Excellent Prices and Outstanding Service at PARR Lumber I…read morehave been purchasing materials from PARR Lumber for the past 20 years for various projects around my home. My most recent purchases included composite decking, as well as pressure-treated lumber for a deck project. One thing I have noticed over the years is that many homeowners with larger projects may not realize how competitive PARR Lumber's prices can be compared with the big-box home improvement stores. For example, on my recent purchase: * 2x8x16' pressure-treated lumber: Box store -- $35.48 vs. PARR Lumber -- $32.88 * 2x6x16' pressure-treated lumber: Box store -- $26.28 vs. PARR Lumber -- $23.83 I found similar savings when purchasing composite decking. Price, however, is only part of the reason I am changing where I purchase my lumber. In the past, I have made several large lumber purchases from big-box stores and had the materials pulled by their employees. When I arrived to pick up my order, I frequently had to wait 45 minutes to over an hour in the loading area. I was often told at the front desk that someone would be out to load my materials in about 15 minutes. More often than not, I eventually had to call the front desk from my truck to find out when someone would be coming. My last two experiences at PARR Lumber in Hillsboro were completely different. For my most recent order, I called ahead and had my materials placed in Will Call. When I arrived, I paid for my order and then proceeded to the loading area. There were at least four vehicles ahead of me waiting to enter the yard, yet I waited only about 10 minutes before entering. Once inside, I immediately noticed how efficiently the yard personnel were working to pull and load materials. When it was my turn, I explained to the employee pulling my order that the lumber was going to be used for deck joists and that I needed relatively straight boards. He told me he would bring the materials out and that we could sort through them together. The majority of the lumber he brought out was good quality, so very little sorting was necessary. I was especially impressed with his professionalism, courtesy, and genuine willingness to make sure I was satisfied with my purchase. Overall, I have noticed significant improvements in efficiency and customer service at the Hillsboro PARR Lumber. My recent experiences have changed my opinion about where to purchase lumber for larger projects. I am now choosing PARR Lumber over the big-box stores for my lumber purchases. The competitive pricing, quality of the materials, and--just as importantly--the efficiency and customer service make PARR Lumber a much better choice for my projects. Highly recommended!

The man at the back counter was awesome, too. He does all the ordering and we talked for sometime. He gave me some good ideas on tools for specialized tasks I needed to do. I saw him all over the store, though....making keys and helping people. Another employee over by the garden section helped me by going out of her way to come up with a way I could modify something to work when I was having no luck otherwise. Worth the drive there! I love Ace Hardware stores in general, but this one deserves an award for the sheer amount of variety, and fabulous staff. (Oh, and afterwards? Go to 'the Taco Bus' just west of there down Pacific Ave past the McMenamins Grand Lodge. All the mexican food there is fabulous and fresh. It was the first time that no one asked if we needed help or if we were looking for something. At one point we did need help but the busy workers just walked on by. I was purchasing several delphiniums and one was falling over. I was trying to find out if someone could find a stick or something to hold it up. The answer was no at least three times. We went to the register and paid and asked one more time. Still no. I then out of frustration walked back to the house plant department and found Julie working. She kindly left what she was doing to find a stick. By then Mike from trees and shrubs was helping too. They supported my beautiful plant and securely tied it. I said to them "thank goodness, I finally got the excellent AL's customer service I've come to expect". They told me they were the longest standing employees there. They then initiated & completed tens of thousands of dollars' worth of new construction, and cheated the main construction laborer. When I asked about my pay, they had their drunken goons, Taran & Wade, menace me with imminent physical violence one night. I called the police to prevent it, and management retaliated by telling me I was a "volunteer" and a "guest," and would have to leave immediately. I asked them about the money they owed me, and they said they owed me nothing (for over a thousand hours of documented work). Then they smeared me to whomever would listen. Horrible people. Horrible. Flowers are pretty anywhere.

This is NOT a good place to buy anything that your life depends on... like lifts, jack stands, ramps and so on. Also not a good place to buy if you are looking for professional grade, precision items. I've been wrenching since I was a wiener so I know the value of tools that can be dual-purposed as pry-bars and sledge hammers. I have a fair number of crappy tools that have served me well for the purposes that I needed them to. I also have a fair number of tools that came from Snap-on, Craftsman and suppliers like those. A cheapo socket set? A set of drift pins? Yep, this is the place. A precision torque wrench that will get a lot of use? Maybe not so much. The employees at these places are usually low quality just like the merchandise. I don't mean this as a slam. You're going there to save money right? Not to have a great customer experience, get great advice and walk out with high quality tools at prices that are in the stratosphere. If the cashier even looks at you and acknowledges your presence you should feel lucky. Most of the time the employees are so totally indifferent to you that they will actually turn around and walk the other way if you look like you are going to ask them a question. I've been to this particular store many (MANY) times and this is one reliable constant here. They typically have on one cashier on duty and a line of many customers. And that one cashier has only one speed.... s-l-o-w! I'm going to guess that HF doesn't pay very well so attracting good employees probably isn't on the corporate radar. Not every project requires top-of-the-line tools to accomplish. I do a lot of repairs that only require a tool that works, not necessarily a tool that would work well in daily use. So in that regard, HF fulfills it's purpose and most of us don't have the disposable funds to be buying the best possible tool if it's only going to be used rarely. HF is popular with professional mechanics so perfectly serviceable equipment can be had here at low prices. You just need to know how to spot quality vs junk. Hence the 4 stars for fulfilling a needed service. If I was to grade the staff, it would be a solid one star and that would be generous.
