Perfectly Matched woodwork to our 1880's victorian!
    Scott M.

Expert Design Builders is a great company. Zach is always looking out for the well being of the customer, and makes sure to complete what he says when he says and within budget. Anyone that knows construction know there is going to be unseen delays. Zach is very good about working around these and staying in communication with you about the solution. Using EDB was one of the best decisions when it came to using a contractor in the bay area. Zach is very detailed and takes the time to use quality products. There is a big difference of when a job is just finished with any materials available, and when Zach and EDB use top quality products. I have an 1880's victorian that has original detail wood trim and flooring. We expanded a half bathroom into a full and added stairs into the basement. The job was large and completed on time and perfectly within our budget! Zach matched the finish work so well that people cannot tell where the new additions are. The proof is in the finished product! Having people in awe of the finished product is a perfect sign we will use EDB for all future projects.

My husband and I are so happy to have found Zach Dawn, a contractor who actually provides the "magic three" -- great quality, reasonable cost, AND speedy work. A rare find! We recently moved to Berkeley after purchasing a new (built in 2013) home and wanted to have some floating shelves installed in the dining room and some storage shelves in the garage. After meeting with one contractor who gave us an outrageous $$$ estimate (who also said that we would need to tear down the entire drywall and sheetrock), and then another who said that our proposed project was "too difficult," we got lucky when a neighbor on NextDoor.com recommended Zach at Expert Design Builders. Throughout the whole process, Zach was courteous, friendly, and easy to communicate with. We were immediately impressed by his knowledge and confidence. He called me back the same day, then came out that weekend to do an estimate, and by the next week he was starting work on our house. He listened to what we wanted and made some really good suggestions. He even provided a computer-generated image of what our garage shelves would look like so we could make any changes if we wanted to. As an added bonus, he and his team always left a neat and tidy work space after each visit. We ended up adding a few extra projects (some smaller floating shelves in the baby's room, and a fix for our busted front and back gates), and he adjusted our estimate and got the work done quickly without any trouble. Might I add that we got all this work done for LESS than the estimate the first contractor gave us for just the floating shelves. And, unlike some contractors, he didn't destroy our house in the process! If you are looking for someone to do high-quality, professional work at a reasonable price, Zach is your man. We highly recommend him and would definitely work with him again for future projects.

    After!

Zach and his crew at Expert Design Builders did an incredible job on our house. Our project started as a deck project. (Emphasis there on the word 'started' ;) We wanted to strip our cantilevered decks down to the joists to check for rot, replace/shore up any joists showing rot, then rebuild the decks with a wood/style more to our liking. But Zach was so timely and detailed in his contract for the decks that we decided - what the heck! - let's ask for a quote for the fence out front. Then we asked about the patio stairs. And the next thing you know, Expert Design Builders is redoing our decks, fencing, stairs, and painting the entire exterior of our house because of how comfortable and confident we felt in Zach and his team. Here are some things that stood out to us during the project: 1) Quality: Zach wants his work to look great. Twice, his crew turned away a wood delivery because the product wasn't up to their standard. They had me come out and look at the wood and showed me why they were sending it back. As a result, our fences and decks look phenomenal. We know his profit on the project took a hit because of those decisions and are grateful he cared enough to do so. 2) Communication: We interviewed multiple companies before going with Zach and while other contractors followed up their trips out here for an estimate with "It'll cost about this much" emails, with no details as to why/what will 'cost this much', Zach continually broke things down so that we could understand. If a part of the project was going to take longer than initially expected, he explained why. If we wanted to change a detail, but doing so would cost more, he gave us options to choose from. And if something was going to be cheaper for us to buy ourselves and then have his crew install, he told us where to get it. Were there times when something didn't turn out as we'd hoped and we had to have a difficult conversation about fixing it? Of course. That's a part of any remodel! But Zach was always willing to talk things out and brainstorm solutions, which we really appreciated, because in the end it led to us getting exactly what we wanted. 3) Respect: Zach and his crew were at our house for almost three months and treated us, our house, and our neighbors extremely well for the entirety of the project. They cleaned up at the end of every day. They paused sanding/drilling when I needed it quiet for a work call. They put down Ram Board where they were walking inside of our house, so as not to damage our floors. We even got comments from our neighbors about how friendly the crew was and how if they ever needed a car moved, the guys were happy to oblige. Needless to say, if you're looking for a contractor in the San Francisco/Oakland area, I highly recommend Zach and Expert Design Builders. I visited a few of their work sites before deciding to go with them and the houses looked just as great as our house does now. If/when we need more work done (which hopefully won't be for a long while!) we'd hire him again in a heartbeat.

