They just don't care or have any respect for your art pieces. Their work is sloppy and their customer service is poor. About a year ago, we went to this place to have a limited edition print framed. The paper was delicate and its edges had these beautiful irregularities, so we decided to go for a float mount with spacers. When the job was done, they called us back to pick up the artwork. Once we arrived home we realized how bad was the framing work. The paper had wrinkles all around, like it was hanging from the spacers or something. We called to find a solution and they told us to bring the artwork back to the store. Since the mount float was not working, they recommend us to remove the spacers and just press the paper against the mat and use the glass to remove the wrinkles... After a couple weeks, we came back... And the situation was even worst. Now they have glued the print to the base mat but just on some random areas, so I could see the shapes of the glue blobs on the corners and on some other parts or the print..and on top of that the wrinkles were still there. At this point there is nothing else we can do, or, at least they were acting like that -- like "this is it". They can't unstick the paper because they would break it and the artwork it's mostly wasted. So we just picked the artwork and left the place quite disappointed. I'm writing this review one year later, because..on top of all these problems, now the corners of frame are also getting breaking apart...so the quality of the frame was poor too. Awesome... And of course, the place wasn't cheap (so no excuse there). I profoundly disappointed with this place (I went there because of the good reviews), I do not recommend it, and for sure, I won't be framing anything else there, ever again. read more

This place is a complete con job. They will over-charge you, "suggest" (euphemism for MAKE) you buy museum glass, the most expensive frame, etc...AND THEY FARM IT OUT!!! Very bad business. The owners are crooks. I went in there to get ONE picture's glass replaced because the frame fell...they wanted me to buy all new frames, glass, matting, etc at $130 and it would take ten days. absolute scammers. the staff who works in the store have no idea how to treat customers and most especially, artworks. they upsold me a $700 frame that started breaking while installed on a wall. i had to return it to get it fixed, only to get a damaged frame back (scratches on museum glass, chipped corners, big scratch on the back), which they did not take responsibility for. they might have damaged my art and are refusing to answer to it. they started name-calling and racially disrespecting me. then when i reached out to the owner, he ignored my issues regarding the art and refused to take accountability for his rude employees. i recommend going to skyframe. save your money, get a high quality frame and protect your art. read more

I had 3 items framed here after reading the glowing reviews. My experience was not positive at all. The initial consult was fairly good and we threw around a bunch of ideas as one of the pieces was a bit tricky. The salesperson threw out some suggestions after we communicated the effect and style we were looking for. There was a bit of sticker shock when he told us how much it would all come to but we were happy with what we thought we would be getting. When we went to pick up our art work, the bigger tricky piece was not done the way we had agreed. The gentlemen that had initially helped us was not there and the other person there wasn't interested in hearing that this was not what was agreed upon. He said what was on the hand written receipt was not the same as what we were expecting. Initially we could barely even get him to hear that what we were saying was different from what they had done and what we were expecting. He had no interest in trying to make things right. LESSON: Read the details of the work order before you walk out, apparently, even if you are not a framer and have no idea what each item means. We paid the full amount upfront but maybe we should have tried to only pay a portion instead so we could have had some bargaining power. After a bit of arguing, we would not take the piece as is and said we would come back and talk with the first person we worked with. When we came back, the original person we worked with was more accommodating and wanted to make sure we were satisfied. However, because the piece was very delicate we couldn't modify what was done very much. We agreed on the minor modification. He said he would call us when the work was done. That never happened. When we went back to see if our piece was done, we had a different person "help" us. This guy begrudgingly flipped through his book to look for our order. When we told him that he would have to go back further in his book because the order was older, he was not interested and told us there was no job. Finally, the other guy must have recognized us from the second time we went in and pointed the piece out to the guy. When we asked the guy to unwrap the piece so we could see the changes, he was not happy to do it. He didn't even want to take off the bubble wrap until we insisted so we could see the actual work done! After we ok'ed the work, he roughly wrapped up our piece to go. Needless to say, we will never take any more work to these guys. read more

I've been taking my own artwork & photographs, my clients' artwork - ranging from a Picasso to children's school work and have referred countless friends to Excel for over 15 years. They are amazing, knowledgeable, creative and willing to do super labor intensive, highly detailed special projects that no one else would take on and certainly not at this price point. Although I have a specific aesthetic I prefer when framing with a mat, I respect and defer to the staff's experience and insight when they challenge my direction. I trust them implicitly with the finest of art & photography and so do most major galleries in town. What prompted me to write a review is their level and commitment to customer service. On Saturday after 12noon, I brought in a 14"x 11" photograph and a selection of previously printed Instagrams that I decided needed to be framed last minute in anticipation of a photo shoot 48hrs later. I was thrilled when they said they could probably get the frames ready for p/u just before the shoot on Monday, but I was beyond amazed and appreciative when I received a call 5 hours later letting me know both custom made frames were ready for p/u. 5 hours later!!! I cannot over emphasize how caring and professional the employees and owner are. The fact that almost their entire staff has been working there as long as I've been patronizing is a testament to their craft. read more

