The Cow&Co Cafe - choc chip shortbread (2016)

After a failed attempt to get breakfast/brunch at The Bagelry in Chinatown, we decided to give The…read moreCow&Co Cafe a try instead. At the 'other end' of the street, it felt like a long walk to get there (especially with a growing hunger after a few drinks the night before) but as soon as we found it we knew we'd made the right choice. The location almost feels like a cul-de-sac, with a dog grooming salon next door and plenty of prams being pushed past. This meant it was a more relaxed vibe than elsewhere, and we easily got a table for two in the sunny window. There is a mezzanine level also, but no table service, which is worth considering if you or someone in your party struggles with stairs. The menu is on a blackboard, with changing specials, and plenty of proper coffee and tea on offer. Orders are taken at the small bar and processed in the same spot, meaning service isn't the quickest, but we were in no rush and everything was done with a smile. I went simple with a cheese and ham croissant, served warm, and a cup of tea. Josh's sandwich was much more substantial and it's fair to say I had food envy; mixed beans, peppers and aubergine on fresh wholemeal bread. Needless to say, with this delicious food and sunny window spot, we didn't really want to move! In no rush, we also shared a chocolate chip shortbread as we finished our drinks. A lovely start to our Saturday.

I love this place. You could walk right past it every day and never know it existed, but I think…read moreit's fab. There's nothing particularly outstanding about Ginger, although the food is pretty damn good, but its your general run-of-the-mill cafe. There are a whole load of smoothies and fresh juices to choose from, and although the menu isn't extensive, what you do get is fab. It's in quite a good location too: right next to the 80, 75 and 86 bus stop, a short walk from the pubs on Smithdown and all the student housing, and not that far from Sefton Park. Ginger is one of those places you'll accidentally drop in to one day and then end up going every week. I really hope this place isn't affected by the credit crunch, as it truly is a hidden gem.

Ginger Up is well decorated, spacious and comfortable. The staff are friendly, greeting you as soon as you walk in and offering their help. They are happy to suggest a smoothie to try, or just let you ponder your decision for a long as possible. The smoothies here are freshly made and are delicious. The range available is not massive but there are still a good few options to choose from. The coffee is freshly brewed and delicious. Again there is not a huge range of hot drinks available but the ones that are sound very tasty. The food and drinks are reasonably priced and come in good portions and sizes. This is a good place for a quiet drink and a chat with a friend. Look out for this place and give it a try.

    Welc Cafe

Even as I walked through the doors I was n't too sure what I was getting here. The Welc seems to…read morebe a converted garage with some patio furniture set outside and as I drew closer to the huge piles of charcoal near the entrance I thought maybe this could be a garden wholesalers. Inside however the feel of a makeshift coffee shop was very welcoming as the ladies there had big smiles and hellos for me as I entered. With the cobbled together interior of couches, office executive chairs and left overs from antique shops I wondered whether this place was a charity of sorts - at the very least it was put together as a space for the girls here to just have a good old natter. Most surprisingly, however, amidst this jumble of furniture was the menu which had a choice of Red Snapper, Seabass and Pizzas along with the more conventional soups salads and baguettes. Easing into the Smooth FM vibe I could take in the wall decoration of prints by local artists which as well as including the obligatory Beatles prints also had a collection of early seaside postcards in the dirty, British Benny Hill style humour. Eclectic, unusual, friendly and unique.

I was so shocked when I crossed the garage-esque front into a spacious well-decorated cafe I thought I'd quite possibly crossed over into a parallel universe! Very at one with nature and the natural, Welc (short for sea snails, maybe!?) has a spiritual wellbeing clinic upstairs, they also have yoga on wednesdays at 6.15pm and sell a range of detox teas...they should rename them though... I don't know anyone who would be appetised by "lung tea" or "liver tea"... perhaps 'hangover curing tea' might be more appropriate! And, they have a refreshing range of foods which isn't your run of the mill cafe standard but a mainly fresh fish based specials menu, serving red snapper, sea bass and many more tantalising treats! Serving wines and coffees as well as their abundant food menu, in a friendly, leafy surrounding with walls that are covered with quirky memorabilia and nic-nacs, it's no surprise that this is my new found favourite on Smithdown!
