I'm usually not so long-winded with my Yelp reviews, but I had reserved a chunk of my afternoon for a visit to this store, so I clearly have plenty of time on my hands right now... I discovered General Wax earlier this year when I thought candle making would be a fun hobby. I brought a friend along to their North Hollywood location for what was advertised as an educational class. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like a class much at all but more like an activity. The 'instructor' claimed to sell her own candle creations, yet seemed surprisingly unknowledgeable. Our group was outspoken and asked lots of questions, but she was incredibly vague and nonchalant. When asked basic technical questions like how different fragrances react with specific waxes or how to choose the right wax for a project, she couldn't even provide clear answers. I really didn't learn much of anything at this paid class. (Fyi, I turned to YouTube!) The store itself is spacious and well organized, but be very careful with their pricing. I've found that many of their supplies are significantly marked up compared to local craft stores or Amazon. For example, I bought a digital scale here that turned out to be a non-functioning and non-reliable piece of trash. After some research, I realized they charged me three times more than better models available online. Thankfully, I was able to return it. Their fragrance selection and quality is mostly great and I do like their wax. The staff doesn't go out of their way to help but are approachable and friendly. What prompted this review today was a total lack of communication regarding their hours. I checked their website before leaving my house to ensure they were open. The only holiday closure banner on their website was for a holiday that happened months ago (labor day). After a 40-minute drive, I arrived to find the gates closed. I had to pull over and call, only to hear a recording stating they are closed for the next 10 days for holidays and inventory. It's incredibly irritating to waste that much time and gas because a business can't be bothered to update their website. Honestly, it shows that they don't really value their customers or their time. read more

I saw an ad on instagram and was really happy to see it was so close to my house. So I treated a friend and myself for a candle making class and it was really fun and affordable. We really enjoyed the experience and the instructor was friendly and answered everyone's questions. We received a coupon to purchase things after the class so I have supplies and new skills to make some candle gifts! Plenty of parking! Enjoy! read more

I have been wanting to come here for awhile and have continued to over pay on amazon. I would even go to thrift shops but I really wanted a consist vessel for each one of my candles. I was so excited and pleased with everything. When I walked in I wanted to make sure to take everything in and really see what they had. I like that it is not very overwhelming. Everything is spaced out nicely and organized. They really create an order to the store. Starting with wicks moving on to wax and then vessels and fragrance. They had a scent I have been looking for and was super excited about! They also will let you place orders and shipping orders over the phone if needed. Now on amazon it's probably about 22+ to get a case of candles for 8oz or less depending on the vessel. Amazon will give you 6 or 10 maybe. Here for the same price I got 12 vessels for $23 and some change. Boxed nicely that they will grab for you. The more you buy the more you save. You can buy individually with SOME vessels being as low as a $1. The prices in my opinion are very fair. They even have different shapes, holders, molds, and they offer classes for beginners. I spoke to Gabby and she helped me. I shared with her that I will be back. I really enjoyed speaking to her. The check out process was very easy. I left with 24 vessels and a fragrance for $47 give or take I a not sure. I got my moneys worth in my opinion. I love going to general wax for candle supplies and fragrances. They have so many beautiful candle jars to choose from and various size jars. They have as small as tea light containers to over 16oz containers. You will be sure to find any color candle jar you will need for any occasion. They have so many fragrance options. All of their fragrances are safe to use for clean candle burning. Any fragrance you can think of, general wax will have it or something similar. My favorite is the sage lavender fragrance. I also love the coconut mimosa fragrance. If you would like to learn how to make candles, they offer that option also. They teach candle making classes in the store on different days. I think it's mainly on Saturday's. I've attended 3 classes in the past and I must say it was an amazing experience. I loved the candle that I made! They show you different techniques of candle making depending on the class you choose. I would highly suggest taking a class. The customer service is always good at this location. They're very helpful and will make great suggestions if needed. read more

I have shopped here for over 30 years. In my shop I have designed labels for all 10 colors of the seven day glass jar candles. When I went in last Friday I was told they would be discontinuing six of the colors my customers love. This decision has rendered General Wax useless to my business going forward. What a shame. Do you even care about your customers at all? So now I must set up a candle production at my place of business. I have a place right in my one town to get all the things I need. So the hour and a half I used to drive to get to General wax can now be use more wisely. I love this place and I love the people however, whoever made this devastating decision to limit production of these candle leaves me no choice but to shop elsewhere. I know we are small potatoes to such a large company but seriously you are hurting many small business out here. Usually this is my go to place for candle making supplies. They have a wide variety of scents and containers, but today was no bueno. My experience today greatly disappointed me. I was at home making candles when I ran out of soy wax, so I made the 30 minute drive to this store to get more. Upon arrival at 2:02pm, a lady told me we are CLOSED and we are not making any more sales. I told her that the website and Yelp say otherwise.. it claims they close at 5pm. (See attached pictures) She still had 3 customers waiting in line by the way to check out and I told her all I needed was ONE bag of wax. She said, "Well NO, I'm not going to sell it to you. We are closed and our system already shut down." However she was still able to make the purchase to the 3 customers in line though the system is already "down." I don't believe this. There were another 3 customers who walked in after me and the same message was told to them. They also said they checked online and the hours say the store closes at 5pm. Owner and Manager, if you are reviewing your financial sales, know that you have easily lost 3 sales today in a matter of 20 seconds. Either lock the door or have your associates say it in a nicer way and update this info!! Please update your hours so people don't waste their effort, time and gas. My go to place for candle supplies! Phthalate free fragrance with a loaded fragrance pay off and so many different types of wax! I personally get coconut soy wax and my clients love the end results. If you live in LA and need candle supplies, this is the place to go. They have knowledgeable staff and are always there to answer questions in person when you're there. And last but not very least, they have great vessel selections and usually have some on sale, I usually grab a dozen or so to make some specialty limited edition candles for my shop when I wanna mix it up. I think it is excellent place to buy candles , or if you wish to make your own any possible supply you might need . Making candles could be really tricky , I'm still mastering it;) u have to keep experimenting to find right wick , wax , jar , pour temp etc . So I decide to attend the class they offered on Saturday October 31 . Overall I would recommend the class if u never try to make candle , the class is some what helpful , they nice and they will answer and explain any question u got , but again u will have to experiment home with your wax , read bunch of web post .... Although , if you just make it for yourself , you can't screw up ;) From their fragrances I tried : lotus , water blossom , vanilla extract , French vanilla , lavender romance , coffee , pine . You guys need to stop price gouging your wax. Competitors are not as highly priced as you, I've researched. Every week I go in you go up 10-15 bucks for a box of wax. This place is clearly a shop for professionals that purchase in quantities. So I felt a little intimidated because I'm a beginner. But thanks to Oscar who was very patient and understanding,. I ordered a box of candles only to have them send me and Email after I paid for the item telling me that "Please note that due to extremely high volume of orders, we are experiencing longer processing time than normal."
