Lovely place with very good food. I ordered the steak which was good, though a bit overcooked. It was supposed to be medium rare and I ordered rare to be safe, but it was well done... the potatoes were excellent and melted in my mouth. Good sauce, though a bit too much of it everywhere so your plate is oily. Excellent service, friendly, despite having to order at the bar. I had ordered a warm chocolate brownie and they ran out. They came and proposed I changed, and when nothing was of my fancy, they offered me a free hot chocolate.

I'm so glad I found this place! From the decor, design to the food options and drinks, I fell in love! Such a cute and garden inspired location. Great amount of tables for dates to big parties. I like that they seat you but you have to go to the counter to order your food when you are ready. Their menu is full of a wide range of food options and drinks. When I went I had their avocado and toast and it was delicious and packed with flavor. I also had a fresh orange juice and it was glorious! Perfect for the day after going out drinking! What makes it even better is that prices are good for the quality and service you get. I can't wait to go back!

Leaf is a beloved Liverpool institution and was one long before Bold Street cleaned up its act, Mowgli moved in, and it became the hipster restaurant mecca it is today. I knew it initially as the upstairs was a venue for Liverpool Sound City, back when it took place primarily in the Ropewalks area. I've eaten there, I've taken tea there, I've had drinks there with my friends. The staff are great and the patrons often even more so: if Liverpudlians hear a non-Scouse accent here, anticipate their desire to start a conversation and help a visitor out. Choose a place to sit, order at the bar and tell the staff where you're sitting, and wait for your order to appear, delivered by someone with an adorable Scouse accent. The food portions tend to be pretty big: you're in the North, lads and lasses. The more you talk to English people of a certain age, and even a wider swath of ages the further north you go, the more you come to realize just how important the ritual of tea drinking is to them. The illuminated sign "Where there's tea, there's hope" in the shop isn't a joke. When you're at the bar, you'll see the coffee machine, sure, but you'll also see the many canisters of tea on offer. Tea here comes in individual see-through pots, showing Leaf's modern edge on a long-standing English/British tradition. You simply must order tea here because you're totally missing out if you don't. It's called Leaf for a reason! There is a small alcove 'shop' adjacent to the bar where you can pick up tea bags, diffusers, and the like. It gets very busy at lunch and brunch times; pack patience. There's a weird quirk about the front door: you need to push it because it opens inward, which seems odd because it's a really big glass door and oftentimes shop doors in England open outward. Also, you need to serve yourself water from the dispenser at the bar, something I always seem to forget until a staff member taking my order sets me right. A Manchester outpost of Leaf now exists, but I can't imagine it would ever compare favorably to the original location. I miss the pescetarian full breakfast and while they've now got small plate options, this is the kind of place I'd always order one big dish for either lunch or dinner. You'll be glad you did.

We were in Liverpool over the weekend so I had a look around for a good place to have breakfast at on our last day. I came across Leaf through other Yelp recommendations. The atmosphere in the cafe/restaurant was really nice, the decorations very hip and the staff were rushed off their feet but really nice anyway. All five of us chose different things from the brunch menu. I went for the french toast with banana mascarpone, while others had the full English, eggs with cheese and chorizo, soup of the day and eggs benny. The coffee was delicious and the food was nice. I would probably go back there again!

Really great place! I went just for an afternoon drink with some friends and the place was busy send vibrant. The staff were accommodating. I would recommend the pinot grigio rose and the warm chocolate brownie (with clotted cream) is one of the best I've had anywhere. Definitely give it a visit!

The Leaf on Bold does the traditional English breakfast better than anyone
    Randall W.

OK. So everything here cost's a dollar more than the chain pub fare. The menu doesn't look all that inspired, just "trendy." At £6.50 one can get a cheaper breakfast, but not a better deal. The biggest deal at Leaf is that the food is impeccable. It comes out looking like the regular full English Breakfast, only better, more appetizing in appearance. You're slightly embarrassed to say that you just might like that traditional English breakfast this morning. That's the story, nothing unusual. Just unusually good. Everything served at Leaf is amongst the best or better than you ever had. It's the modern independent pub. New cuisine methodology will work on the old fare. Better come early, before 10am or be prepared to queue up. The word is out and the creatives near Liverpool One show up at Leaf on Bold. Congrats for getting everything right.

