In answering another customer's questions about where to buy certain ingredients for one of his delicious dishes he referred her, and as a result us, to Kabul. While many of Boise's Middle Eastern markets are owned by people with Iraqi heritage, the owner's heritage here is Afghani, hence the name of the store. You will find some food products here you won't find elsewhere. For example, on the hunt for real Aleppo pepper, this is the only store of any specialty markets or grocers in all of greater Boise where we could find it. Also, looked for real Armenian style fresh Lavash for a friend, this is the only store of any kind where we could find that too (in the refrigerated case). We also noticed some Armenian specialty grocery products, like preserved pumpkin and other similar confiture, as well as Middle Eastern products. The overall inventory here may be smaller than some other Middle Eastern specialty markets, but for some ingredients this may be the only source. There are also some kitchenware and houseware items. The owner is a really nice man who is super helpful in assisting to scout out products in the store so if you don't immediately see what you're on the hunt for, he'll help you find it if you ask. THIS N THAT: 1) LOCATION: In a decrepit strip mall on Overland, the neighbor is a "adult" video store / club. Don't let that dissuade you. 2) PARKING: In a paved lot that is in disrepair. That is the lot owner's issue not the store owner's. One marked accessible parking spot in the lot, but no curb/cut ramp that would allow a person using a wheelchair to get on the sidewalk to get in the door. Violates ADA and Idaho code, both 27 years old. The lot owner has had plenty of time to fix this. 3) ACCESSIBILITY: See parking comments above. If you are able to get in the door, all is on one level with ample space in aisles.

WHAT'S NEW: The Herreras retained the name and have kept many of the items beloved by customers of the original bakery but they have also expanded options, as one might expect from a pastry chef with 30'ish years experience. They have added additional cases to the interior and also expanded options for custom orders. All good for eats! PLAN TO BUY AND GO: Too small a space inside for seating and only enough outside for maybe a couple of seats, so this is a buy and take away format. ACCESSIBILITY: That I have posted 22 photos of this bakery since it opened in 2021 to now, it is evident that I am a fan of the offerings and also an avid supporter of mom-n-pop local businesses. But I am also a customer with disabilities and given the ADA will turn 36 years old this month, it is also an appropriate time to say why they seldom get my business anymore. It is all about the location's small parking lot with angled spaces and only one ADA compliant spot at the far end, near a hair salon, with often someone parking (illegally) in the striped access aisle. The only way for a wheelchair user to get up on to the walkway to get into the doors of the shops is through that access aisle and when it is blocked, so am I. For that reason, this good business has largely lost my business. Alas. CHECK HOURS BEFORE GOING: Usually open Thu - Sat from about 9A to 2P but sometimes closed if catering an out of town event so check before you go is a good idea.

I heard I completely missed out on their focaccia the day I went, which apparently is a mistake I need to correct immediately. I did try the croissants though, and honestly it's hard to find a truly good croissant around here without driving all the way to Janjou Pâtisserie -- and that place absolutely ruins you for croissants forever. One other thing worth noting: check their hours before you go because they're only open Thursday-Saturday. It's also a great little spot to grab packaged cookies or treats for gifts.

I recently visited for the first time and was beyond impressed with the wide variety of food items from all over the world. My plan was to stop in and take a few pictures, but I was there for over two hours, because there was so much to look at. The produce section includes items you won't find anywhere else. Much of the produce is grown locally by Kahm, on his farm in Kuna. Kahm kindly invited me to visit his farm next spring/summer. I can't wait! My husband and I decided to stop by here while we were staying in Boise last month. When we came in, we were greeted by the employee behind the register. We walked the narrow aisles, pushing our shopping cart, looking at everything. We ended up only purchasing dried squid for $3.29 (prior to tax). We opted for the non spicy version but there is also a spicy version for those that prefer the added kick. I have never seen dried squid come in long sheets like this before at the other Asian markets that I have gone to back at home in Los Angeles. The squid was good with a light sweet tomato flavor. It had a nice light chew as well. If I lived in this area, I would be back to purchase more snacks and drinks. I would probably also consider purchasing some of the frozen seafood too. I have driven past India Foods for quite some time but never stopped. I was surprised by how large the store was. From the outside, it looks rather small but it was nearly as large as the Asia Market and Orient Market in town. They had the powdered Kashmiri chile pepper and many other spices and food products. Many products that I hadn't seen at the other stores, because of their emphasis on Indian foods. Fresh produce items didn't seem at their peak, so that's something that I would look for other sources. The Asia Market gets its fresh produce on Fridays, the Orient a day later and they're always in good condition. Overall, though, I was pleased by the selection at this store.

SERVICE: This little market may be the only one specializing in Korean foods but the others sell Korean products too. I hope the pattern of mega-stores upending the little ones like this doesn't happen because the advantage of Diana's is the nice people who own it. They speak more English than I speak Hangul, which is to say I speak none, and so although most of the packaging is in Korean characters for labels and ingredients, they can always help me out. PRODUCTS: There are packaged goods like dried mushrooms (at bargain price), Gochuchang, dried Korean chilis (which really have no substitute), noodles, kimchi and...endless other items. There is a refrigerator and freezer in the back of the store for marinated meat products and although I've never tried them, I understand they are house made. They also have a few selections in serveware and homegoods. WE LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER: On a recent visit my hubby and I were one of only three customers in the store. The other customer was a Korean woman who asked me, in delightfully halting English and with obvious surprise in her voice seeing the items I was buying, "How you know what to buy? You have Korean friend who cooks for you?" I laughed and answered that I didn't and that I was cooking myself since I was reading about Korean dishes and asked if she wanted to be my friend and cook for me. She laughed too as she replied, "I don't cook. But we be friends and go to HIS house. HE cook." HE meaning the owner who was at the register that day. Alas that he didn't take her up on the swell suggestion! But the point is food is a great connector for people across cultures, as this nice woman demonstrated. We all eat and have things to teach and learn from each other across a dining table. ACCESSIBILITY: Located in one of Boise's many woefully maintained strip malls, the parking and path of travel from parking to the sidewalk are not ADA compliant (although that law is 28 years old) and will be difficult for people with mobility disabilities - like me. That is the fault of the strip mall owner and not the owner of Diana's.

They carry all sorts of things made in Korea not only food. If you can't find the thing you need then they can try to order it for you! Like the last time I was looking for flavored soju (Korean rice wine), then the following week they ordered 5 different kinds of flavored soju for me! They also have some fresh produce every Friday morning! I love coming here!
