My goodness. Not even exaggerating but Ex Nihilo has the best smelling fragrances I have ever smelled. Ex Nihilo only has one or two other stores in the world, so in LA we are so fortunate to have one! There is the flagship in Paris, one in Dubai, and then here in LA! I hadn't heard about the brand before but the experience is unlike any other. The interior is beautiful, and to customize your own fragrance with the base of theirs is unique and actually one of a kind. The packaging and bottle are so lovely-- if you customize a fragrance you actually get to pick a different type of cap too! The whole process is really interactive and personal. The perfumes range from $325-$390 I believe. So it's a pretty penny but honestly I'll probably go and purchase one because it is just that amazing. Highly highly recommend!

Adding a secure cap to your new, personalized bottle of fragrance! It takes about two weeks to "settle" and age into the perfect scent.

Beautiful boutique store. Vanoosh walked us through all the fragrances. Highly recommend this place if you're a fragrance lover like me.

But they don't have all the different products for that scent anymore. Makes sense --- since they now also have a bunch of new ones that I am excited to try like the Bergamot Shiso and their Enoki Cedar. Parking on the street in front of the shop is difficult, but I was able to find one two blocks away. Got some steps in. Their Teakwood & Tobacco is one of my favorites and I got some refill. Glad they are open weekday. No crowd. Friendly staff. I love how they have a big airy space so the scents don't become overwhelming. I also love how they organized and displayed their products -- logical.

I was a little overwhelmed while trying to figure out what to buy, but I took my time to scope out all of the different scents. I'm pretty satisfied with the two candles that I ended up getting and I appreciate how carefully they were each paper-wrapped! Hopefully I'll be back again to get something for myself! It's such a cute little shop. Thanks again for the wonderful service!

I discovered General Wax earlier this year when I thought candle making would be a fun hobby. I brought a friend along to their North Hollywood location for what was advertised as an educational class. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like a class much at all but more like an activity. The 'instructor' claimed to sell her own candle creations, yet seemed surprisingly unknowledgeable. Our group was outspoken and asked lots of questions, but she was incredibly vague and nonchalant. When asked basic technical questions like how different fragrances react with specific waxes or how to choose the right wax for a project, she couldn't even provide clear answers. I really didn't learn much of anything at this paid class. (Fyi, I turned to YouTube!) The store itself is spacious and well organized, but be very careful with their pricing. I've found that many of their supplies are significantly marked up compared to local craft stores or Amazon. For example, I bought a digital scale here that turned out to be a non-functioning and non-reliable piece of trash. After some research, I realized they charged me three times more than better models available online. Thankfully, I was able to return it. Their fragrance selection and quality is mostly great and I do like their wax. The staff doesn't go out of their way to help but are approachable and friendly. What prompted this review today was a total lack of communication regarding their hours. I checked their website before leaving my house to ensure they were open. The only holiday closure banner on their website was for a holiday that happened months ago (labor day). After a 40-minute drive, I arrived to find the gates closed. I had to pull over and call, only to hear a recording stating they are closed for the next 10 days for holidays and inventory. It's incredibly irritating to waste that much time and gas because a business can't be bothered to update their website. Honestly, it shows that they don't really value their customers or their time.

We really enjoyed the experience and the instructor was friendly and answered everyone's questions. We received a coupon to purchase things after the class so I have supplies and new skills to make some candle gifts! Plenty of parking! Enjoy!

We had Victoria as our guide, and she was super funny, helpful, friendly, and patient with us. She let us try multiple combinations to find our perfect scent for our candles, and even gave us some suggestions when we were stuck on what scent would go best with what. She walked us through how to adjust the color of the wax, and educated us on the general candle making process. The candles only took an hour to solidify and were ready for pickup, so we just grabbed a quick bite while waiting. Would 10/10 bring a friend here to do this again, and HIGHLY recommend taking a class with Victoria! She knows how to work a crowd and made the experience 10x better!

The staff were super nice and helpful and fun and engaging. They offered suggestions even though there were 25+ of us in various stages of attentiveness. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. I had such a nice time that I booked another experience to celebrate my daughter's birthday. This time was different and felt ... perfunctory. We arrived right before our scheduled time, I was starting to tell the person who received us (I was told she was the owner even) that we had arrived quite a bit early (like we got there before the store even opened so we walked around for a bit before arriving 1 min before our reservation) before she abruptly said no it was already time and everyone else had gotten started. Just reminded me of the plethora of email reminders I'd received from them reminding us to arrive on time, allow time for parking, etc. She didn't even greet us or say hello or welcome. Never introduced herself, never asked our names. Just a "do you have a reservation?" And told us to put our stuff down (didn't tell us where) and put on an apron. We ended up putting our things down on someone else's seats because others were standing in front of ours while four others were choosing their scents for their candles. Told us we'd have to wait since there was no room for us to choose our scents so we just stood there. No one even said, hey why don't you wander around the store for a bit until space clears up. And why rudely tell us they'd already started when we just had to stand there and wait anyway? I really felt like we were in the way rather than paying customers, so I told my girls they could look around the shop for a minute rather than awkwardly stand there in front of someone else's seats. The person who helped us with our candle making was nice but kind of just gave us instructions of what to do. One of the girls mentioned how it was kind of like chemistry class so we all talked about science for a bit. I reminded the staff that the day was for my daughter's birthday (I had specified on the reservation) so she gave a quick little happy birthday before moving on. I didn't feel she was particularly helpful though. I asked how we can decide how much of one scent versus another and she just said you kind of just smell it. My daughter asked if she could make the color of her candle a little lighter and the person was just like, well, we can't guarantee what it will look like, but she was very helpful in breaking up the colored wax for her. When we returned to pick up our candles, that was it, they were just sitting there on the counter, packaged up and crammed into one little bag. I wanted to ask for another bag since each candle was going to a different household, but the staff gave off vibes of "go away". I distinctly remember the first time, each candle was packaged in their own little bag with the lid off the candle and they told us it was really important to let the candle "cure" and completely dry for three days before putting the lid on or lighting it. This time the candles were sealed up, no thank you for coming. No I hope you enjoy your candles. I can only assume this day was an outlier and maybe the staff were having a not great day. The experience is not cheap at $60 for which you create a 7 oz candle. I understand the cost isn't just for a candle, but for the experience of creating. The cost of the materials was probably minimal. But for that expense, I would have expected the experience to be a little less icy and a little more friendly (like during my first visit). Thankfully, my girls enjoyed their candles and had fun and were super thankful.
