprise today we find out that everything of value has been stolen out of the unit!! $10k+ worth of items GONE and the unit tossed. We haven't even had it 1 month. read more

Off to an interesting start. I've been a customer for two days and here at the end of the month. I spent two days moving into my unit and my last run came a bit late, I made it perhaps 5 minutes before the gate closed and took a few minutes to finish all my unloading and left the property within 10 or 15 min out the exit gate. Woke up to an aggressive manager named Cindy reprimanding me for the late entry and threatening to break the contract and wouldn't settle down even after conveying it was a one time emergency. Considering this isn't the cheapest or even most upscale storage unit for the rate I'm paying has me very tempted to take my business elsewhere. Not an impressive start for my stay at Extra Space Storage. read more

Absolutely the worst storage experience of my life. I've used self storage for around 45 years and this was the worst. From narrow hallways to broken elevators, this was a bad experience. I complained many times to the staff but all the problems were out of their hands. I was never offered anything as far as compensation. But I think the biggest problem was the carts. There were not enough and you have to search long and far for one. There were people practically living out of some of the units. read more

Worst storage facility I have ever been to. Was clearly treated differently because we walked up with a wagon of stuff that was going into the storage. Apparently traveling without a vehicle MUST mean that you are homeless, and that automatically makes you a second class citizen who doesn't deserve any respect or common human decency. Despite paying the storage in full and in cash. and I was still told that I couldn't help my boyfriend to bring our belongings in the storage because I didn't have an i.d. even though I wasn't the one trying to rent the storage. And was then told there is a 30 minute time limit Never in my life have I heard of a storage facility who needs or requires i.d's from people who help you move your stuff OR told that you have 30 minutes to either move everything in, or out, and if you need to get anything, it's gotta happen in 30 minutes or less. I was told I can't even be on the grounds. Absolutely absurd. If I hadn't already paid for the month before I was told of these ridiculous "company rules" that "EvERy TEnaNt hAs To aBidE By" I would have gone somewhere else, like I plan to do as soon as this month is finished. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. Not personable, or friendly by any means. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. We were treated like complete garbage and found it quite funny that the people ahead of us were not told anything like the rules we received. They even went as far as to say we couldn't be "loitering" in the parking lot, (AFTER ALREADY PAYING) because I need to grab a few things, since I wasn't allowed in the gates.... Unbelievable. So yeah 0 stars for this place.... ...Oh and from what I was told, it's hot as hell in there, making it super uncomfortable to move anything in or out anyhow. read more

This place had exceptional customer service. Any worry I had, they had it covered! The storage units are storage units with some being much fancier if you pay for it. The design of the location enables easy entry AND exit. They have complimentary carts to use and I was never without at least one. The staff is pleasant and informed and it is in a great secluded location where you won't feel panicked going in and out but also right off the 8 freeway enabling easy access.The way in which it is built allows air flow as it utilizes the natural ocean breeze. Definitely would recommend! I am a 4th year college student and this is the cleanest, most organized storage place I've seen. (Still a storage unit so I wouldn't eat off the floors!) *Check out their deals before renting. read more

What has happened to this place??? I stored there for about 8 months last year and never had a problem. I especially liked the customer service I received from one individual there who I do not see anymore. Now my bf just moved here from NY and we needed storage space again. It has been a nightmare! They are remodeling the offices but that shouldn't make a difference in what goes on there. One of the three elevators is not working, who knows when that will be fixed. Seems that kind of thing should get fixed immediately. That has been a source of even more walking for my 63 yr old bf and he's in pretty damn good shape! Carts are scarce. Then we tried to leave the place and no matter how many times we did our code correctly, the gate would not open for us. I had to keep honking my horn so someone would come out of the office and help us, but that wasn't easy. As we were waiting, another customer came of the office and said the people in there were assholes and he wasn't able to get the gate to open either. SO frustrating. And as others have said, they raised the rate on me when I was there before after only a few months. If they do it this time, I will REFUSE to pay and threaten legal action. We now wish we had gone somewhere else, and we certainly won't be recommending it to anyone. read more

WORST SERVICE EVER!!! I WILL NEVER GO BACK AND WILL NOT RECOMMEND!!! My husband and i got a storage unit to move in our belonging while he deployed (he is in the navy) for about 7 months. Both of our names were in the paperwork and my husband signed a paper stating that if he were to miss a payment our unit WILL NOT be eligible for auction because he is military personnel and is deployed. We read thoroughly before signing. (military does that to you) Towards the final two months my husband was unable to pay. and i was not aware of that. when i moved back to SD and attempted to start moving some of our belongings to our new apt and my combination wouldn't open the gate. I called every number listed and no one would answer, not even the manager on site. I finally went back the following day when someone was there and they said that my unit was getting processed for auction for non payment for two months. i told him that they cannot do that because my husband signed the paperwork and they said it isnt valid because he wasn't the main account holder..WTF HIS NAME WAS ON THERE!!!! the manager was extremely rude and unprofessional and told me that if i paid the total amount that same day they will allow me in, I had just moved back to SD from Vegas and it was in the beginning of the month. if you are military you know that the first payday pretty much all goes to rent. adn the rest was used for the moving truck.and rent deposits so i was short on cash and only had $50 for food to last 2 weeks. I said i would be able to pay the full amount until the 15 .They said too bad. After complaining a few hours the manager finally agreed that if i pay $50 i can take out my stuff but it had to be done by 4pm (it was 2pm by then) with my husband still deployed had i had to rush and empty out my belongings and loan some money for food. read more

