I went for a free consult for laser hair removal. They seem to know what they are doing but I did not feel welcomed or happy when I left. They were very short and borderline unfriendly, I didn't even get a sample of the laser to see how it feels (and I didn't think to ask, only now that I have gone to another place and read more reviews do I know this would have been something to try). I have been a client of Essentially Bare for many years. After years of sun exposure, especially on my neck and chest, Kelly recommended IPL to treat and correct the sun damage and age spots. Beware of this establishment. I took up a special offer - which, when I went they said they could not remember despite it being advertised on their website! However, they gave me the rate for a light chemical peel but did not include the facial advertised. Second time, within hours my face went red & began swelling to about 4x its normal size! I spent the following day in hospital! Three doctor visits & a course of cortisone & 2 sets of antihistamines later, Essentially Bare had failed to apologize, ignored my requests for a refund even though I informed them of my dr's details. They took a week to send a list of ingredients for my doctors & then only after I threatened legal action. AVOID this establishment; rather go to a proper dermatologist. read more

Love this place. I had been a customer years ago (guessing 2001-2003?). I made an appointment last year and I was no longer in the computer but the owner actually remembered me. I have been to both locations. I really like that this place is professional and never push to sell things you don't need. They don't push expensive packages, like other places, and you really see results. I trust Kelly's recommendations and am looking forward to trying out some of the latest services available. I had wanted to get microneedling but at my appointment I realized I would have too much downtime, so I opted for a "Hollywood" peel. For $300 it was a huge disappointment. It did not brighten or improve my skin much as it had been touted to do. I have had other cheaper peels and microdermasions with much better results. A waste of time and money. After spending a ton of money on skincare that was not helping reduce or improve my acne, acne scars, and milia, I decided to come to Essentially Bare for carbon spectra peel. This place was highly recommended by my friend who used to have hormonal acne and now her skin is flawless from several sessions of the carbon spectra peel. When I first did the peel, I didn't notice any results and my friend said the same thing. However, I noticed immediate results after my second session. My scars have lightened, my milia has stopped in some areas, and now I only have barely mild acne. Like any skincare product/technique, do not expect miracles to happen right away. I'm mixed. The staff are very personable and helpful, and appointments are plentiful. The prices (Living Social) are good, yes, but the quality of the Botox treatments aren't nearly as effective as others I've had. I hear stories about watered down or expired product. I don't want to accuse but it seems strange that this is the only place I've been to (2-3 times) that the botox hasn't worked well and lasted only only a fraction of time than the others. Is there an option for zero stars? I went here for laser hair removal and was left with scarring for several months. I have had laser before and after this without issue. I came back 3 months later and still had scarring, instead of giving me a refund they tried to claim I had been out in the sun and that was why I was scarred. Terrible customer service! I bought a Living Social voucher and they scheduled me for the wrong location. I waited at one site and there was no one there; I waited for an hour, I received no apology after four interactions. I had to ask someone to apologize to get one. It was finally clear I would never be able to make it during the available times they offered, so I demanded a refund. They proceeded to call several times to set up an appt. Clearly there is no care for customers; no follow-through nor organization. So I didn't think they would ever be responsible with my skin. read more

