I started coming here to get my hair cut a number of years ago after finally giving up on the…read morequick, super-inexpensive chains, and also being turned off by the stuffier, high-priced salons. For me, Rose-Dore is in the Goldilocks zone for hair cuts. Nan has been my stylist since I started coming here, and she always does a great job! My hair is wavy to curly depending on the humidity level, and can be a disaster if cut wrong (see previous note on giving up on the quick, super-inexpensive chains). She also gives me no grief about waiting way too long at times to come in for a cut, and also no grief about not coloring away the gray. I'm too lazy/low maintenance to deal with roots...so figure it is better to just stay natural...(see previous note about stuffy higher-priced salons). The atmosphere is really relaxed and prices are very reasonable. Same week appointments are typically available. Rose-Dore is a great northwest side option for a relaxed, no-nonsense, but high-quality hair cut!

UPDATE: This Review Got Me Banned from Rose-Dore. You Can…read moreStill See The Note behind The Receptionist's Desk which says "Do Not Make Appointments for Jon F_____." Now they don't permit any stylists to cut my hair, lol. Very immature business practice-- 1. Provide unsatisfactory service, 2. Ban any customer that leave a negative review 3. Do not, under any circumstances, contact unsatisfied customers after giving them the "Trump" haircut. Do not ask them about their experiences, or how to improve. At Rose Dore, we rush the customer out because we've got more hair to cut! Just to clarify the above policy at Rose Dore, what I'm saying is that Rose Dore's business practice is below average. In the past several years, I have written 2 other negative reviews, and those companies left a concerned comment under my review about my experience. The above post-it is obviously in response to this negative review I wrote, because that note went up right after I published this review (and not right after my latest haircut)... -- My first experience was great. Nikki Young was great. 5 stars all the way! I continued seeing Nikki until she moved. She no longer works there, and my next experience was great as well. Emily. 5 stars again! I was told that Emily (I think) is the one who cuts men's hair, and she did a perfect job. That was December 9th, 2014. Then I went in and set up an appointment again in March. This time, I was told that they ALL cut men's hair. So Stephanie ended up cutting my hair. She'd been working there 35 years. Got in my car. Looked at it in the mirror. It looked awful. I felt so embarrassed I couldn't even go into Starbucks. It looked like a rushed drill sergeant cut my hair. I have photos of this haircut in case anyone believes I'm making this up. In fact maybe I'll post them in this review. There was a section above one ear that was clipped very short and looked like the clippers were used there and then stopped. I drove back and showed her the section. I said that she can just cut it all short if necessary. She said "That won't be necessary," and she cut both sides short, blended it better, then gave me a mirror. It was now short on the sides and long on top and in the back. I suggested she cut the back shorter to match the length of the sides. I already felt sick going in to tell her it had to be fixed, but I did pay her and also tipped her 20%, so felt I deserved to have a decent haircut. After the "fix," I just wanted to leave, because Stephanie said, "Okay, now it looks better." without asking for any confirmation. I felt like I was being picky, but it wasn't getting fixed and I didn't know how to tell her that it looked TERRIBLE. In the end I gave up and left, deciding that I'll pay someone else to try to fix it. When I got home I took another look. One sideburn was an inch lower than the other sideburn. I fixed that. Easy. Though it is telling how someone could miss that. Maybe she's great at cutting women's hair--maybe she just doesn't know how to cut men's hair. My friend Meredith said that maybe her eyes aren't very good. Maybe she forgot her glasses or contacts the day she cut my hair. I'm not trying to insult anyone, I'm just trying to explain this. All I know is it looks ridiculous and I have photos. I can't understand how a person can cut hair for 35 years and not take one last look at the overall haircut and notice a chunk that's cut shorter than the rest of the hair, or looking straight on, notice that one sideburn is so much different from the other (the hair was not only lower, but longer... one sideburn was taken care of, and the other was not). Also if you glance at any part of it, it has a long tuft here and there peeking out from the surrounding short hair. In addition to that, she asked me if I ever used "product" in my hair. I stated that Nikki Young (who used to cut my hair) had used Aveda Pure-formance for men, and I loved that product so much I bought it myself, but aside from that, I hate product and very rarely use any product at all. Despite my saying this, Stephanie used American Crew Fiber (which I hate...it's like putting glue in your hair). I'd advise against getting your hair cut there if you're a guy, unless you can get Emily. Be sure you tell them Emily (or Stephanie... maybe it's Stephanie. Either Stephanie is the horrible one and Emily is the great one, or Emily is the horrible one and Stephanie is the great one. Now I don't remember). The owners of Rose Dore do not care to find out about my experience. I'm just a customer. I'd rather have Donald Trump's hair than the messed up disaster she gave me at Rose Dore. What's telling is that after posting this review, not only did no one reach out to me to correct their error or inquire about my experience, but also a glowing review popped up 7 days after my review was posted. That review was written by Michellene, the daughter of the owner of Rose Dore...

Full disclosure: I received my full service through a coupon that I got in the mail last week…read more... and I was not disappointed! If you are looking for a nail salon that doesn't have all of the frills and is justly priced (eyebrow wax is $10 for reference) then definitely check this place out. I called an hour and a half before close to ask if they were available for the three services I wanted (gel mani, pedi, and eyebrow wax). I was greeted warmly and told that they were free. When I arrived, I was welcomed with a bright smile and even brighter "hello!" As I chose my color, the nail tech prepped the pedi foot bath for me. The overall salon looked pretty clean to me and I even spotted bottles of cleaner at all of the stations to help maintain that state. The pedicure was expertly done. My nail tech was a true master of her art despite not being very talkative (great situation for an introvert like myself that struggles with small talk). A note that when I mentioned no frills, I mean it. The chairs are standard chairs with no massage capabilities and you aren't given disposable flip flops to wear afterwards. If these are things that you are expecting, then you will be disappointed. However if you are just looking to get serviced at a great price, then simply bring your own flip flops! That being said, my nails were dry enough to put shoes on immediately afterwards. The nail tech also did a great job on the mani. Very straightforward and smoothly applied. No upselling either! Finally the eyebrow waxing was professionally done. It wasn't just your run of the mill wax application and tear. The tech shaped the wax smoothly and ripped in one, minimizing possible pain. She then furthered the cleaning with tweezers and trimmed the eyebrows slightly to give a clean look. Great work! The only downside was that I didn't get my nail tech's name so I could openly recognize her. Also they take card in case you were wondering. Tips can be applied via card or in the form of cash (preferred format for tips). A great, straightforward nail salon that is not far from home.
