I wish I could give negative stars!! Horrible, find another company. I reserved a unit at 41 Norwood st in Boston, MA. It was climate controlled and on the 5th floor. 1. When I moved out there was rat shit everywhere and I did not have food in my unit. It was all over the couches and furniture I stored there. Gross!! 2. I specifically asked the person at the counter when I moved out to email me the statements for the payments while I was loading up a moving truck because I needed them. Needless to say he didn't do it. When I got to NY, I didn't see it and I could not log into my account anymore because they closed it with the move out. When I call customer service, they can see that I was charged but they cannot send it, they said I need to go to the local branch and they perhaps can print them out, but they weren't sure they can email them. In this day and age you're telling me this company cannot email you a statement receipt? 3. I cancelled my unit and scheduled my move out date 5 days before the charge. When I got the charge it was for the full amount. When I moved out and asked why it wasn't pro-rated the person said I had to call in and that you can't do it online. I called customer service and they said they sent a text saying to call and that people accidentally submit a move out intent online all the time. The text message said to call "if your plans change". So the online checkout means absolutely nothing and you have to call if you want to be charged only for the time you actually used the unit. What's worse, they cannot issue a partial refund. What kind of company is unable to do that!? What a scam!! This is the first time I have ever written a review for anything!! I felt compelled to save someone else from this horrible company. RUN!! Use a different storage company. read more

I rented a unit form these guys at $84/month. This was an introductory rate, and totally understandable. However, they raised my rates to $182 in 8 months! I know that our leases are month to month and they do market assessments and go up. However, I have never heard of it increasing more than 100% in less than a year. This in unethical and should be illegal. There is no way to explain that the market says it should cost 100% more then when you moved in. These crooks are taking advantage and you should not trust them! I don't know of another storage place in the country that would do this! When I spoke to the General Manager, he said there was nothing he could do as corporate sets the rates. I asked to speak to someone in corporate , and that is not possible. If you call their 1-800 number it just gets kicked back to him. He called it an "endless loop." I will be reporting them to the BBB as well as notifying the news channels. read more

There are homeless people and addicts living in some of the units. I reported this to management and their response "tell me which units and I'll investigate". Not my job to police this facility. I approached one of the guys that I've seen there often and his response was "the manager knows I'm here and I pay extra."To whom? The place is not climate controlled. There is on onsite live in resident manager as promised on the website. In the seven months I've rented, only one of the loading bays was operative. The elevator inspections lapsed. It appears there aren't enough fire extinguishers. The carpeted hallway floors (why carpet?) are usually dirty. One of my units was entered (from the top) and was rifled through. When I told the manager about this, his response: I don't want you to be unhappy. Maybe you should go somewhere else". At my additional expense, I will have to. But I will sue and expose this dump to City of Boston inspectional services, BPD and the media. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. IF YOU CURRENT RENT, GET OUT NOW! read more

BUYER BEWARE. I rented a storage unit from this ESS for over three years and what started out as a good relationship ended terribly. Even though the building is only five years old they had leak issues last winter that impacted my unit. I got the call when I was on a business trip in Florida: snow melting on the roof had somehow made its way down to my unit (even though my unit wasn't on the top floor) and there was damage. I didn't know the extent of the damage until I arrived back to the unit two days later to find that several of my possessions, including artwork and family heirlooms, were waterlogged. Extra Space storage did nothing for me. I begged and pleaded that they compensate me in some way, whether crediting me some months of rent or replacing items, but ultimately they told me they weren't liable due to the contract I had signed and I wouldn't get even a penny compensation. Furthermore they were down right uncompassionate and rude about the whole ordeal, with the Regional Director never even bothering to return my calls. I feel like I could have had a case in court since it could be deemed negligence that they didn't maintain their very new building sufficiently enough not to cause leaks, but after this whole ordeal I couldn't bring myself to dwell on it any further. In the end I had to accept that some of the things I had paid years upon years to store (both at ESS and at previous storage units) were gone. As soon as my lease was up I got my stuff out of ESS and never looked back. There are many other storage companies out there that will treat you compassionately when disaster strikes, ESS is not one of them. Just don't do it. read more

For a storage facility in the city I felt their rates were reasonable. Onsite is clean and the store manager Erica is very attentive and helpful. The location is good and convenient to the highway. They offer a complimentary van for customers too, which is a nice perk. read more

Upon 1st getting my storage here 2 months ago, it appeared that this location would be a nice location. However, as days passed I notice how nasty and under maintenanced this location was. I was disgusted when I 1st noticed it and new I should have addressed it early on.However, due to my busy schedule and the fact that the office doesn't open until 9 am but the doors are accessible at 6am which is normally the time I arrived, I hardly had time to meet with anyone. The prices are extremely low and so is the morale. The bathrooms are always filthy and unsanitary. When you arrive, the doors are always wide open, accessible to any Tom, Dick and Harry passing by even when the front office is closed with the alarms going off. This place is disgusting. My items were stolen from my storage as it was "locked open" meaning that the latch was not properly closed but the lock was on and closed. I was told by the location manager that basically it was my fault as if it's justifiable for someone to enter into your private things because it was mistakenly open. Not lifted and opened . But closed with the appearance of being locked .This way of entry means that who ever stole my items was perhaps searching for other units to enter into as well. They had to go up to the unit and tamper with it to notice that it was. Obviously this person is not new at what they do. Location failed to produce camera footage and claims Manager is on "vacation". This location is unsafe and I fill like I have to look over my shoulder every time I enter in. After 1mnth of the door being broken, the location manager is still claiming the repairs are on the way. If a person steals who knows what other types of crimes they may commit when caught. I do not recommend not one bit. Disgusting. read more

We sold the house and needed to vacate quickly. We needed a short-term fix. I called Extra Storage because they had the best monthly rate for a 10x10 unit. I was surprised to find that we would get the first month free, without any contract for a specific period. Not only that, but we also got free use of a cargo van. Erica, the manager, was a great help. She clearly understood the sizes of the units and what they would hold. She would be a great resource for anyone who hasn't done this before. I highly recommend this location. Clean and bright, with good safety and security measures. You can drive into a huge bay and unload (or load) in a comfortable and dry atmosphere. The worst storage experience I've had as far as billing. Hidden fees, short notices, excessive fees. Inability to make partial payments that result in fees because you can't put anything towards a bill without paying it in full... The reason I even had to put my possessions into storage was traumatic enough, but struggling to pay to keep my tangible life from being put on auction at every turn truly made this a trying experience. The manager(s) was helpful at times but I remember having to endure log phone conversations just to breakdown specifics of "36th" days and rent adjustments according to "the contract". I'm so done with them and would not recommend for anyone doing longterm rentals because they are not as transparent. Now let me go pay my $300 bill for my late $85 rental (that was originally $67 I believe, yet kept rising--math doesn't even add up properly. Tsk) so I can be done with Extra Scam Storage. read more