I'm amazed at the number of 5 star reviews here, which ultimately led me to using Expert Design Builders. Quick version: Zach left the job without finishing all of the work, but with all of it paid for. Lots of rework, and lack of accountability on his end. ----- I had 3 contractors come and give me bids for work on my mother's house. This included a downstairs kitchen, an upstairs kitchen, a bathroom, repainting the upstairs interior, repainting the entire exterior of the home, installing a heater, waterproofing the entry stairs from leaks, re-routing a gutter, and some canned lights in the downstairs kitchen. Of the 3 contractors, Zach was my 2nd choice since my first choice was not available during the timeline I needed. Zach struck me as a very calm, grounded and professional individual. He communicated well at first, and made a very concerted effort to understand what we wanted, and what was a maybe - some items that may take us out of our budget. Overall, the pricing was fair. He started work on our front stairs, using an epoxy-based deep penetrating wood sealer in order to mitigate the water damage on the wood under the stair structure, and then using a stair tread adhesive to waterproof the stairs over the entire surface, including the edges. The sealant was a 3-step process. However, after the 3 coats, rain came, and it leaked again. Zach went ahead and poured more sealant. Weeks later, it leaked yet again, and Zach informed me that he would not warranty the work on the stairs unless he used sealant to cover the glass blocks that were under each step; only charming element of these stairs. When I went to the house to examine the stairs, I noticed that the sealant didn't cover the bottom side of each step, so the water was just curling around the edge of each stair and penetrating where there was no sealant. He ended up correcting it after I suggested a solution for him, so no covering the glass blocks. But I don't think he will stand by his labor warranty since he no longer answers my calls. He installed a heater upstairs. He had problems with his plumber not coming back to finish his work, so when he finally got it installed, the electrical outlet was misaligned with the heater. Oops. I didn't give him a hard time for it, but it's worth noting. The scary part is that he left the gas line, on the exterior of the house, completely unstrapped to the house. That's about 40 feet of gas conduit unstrapped, clanging against the side of the house in high windows, god forbid there be a seismic event. 4 weeks after the install, his helper (Gilbert was great, btw) came over and ended up adding a couple of conduit straps. Now, it was definitely not done to code. The gas line stub coming out of the house goes too far, so he couldn't strap it to the top side of the house unless he strapped it to strut, like any reasonable contractor would do. So the gas line isn't strapped where the conduit exits the house, and not for another 15 feet. The kicker was the interior painting in the upstairs kitchen. In all fairness to Zach, I don't think that these were the guys that Zach typically uses. But, Zach being the GC, he really wasn't on top of managing these guys, and it led to rework. When they painted the kitchen cabinets the first time, the paint got tacky and didn't adhere correctly. Zach begrudgingly got a guy to strip the paint and repaint, but did a crappy single coat. He ended up refunding us $200 so my brother would paint it himself (although he originally offered us $1000 to do the work, he had to pay the guy for doing shit work). Also, they forgot to primer a significant portion of the upstairs kitchen, so that peeled off real quick. They also left paint on the cabinet hinges, cause the painters did not know how to prep correctly. Yelp won't even allow the number of characters I need to describe all of the grievances. ----- To be fair, Zach did a lot of things right. And some things I know he really went above and beyond on. If he finished everything, even weeks beyond the original construction timeline, I am understanding and would have given him 4 stars, despite the rework, stress and time it took on our end. But because he: 1) Basically didn't check his own work, needed me to leave punchlists for him that he wouldn't finish 2) Still hasn't provided receipts for the appliances he purchased 3) Charged us a late fee even though he completed the work late 4) Kept making himself out to be the victim, talking about "I'm losing money already on this job" when it was his own undoing, 5) Decided to stop answering phone calls and never finished the work, and 6) Had a conversation about "trust" with me right before he took the rest of his pay, then didn't finish the long punchlist I trusted him to finish, I can only give him 2 stars. And I feel that I am generous with that. His contractor labor warranty now means nothing. So I will be reporting him to the BBB and California State License Board.