I'm a snob for quality and Excel are the best framers out there. I am also a conscious consumer and did my research and visited other framers before selecting them. I go to to them when there's literally a FRAMER ON MY BLOCK because no one else felt trustworthy of handling my precious art, prints, and other things I have had framed. They are great with framing, matting, glass, and preservation. I have been to them multiple times and, although not cheap, you get what you pay for. The staff are lovely and they always keep their word. These guys are experts. I came in with four pieces and clueless, and they helped me select the right border, thickness, glass, and frame. A week later, I pick them up and they're beautiful. Well worth the price. The craftsmanship is extremely apparent in the heft of the wood, the seamless look of the frame, and the sturdiness of my pieces. The cherry on top? I feel kind of torn about this place, after getting something framed there recently. On the one hand, the framing job that they did was really great. I have absolutely no complaints. On the other hand, the employee that helped me was not very cool. First, he seemed really annoyed when I came into the store, and very slowly and reluctantly walked over to help me. But what was more egregious was that when I told him that I wanted a simple, modern, brushed metal frame, he ONLY showed me elaborate wooden frames. When I repeated my request, he picked out some wooden frames that were painted(!) to LOOK metallic. Being rather gullible, I figured maybe the shop didn't have any metallic frames. So I asked for a quote on the wooden-painted-to-look-metallic frame. The price was quite high, so I said that I'd think it over and started to walk away. It was only THEN that the employee stopped me and took out some metallic frames and told me that they were a lower price!!! W. T. F.! He also gave me a bigger frame/border than I'd asked for, which increased the cost. I didn't realize this until after I'd paid for it. Even though they did an excellent job, I don't like the antagonistic feeling of patronizing a business that will try to squeeze an extra dollar out of me through dishonest means, so I don't think I will return. read more

I was looking to frame a very oddly shaped print (almost 6' long!) and after being turned away by many other framing shops (or referred to $1000+ matting shops), Excel was there to save me. The employee spent about 30 minutes walking me through my options and frame styles. He was great. The piece turned out fantastic, and the cost was very reasonable. It was even ready about 4 days after I dropped it off! 4 days! Other framing places start at 4 weeks! I'd go back to Excel in a heartbeat. read more

I found this place in NY Magazine "Best of NY" from several years ago but they were on point. These guys are very knowledgeable about the frames and, more importantly, the right frame for your painting or photo. I took in a smaller peice several months ago and it was 2/3 of the price I was expecting, turned out better than I had thought as I went with their recommendation, and it was finished within a week! I went back last week and have been working with Joed (sp?) again on a large peice my mother painted. He recognized me and has been VERY helpful for this frame. Great framers at a great price. Elsewhere the cost just to replace glass, has been hundreds of dollars. And I had no problem with rude people working there. Just someone that was very professional. I went there on the advice of a client, have had quite a few NYC companies frame for me over the years, and would always only go there again.... If the only thing that you have been used to is buying some cheap frame from IKEA, as one person mentioned, then you don't understand the importance of getting real work framed properly. This is my first ever Yelp review, and I use Yelp for just about everything in NYC. Work and life catch up with you, and even someone with the best of intentions finds themselves up shit creek without a paddle sometimes. It was my boyfriend's birthday and I had bought 3 beautiful prints from Fab.com, with the idea to frame and hang them in our apartment for his birthday. Prints arrived, sat packaged up tidily in my office for a couple of weeks... so tidy that I completely forgot about them and woke up the morning of my boyfriends birthday kicking myself for not taking care of that weeks ago. So I got to work, and did a search on Yelp for framing stores nearby. I saw mixed reviews of the shop but the 'same day service' description of one post caught my eye. So I called the good people of Excel Art & Framing Studio that morning, explained what I needed (3 prints, 18x24, black frame - no bells and whistles), and said I needed them that same day. They said no problem, come on in and let's take care of it. I walked in, went to the man at the counter who I had spoken with not long before. He greeted me kindly and instantly began helping me with my order. He provided options in a decent price range, and good variety (as far as black frames go - who knew!?). We then decided on the frames, I paid the man (only something like $80/frame, which isn't bad in comparison of other services!), and came back at the end of my workday to retrieve my three, beautifully matted and framed prints - just in time to rush home and hang them in the apartment before my boyfriend had any indication that I nearly dropped the ball on his big 3-1. I would recommend anyone to Excel Art & Framing Store who isn't looking for some artsy-fartsy old dude to ramble on for hours about which black frame is superior to the other - and just wants to get their work framed in a fast, simple manner. But after picking it up, saw on the credit card statement that the store forged a second charge. Tried fighting it through the credit card company but as the store emailed two receipts, they accepted his story. The second signature was very different however. BEWARE, this owner is a thief and he charged and forged ~$1,800 for a simple canvas stretching. Am thinking he had the time to stretch it quickly as likely doesn't have many customers. Excel did a great job with a large print I had. They were able to deliver on time and had everything ready to go when I arrived. When I first came in the associate was helpful in showing me different options, but I didn't like that I had to point at frames for him to retrieve rather than grabbing them myself and browsing like you can at other places. The cost was pretty competitive though I will say when I mentioned I had the yelp deal after he showed me the final price he immediately started trying to upsell me on other options that he didn't present before which was fishy. They also don't have price lists or transparency which made me skeptical too. Overall I trust these guys and they deliver at a good price-- just be wary of the strange sale tactics. read more