The elevators for this facility are large, however the design of the building is terrible. Trying to get a couch through the hallways is impossible. There's no room. It's ridiculous. I feel like the facility is secure, it's gated and has plenty of cameras every where. Everything is pretty clean as well. Auto pay online is convenient but they have raised my monthly rate three times in less than a year. I feel like it's wrong to tell you your rate is one number, and then gradually raise it every couple of months. I definitely won't be doing extra space storage in the future. read more

I think I may have had the pleasure of dealing with the "condescending" lady that Starlight refers to in her review, hence the one star. I agree with the ease of enrolling and can affirm the fact that most all of the vendors from the swap meet store their merchandise here, so the place is often bustling. I cannot give them more than a star for the simple fact I received a scary phone call that they were threatening to put all of my belongings into auction. Thank god they contacted me when they did because in a few weeks I would have moved and been difficult to nearly impossible to contact. The gent I set the account up with lead me to believe I was enrolled in autopay; which is only logical, considering I told the guy I was moving and wanted to use the CC I was giving him as my autodebit payment. Anyhow, through the confusion, some paperwork supposedly isn't filled out and I get this SUPER rude lady calling me, typical collections style, I just want to pay her and get the autopay set up to avoid further worry, but she just cuts me off and talks down to me whenever I try to explain the situation. She treats me like it's my fault, when my understanding was that I had already been enrolled in autopay, all of my credit card info was taken and written out by the man who first registered me. Weird and very frustrating. My favorite quote of hers when I asked about how much the price of storage was going to increase to after a year (all storage units are subject to price hikes after a year): "How am I supposed to know that?" Um, aren't you an employee? It isn't enough to tell them your situation, that you are moving abroad and will not be mailing in payments and want autopay. Make sure to check and DOUBLE CHECK with them that your autopay is properly processed, otherwise, they will auction off your belongings and you'll have the added discomfort of dealing with Mariam the condescending or whatever her name was. Nightmare! Plus on top of all that, the place is kinda dingy and smells like piss. read more

My experience with ESS: 1. I went to their website. 2. I indicated I wanted a unit near my zip code. 3. They gave me a comprehensive list of options which I narrowed down to the size and location I desired. 4. I indicated I wanted to reserve it now, and set my move-in date nearly 3 weeks out from now. 5. I paid $20 to reserve it and get the 1st month rent free. 6. I hit submit, and was offered a map and my confirmation data. 7. My cell IMMEDIATELY rang with ESS confirming they got my reservation, the move-in date, and did I need directions or have any questions? 8. I nearly peed myself from the prompt, easy and friendly service. 9. I am stoked. And will update this later with the rest of the move-in/out experience. UPDATE: The move-in process was pretty smooth, the customer service at the desk is 90% awesome. Meaning, the woman who helped me was super friendly. The woman I heard helping other people - not so much. If I were to use a word to describe her... I'd use condescending. Ick. Otherwise, this is a VERY large facility with LOTS of units. I was a bit daunted at first because my small unit was a long way down some halls, up an elevator, etc etc. BUT, that was quickly remedied by the fact that ESS has lovely moving carts for you to borrow so you don't have to carry an armload of boxes .25 miles to your unit. Turned a 20 box storage move into 3 quick trips. The only thing that will suck to move through all those hallways is the couches, but that's why I have friends who are easily bribed with alcohol. Other information you should know: Every freaking stand at the flea market across the street (Saturday Flea Market at the Sports Arena) keeps their goods in this storage facility. That means mid-day/evening Saturday is pretty busy. I'd recommend going at a time to avoid that mess. The units are "accessible" until 10pm at night, and that is AWESOME. Office hours are regular during the week and Saturdays, but closed on Sunday. Set up your reservation online to get a free month of rent. You can pay your bill online - that's a big deal for me as I have an allergy to putting a stamp on something and getting it in the mail. Still keeping it at 5 stars due to the ease of everything and the thus far, quite positive experience. read more

Total Inside Scam. Burglarize Units. Homeless, mentally ill and tweekers living inside. We made the mistake of using this place, took a trip and returned to have all our belongings (EVERY BOX) rifled through and anything of value stolen. The forced insurance (American Claims Management, Inc.) is also a scam and didn't pay out a dime for over 20k worth of theft. They both know the ins and outs of how to rob you and take the door of the hinges so there is no sign of forced entry. I asked for any footage of unit burglary they said they would help but never did. They smile, act slick and helpful then rob you blind. The police were useless and said it happens at this place all the time. Just NO. read more

As my wife and I were moving, we needed a storage unit. This Extra Space Storage facility seemed to be in a convenient location, so we checked it out. The employees Mike and Jerry couldn't have been more helpful. It was our first time renting a storage unit, and Mike immediately made us feel at home. We got plenty of space for the money. The rooms were full height, clean, etc. They were updating the hallway lighting during our rental period, so things were plenty bright. That provided plenty of light for inside the unit (which doesn't have an internal light). The security system for getting in and out seemed to work fine and was easy to use. Good storage! Good value! Friendly staff! We're more than happy to recommend this storage facility. read more

This place has great customer service! They do their best to make you feel safe and cared for. When you are leaving your life's possessions with strangers you want to know you are not going to come back to an empty unit. Very competitive prices, tons of size options and close to freeways. Only drawback is that the building is huge and there are only 2 elevators. Not a problem to get one to use but a little tough to walk the halls back and forth. I guess this comes with any storage place though... All in all I would definitely recommend Extra Space Storage to anyone asking. read more