Overall the experience was very good; Elijah and Bryan were super friendly and responsive. Eli was very patient and accommodating as we discussed several different potential change orders, from new windows to painting, to other misc. things that popped up. Bryan Luna was especially a pleasure to work with. His attention to detail and proactivity to solve any little thing I mentioned was definitely the highlight of working with Prime. Their contracted electrician, Hector, was great as well. I also think they did a great job building out a cabinet to fit our freezer next to the matching fridge. Their master carpenter managed to salvage our existing wood to make it match perfectly. Definitely better than what I'd expect from even a carpentry specialty contractor. I will mention that it wasn't without some snags. Prime deals in volume so they're very busy. I think because I had delays in sourcing a freezer I ended up not getting a dedicated project manager for some time. We had timeline issues made worse with holidays. This caused cascading delays which inevitably pushed back my move in date a few weeks. When I finally did get a new project manager, they ghosted me (later on I found out they had a family emergency). Eli had to step in again to help. Another thing is that their pricing is quite opaque. The estimate will break down prices by milestones, but they repeated told me that it's not a valuation of the milestone itself. This made it nigh impossible to understand if I wanted to contract out specific pieces of the project (e.g. flooring). Design was OK. I felt that the designer was very busy. Sometimes very responsive (5min replies), sometimes not responsive at all (no reply). I wish I had a better, more thorough back-and-forth session about the intricacies of the design. But we made do. Ultimately, the designer made a render and helped point us to some vendors, but from there we had to make our own selection alone (cabinets, handles, pendant lights, faucets, etc.). I did appreciate her presence when we picked out countertops, though. All in all, I think this was a 4.5 star job, but I'm rounding to 5 because of Eli and Bryan :)

Overall, the project went well, and we're happy with the final results. Bryan, our foreman, was a strong asset to the project. Even though he was managing multiple jobs at the same time, his responsiveness and willingness to go out of his way to address our concerns made a big difference. Because we were home throughout the process, we were able to catch issues early and communicate them directly to Bryan, who consistently followed through to resolve them. What Went Well: * The tile and flooring subcontractors were excellent - their craftsmanship and attention to detail truly stood out. * Bryan, our foreman, was responsive to texts and phone calls, listened to our concerns, and made sure they were addressed. He even designed a bi-fold closet door for us, and helped pick up all the material to build it. * Bryan also took the initiative to handle several unfinished items himself, which we really appreciated. * The post-build cleaners were top-notch and left the space in pristine condition. * Throughout the project, everyone we interacted with was professional, courteous, and conscientious. There were no conflicts or issues, which made the experience comfortable for us. Areas for Improvement: * The timeline was a pain point. While we were originally told the project would take 6-8 weeks, it ended up stretching to 12 weeks. * The design process fell short of expectations. Because Prime's in-house designers weren't available, our design work was outsourced. We only received a full design package for the master bathroom. As a result, we ended up creating our own renderings for the other rooms to help communicate our vision to the team. That said, we were very happy with the design and material selections for the master bathroom they did complete. We just wish the same level of attention and design support had been provided for the rest of the project. * At times, resource availability was limited, likely due to workers being assigned to multiple jobs. This led to workflow inefficiencies and delays. Toward the end of our renovation, our foreman Bryan had to personally step in to complete several tasks, such as installing faucets, shelving, and baseboards. He managed to get it done in between site visits and meetings, which we appreciated, but it also highlighted a lack of available crew to close out the project. Despite these few challenges, the quality of the work met our expectations. We appreciated the team's effort and the final outcome.

