I submitted a request on Yelp for a handyman and Guilherme of 101 Assembly responded quickly with a friendly message, asking for photos or a link to pictures of the vanity and desk. I sent him photos and within a few hours, he responded back with a quote, which was quite reasonable. We made an appointment for Saturday morning as we wanted to surprise our daughter with the vanity built for her birthday. My son was also excited that his desk was going to be assembled as he wanted someplace to study, as well as a place to sit and play online Roblox with his friends instead of the dining room table. Guilherme texted me 15 minutes before our appointment to say that they were running behind schedule and would be at our home 20 minutes later than our scheduled appointment. I appreciated his communication with me that they were going to be late. When Guilherme arrived, he was accompanied by Isabella (who I learned was his fiancée who works with him). They were very friendly, and both went right to work on assembling the two items. They were professional, efficient and friendly, moving each of the furniture items after they were assembled to where we wanted them in our kids rooms. Great service! We will definitely hire them again for our furniture assembly needs!

Unfortunately, I didn't have a positive experience overall…read more TL;DR: I would recommend for small, simple assembly jobs, but I wouldn't trust him for larger or more complex furniture projects. More details: I hired Selim to install a Murphy bed. The first issue was that he didn't pay attention to the bed's dimensions ahead of time. As soon as he arrived, he increased the price and repeatedly commented that he would have brought another person if he had known the correct size (when the issue was simply a lack of attention beforehand). He wasn't able to complete the job properly. The bed wouldn't close, and he couldn't identify the problem, leaving me to troubleshoot it myself. I spent hours trying to fix it and eventually noticed missing screws and other signs of inappropriate installation. In the end, I still had to pay the full price and then hire someone else to redo the same job correctly (paying twice for the same service). I asked for a 50% refund, but he refunded less than 15%. I honestly felt bad because he seems like a genuinely nice person. However, I lost a significant amount of money, time, and dealt with a lot of unnecessary stress. This was a job I paid for specifically to make things easier, not harder.

We sent our kitchen assembly instructions ahead of time to make sure they were aware. My overall sense is that Carlos is fairly capable and experienced but either his team or him are not as careful as we had damages to our finished wood toe kicks and our lacquer cabinets looked like they had been dragged over nails as they were being assembled. I didn't appreciate that they made 0 mention of it at all and I had to point it out. As the homeowner, I essentially had to baby sit them for 5 days through the install since it felt like they were incapable / unwilling to read the kitchen cabinet installation instructions in detail and I caught several mistakes early on during the cabinet assembly that made me hesitant to leave it unattended. Carlos's attitude was particularly bad through the entire experience as well. Always made it seem like we were inconveniencing him or being too nit picky even if we caught some mistakes. At one point, he even threatened to quit after the assembly but before the installation simply because he had underestimated the complexity of the project. We did have a 1 day delay due to some plumbing / electrical issues but that's pretty typical as far as kitchen cabinet installations go AFAIK. In the end, they were able to get all the kitchen cabinets installed, albeit with a lot of effort from my end due to the more custom nature of the project. The price was affordable and the work was solid (minus the scratches) but for me the bad attitude wasn't worth it.

You could tell he knew exactly what he was doing. Would recommend Jake for anyone needing furniture installation that requires some real muscle and precision. We'd call on him again for future fixes.

Taking batteries out of packaging and organizing them in a container he supplied, for example. I had family staying in the guest room after he was here and it was easier for everyone to find what was needed quickly. Very nice feeling. He was conscientious and responsible. Actually there are some papers, DVD's etc. that we did not get to but I intend to have him back to organize/declutter soon. Plus his hourly rate was less than another person who had been recommended and with whom I did a Zoom call before deciding on Tom. He can make a difference.

But the boxes arrived in CA several days earlier than forecast, and were accumulating storage fees at the train station in Emeryville. But I could not pick them up early because I was driving across country, and wanting to spend time with family along the way. Tom picked up the boxes, and transported to my storage locker in Berkeley. This required working with Amtrak staff, coordinating with the storage place, and re-organizing my messy and rather full storage unit to accommodate 9 additional large boxes. Thanks to Tom, I was able to spend extra days with my family, instead of adding an extra 500 mile roundtrip to deal with the boxes myself. All I had to do was explain the situation to Tom and mail him a key. He took care of the rest. I arrived to find my boxes neatly stacked at the front of the unit, somehow with room to spare. I could not have been happier with this experience.

We hired him for a bunch of projects throughout our house, adding light fixtures, fixing drywall, painting, and putting up a barn door. Jason completed them... very poorly. When he came to fix and texture the drywall he brought one of his buddies who was hungover and kept telling us as much, and his work product reflects that as well. When it came time for the "big project" the barn door Jason made the process as difficult as possible. Firstly when everything arrived he didn't bother to open the box and see what hardware was included and what may be needed for the install. Then he did the initial install and blamed the parts for being bad. After a lot of back and forth with him and the company we decided to go a different route and purchase the main rail ourselves and have Jason fit it. The project that was supposed to take a few hours ended up taking days with Jason continually making excuses and blaming the product instead of taking accountability. At one point even saying to me "I'm not redoing this rail, we should just cut the door." A $3,000.00 custom door?!? Yeah no we're not cutting that. So he had to come back and redo everything again, this time chipping and damaging our barndoor and making the soft close in operable. By this point I had enough of his services so we paid him and were done with it. While he did offer to come help fix the scratches and gouges he made on the door, it was done so in a rude manner at one point even being extremely misogynistic towards my wife, needless to say we simply do not trust him to ever set foot in our house again. You're better off paying the extra money and going with someone that is actually licensed, bonded and insured. Learn from our mistakes and save yourself the time, money and headache.