Last month I went into the Cambridge office for the "VeinGogh" treatment for the unsightly spider veins on my nose and cheeks. The results were amazing! The treatment is no worse than a burning sensation and the resulting slight "cat scratches" disappear within a week. What emerges is clear, blemish free skin where the veins were. The veins I had for years were gone and I couldn't be happier. The director, Kelly C, performed the treatment. I was very impressed by her commitment to making me feel comfortable and the honest advice given. As a health care professional for twenty years I can easily sniff out a scam or unscrupulous person. This definitely is not the case, Kelly was knowledgeable and did not try to sell me something that i didnt need. I returned last week for my gratis follow up appt. for a "touch up" and encountered the same professionalism. I as well visited the South End location for Botox and had the same experience as with Cambridge. In addition, making appointments was easy; anytime I had to leave a message my calls were promptly returned. I used to love this place. I was a loyal botox customer for over 6 years. My last experience was a joke, and for all the money I have spent at this place, I expected a little more of a heart felt apology for what happened. Each visit I spend around $800, and when a person is spending this much, you expect an amazing pampering experience, with professional people. There was a new nurse that was hired to do these injections. I showed up on time to my appointment (in the south end), along with another patron. We waited for over 45 minutes-no call, no nurse. Finally I called Kelly the owner, and stated who I was, and asked what was going on. She stated she didn't know and hadn't heard from the nurse. Finally the nurse showed up, all in a tizzy, running down the stairs saying she got stuck in traffic (mind you she was 45 late, but didn't bother to call her boss, or the paying customers that were waiting for over an hour after they had been at work all day long). Then, when she goes to get into the door to the treatment room, it's locked and she realized she didn't have the correct keys, and all the botox was in that locked room. This was when the "professional" nurse, who is going to stick a needle in my face, starts saying very unprofessional and childish remarks. Then she manages to tell us that we have to wait another hour for the owner to drive botox over to this office. Now remember this is Boston rush hour at 5:30 pm. Finally my boyfriend got so fed up, he took his credit card and opened the door, jimmying the lock. Why I let her inject me, I don't know, but after waiting for over 2 hours I wasn't about to leave. It was horrible, and the owner Kelly never even really apologized, nor did she offer me any reduced service or products for our hassle. And to top it all off.......the other woman that was getting botox, was a 6 month pregnant woman. As a nurse myself.......I didn't think that was advisable. I gave them one more chance to redeem themselves, and went back again asking to see a different nurse, and I got the same results, as it appears many people have.........botox that doesn't work. I still had movement in my face, after spending yet another $600. So needless to say, I am done giving Essentially Bare my hard earned money. I will never go back again, and I will spend my money at a spa that treats people like they are at a spa, and actually appreciates my patronage. read more

BUYERS BEWARE!!! I was recently shopping around for a cheaper rate for Botox than the average $350 per area and I was really excited when I called Essentially Bare. They told me that because they do it by the unit it would be cheaper. I would only be paying for what I needed. At $15 per unit I could end up paying as little as $225 for an area like the "elevens". In the procedure room, under the bright light, I was told that my facial muscles were so strong that it would require at least 30 units to take care of my "elevens". In other words $450. When I asked why I was quoted a lower price on the phone, she said, well of course we can't tell until we see you. I have had this treatment successfully done before for only $350 and they were up front about the cost. I would never go back to Essentially Bare and I don't recommend it to anyone. read more

This place is fantastic. I have been suffering from melasma under my eyes and on my upper lip for the last three years. I looked like I had a mustache. I lived in Baltimore and was getting chemical peels and using hydroquinone and that was only mildly helping. When I moved here I looked on yelp to find a place where I could continue getting chemical peels and found essentially bare. I was told that they had a non heat based laser treatment and that they were seeing excellent results for treating melasma, not only did they inform me of this but their prices for chemical peels were SO much cheaper than what I had been paying in baltimore that I had to go for a consult. I made an appointment with Julie. Julie is a LIFE SAVER. First off, she is so honest about the process and you have to believe her. She told me that everyone is different but you usually don't see results until the 4th treatment and that you have to be patient, so I was. The results have been incredible. After the 6th treatment my spots started to fade and by the 12th, parts disappeared. Melasma is stubborn and I have a few tiny spots that are still there so I am continuing treatment and they are actually fading, something I didn't think was possible. There is no cure for melasma but because of this treatment (that only essentially bare offers in the ENTIRE boston area) my face doesn't look like it has giant brown splotches all over it. I used to not be able to cover the melasma with make up, it would still show. Now make up makes my face spotless and you can't even see the melasma without make up--looks like freckles. I used to never put my face in pictures because of the melasma, now I do! because there are no more ugly spots! You have to still keep your face out of the sun, wear a hat, but essentially bare has changed my face dramatically. Julie is a god send. She doesn't force things on you, or tell you need things you don't. My old aesthetician made me feel like I needed unnecessary treatments, Julie doesn't. She's just great. I highly recommend essentially bare, they know how to treat your skin and they know how to take care of their customers. read more