Owning an older home comes with inevitable surprises, so we wanted a team who could problem-solve creatively. That's where Liran shined. We brought some ideas to the table, and he offered alternative solutions that made far more sense for how we live--solutions we loved. Designers were brought in to prepare plans and permits, and the work began. Our project manager, Adi, was one of the kindest, most attentive people I've ever worked with. He stayed in constant contact, visited the site frequently, and ensured every detail met extremely high standards. It became a running joke between us about changing their slogan to "quality you can afford"--he humored me, and it perfectly captures the team's approach. The craftsmanship from Flavio, the lead contractor, was exceptional. We didn't pick the easiest designs, but the finished primary bathroom shower tile is genuinely a work of art--everyone who sees it comments on it. We also can't forget "Muscle Memo", who handled all the heavy lifting--climbing through dusty attics, crawling under grimy crawl spaces, and tackling the toughest physical work. I was definitely persuaded by these reviews - and now will question every business that has 5 star reviews. Do your homework and don't be fooled. Project took much longer than what it should have because they were disorganized and would forget certain things (the foreman would even admit that the PM should have told me certain things!) that I would have imagined a contractor had down pat in terms of sequencing. They use some subcontractors and you are at the mercy of their schedules. They just are not organized (you will do a lot of the reminding, checking in, following up, and certain things still may not happen). They failed inspections meaning more cost (it is their job to pass these! It says this in any contract!) If it seemed as though I was questioning something, the PM got defensive and sometimes unprofessional, gaslighting me in a very aggressive manner. I saved the communication, in fact. The people I worked with directly were young and it showed in the almost-too-casual style of communication and lack of professionalism. I surrendered towards the end and just wanted the project done and everyone gone. I feel completely foolish that I went with the significantly higher estimate thinking it would offer a smooth, superior experience. The actual people who did the work worked hard though and did nice work - hence the two stars. But at the end of the day, it's actually hard to enjoy the work as I am reminded by the months of bad experiences - up to the very end. You can find more experienced contractors out there for equal quality of workmanship and for a more competitive price. I am using a different contractor now for other work at the property - it's a 180 degree difference - they have a dedicated team for my project, meaning time to completion is more accurate and on time; they have a dedicated person to procure the finishes and fixtures, not myself; they are way more organized and even provided me a timeline of what to expect and communicate with me what time they are showing up and what progress was made that day (!!); they are bringing a truly expert eye with attention to detail that ELEVATES the space and are teaching me to ask things I didn't even know I should KNOW to ask; and most importantly, I feel truly comfortable asking questions without defensiveness and aggressive steamrolling in their answers. I received none of this level of care or expertise with MHR, and I want you to know that you should expect these things!!!

We also smoothed and painted all walls (level 4) and installed new hardwood floors throughout the entire house. We also did some additional work to remodel our fireplace. We spent several hours with each contractor. In the end, we picked Gilor because we really liked the project manager / founder Or Haim, who personally managed the project and had significantly more experience than the other project managers we met. Kitchen Remodel We had a grounds up kitchen remodel. Before any work began, they worked closely with our architect to fully understand the plans before execution -- which made a huge difference. When it came to the structural work, they made sure to do it right. In fact, when our kitchen designer came to take measurements, she commented that it was clear our contractor knew exactly what he was doing and had put in a proper structural support and framing. This was critical because we were installing posts and load-bearing beams that were recessed and flush. They were meticulous in laying out the electrical and re-routing all the plumbing -- gas lines, water lines, you name it. They also added additional blocking to accommodate our cabinet layouts and appliance dimensions before sheet-rocking the kitchen. They spoke with our kitchen designer to verify the height at which our wall cabinets would be hung and made sure blocking was there and that there would be no interference with electrical or plumbing. They were reading the dimensions of all the appliances before installing cabinets so that the spacing was exact. Our counter-depth fridge fit in flush with the cabinets. On top of that, they proactively adjusted the kitchen window height because they pre-planned and knew it would become an issue down the road -- our countertop would have ended up higher than the window sill if they hadn't caught it. That kind of foresight is rare and saved us from a costly fix later. We had many requirements and high-end finishes that required extra care and expertise to install: recessed outlets, a touch-enabled faucet, an in-line attic vent hood blower, a microwave drawer, a reverse osmosis water system, smart dimmers, and Fittes/Aria vents. You really need a contractor who knows his stuff for this kind of work, because the last thing you want is an incorrect installation that ends up costing you more money. Our countertops were beautiful, and they really elevated it by doing seamless 2-inch thick bullnose w/ miter edges and waterfalls for our kitchen island. We also used countertops as the kitchen backsplash from counter to ceiling, which really gave it a clean finished look. It's these smaller things you don't think about where they do an amazing job and really differentiates your kitchen vs. others that just go through the standard run-of-mill remodels. Bathroom Remodel Our bathroom was equally demanding. We went with ultra-large 48-inch tiles, miter edges with epoxy in the shampoo niche (rather than standard metal edges), a linear shower drain, a smart toilet, a floating vanity, and relocated plumbing lines. Everything was executed with precision and care, and the finished result looks stunning. Fireplace Remodel We had original brick fireplace that was fairly dated. So the team covered it in porcelain slabs (10ft slabs) for a modern look. It was mitered and therefore had no seams. They also replaced the aging gas line and installed a remote controlled gas fireplace that would fit into the existing space. Craftsmanship & Integrity Our remodel went on longer than we expected (7 months), but the quality was outstanding. Gilor Group did not disappoint. Their team on-site -- Jesus, Gilbert, Joel, and others -- all did an amazing job. They were easy to communicate with. They were also meticulous about cleaning up the job site every day. I also want to highlight Gilor's fabricator and hardwood floor installer, which truly made them a one-stop shop for us. We had many waterfalls in our kitchen, and the fabricator did an incredible job -- the seams were literally invisible. The hardwood floor installation was also beautifully done. We used ultra-wide floors (9.5 inches), which are more difficult to install (can't just use nails). I know the installation was done right because we used a laser to check the lines and the floors were straight across a 40 ft length. If you're looking for a contractor group that you can trust to work independently, deliver quality work, and have experienced project managers on-site daily -- look no further. We are so grateful for the entire Gilor team and couldn't be happier with how our home turned out. We would work with Gilor Group again in a heartbeat and highly recommend them. Our pictures speak for themselves.

The best! My mom hired Gilor Construction for a full ADU remodel at her house, and the experience…read moreexceeded expectations. They started in mid-December and finished by April 7, earlier than we anticipated, and that timeline included a major setback: an 80-foot redwood tree fell on the house during a Christmas storm. The roof was crushed, part of the structure separated, and we lost power for nearly a week. It was a stressful situation, and they handled it. They repaired all of the damage and still completed the full project within budget. That alone says a lot about how they run their jobs. Or Haim, the owner, is very communicative and genuinely cares about making sure everything meets expectations. That level of involvement made a difference. The fantastic onsite team was led by Jesus, who treated the project like it was his own home. He was thoughtful, detail-oriented, and clearly took pride in the work. We would absolutely hire Gilor again and are happy to serve as a reference.

His team is resourceful and they did not generate excessive work to add cost. For our kitchen / laundry facelift, we updated the flooring, backsplash, lighting, and reconfigured our laundry area. George's crew helped to side vent the dryer which the big box store was unable to do. George gave valuable input on our bathroom design to optimize the small space. He had suggestions for an in-wall toilet, a corner sink, window ledge niche, and talked us out of a doorless shower (thank you!). He knows small spaces very well and was able to place the fixtures in their best locations. George would give us a heads up on our requests that were going to cost more than ~1k. He had some subcontractors come in to help with varying degrees of quality and cleanliness. We are glad he managed the plumbing contractor who had to come back 3 times. His paint jobs varied quite a bit in consistency depending on who was painting. The best part of working with George was that we were expecting our first child, and he worked very hard to complete the project before her due date. To our surprise and delight he totally finished it before she arrived!

George was always quick to respond to any of my texts and emails no matter what the news may be. Our bathroom needed a complete teardown to expanding one wall out an additional foot. His crew was outstanding whether it be reconstruction of a wall, plumbing, electrical, painting or cleanliness. And to complement George's crew, he uses highly skilled third-party specialty contractors, such as, for our custom shower install. What amaze us most was how the work was all done as seamless as possible by being creative and resourceful at solving any potential obstacles or issues. We are looking to hiring George and his crew again on another project.