(Partially eaten) lemon and coriander hummus, £3.

I've fallen so madly in love with Leaf that I'm not sure where to start! Leaf is a tea shop that specialises in just that - tea - but it 's also a fantastically arty spot that holds chess days, live performances (The Wombats spring to mind) and vintage fairs. The Wombats claim that they had Leaf hummus every day when they were recording This Modern Glitch, so I had to see how good it was! After looking at their website, Leaf was literally number one on my priority list when I next went to Liverpool - and it charmed my socks (sorry, seamed tights) off! I had coriander and lemon hummus with Tea of the Week, silver needle with mint, and it was literally the best thing I'd ever had - cue daydreaming about it for the next few hours... What more can I say? It's furnished with long wooden tables, chalk boards, dressers, bicycle-print chairs... it's sociable, but not noisy... vegan options are made clear... the servers are super nice! There is just something really romantic about sitting at a sturdy wooden table with tea and a good book, seeing people playing chess around you, and looking at a counter with glass and cake stands and countless types of tea - fantastic. If I miss my offer for the university, Leaf will be one of the aspects of Liverpool I miss most sorely!

Amazing place. You can go any hour in the day, and you will find a nice surprise. If you want to take a good tea, drink a beer, check your mails in your laptop, eat something, listen live music or just meet with your friends. This is the place! I recommend the egg florentine for brunch the weekends! Cute vintage decoration.

Live music, book clubs, quirky parties, friendly staff, and brownies that quite possibly beat the gorgeous ones I use to grab on the way to work at Exmouth coffee in london? Hell. Yes. We wanted to milk all the time we had left with our Liverpudlian friend before catching the train back to manchester, and even after lucha libre, we felt the need to jam in some cake. It was quite busy, with an excellent atmosphere, even for a sunday evening, we sat around the corner, on a little table, kind of hidden from everyone else, and flicked through all of the teas on offer, such a huge range, can definitely suit whatever tastes. I definitely intend to come back here and sample more of the food and some of the booze, and extend my review then!

Leaf has moved, take note! I discovered when I dragged my mate, who isn't even a fan of teas other than Tetley through the streets of Liverpool, only to realise on arrival, that the tea shop has relocated from its way out location in a converted warehouse on Parliament Street to its new prime spot on Bold Street. Only one street away from where we had originally started out on our trek for tea incidentally. But once we eventually made it inside it was totally worth the trauma to find it. Its a much bigger venue now, with small seats by the window, long tables down the middle and even a small nook tucked to one side with massive chairs to snuggle up in, something for everyone really. The drinks menu obviously focuses on loose leaf teas, but there is also a selection of coffees, soft drinks, draught and bottled beer and wine. My mate initially tried to order a latte with a shot of some sort of syrup in, resisting the urge to try a tea, but here at Leaf, they do the standard Coffees, Americano's, etc and that is all, they couldn't make her a low fat, foam, soy, shot of vanilla blah blah blah, leave that to the generic coffee house down the street I guess, 'our speciality is teas here' the lovely girl behind the bar informed her. I was so happy! So we sat down with our list of loose leaf teas and whilst I couldn't decide between at least 8 different teas on the menu, my mate struggled to pick just one. Cherry Blossom, Blood Orange, Bohea Lapsang, Organic Silver Needle, Jasmine Chun Hao, even flowering teas like Flowering Asmanthus, I went for an Organic Gunpowder Supreme and my mate ordered Morrocan Mint. But then my mate tasted her tea and suddenly became a convert, she loved it and took another look at the menu and started to decide which one she would be trying next on her return visit, it was that quick. See, leaf isn't just a tea shop, they also have a great menu serving breakfast from 9-12 week days and all day at the weekends, including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options, main meals including soups, salads, scouse (of course) and chili's are among some of dishes are on offer from 12-9pm daily. But there is more . . . open until midnight Sunday until Thursday and open till 2am Friday and Saturday, there is an open mic night every Tuesday, live bands and DJ's at the weekend too. So you could seamlessly move from a pot of Lady Grey and a good book late afternoon, to a bottle of house red and some live music come the evening. But there is more . . . they have a craft club, where you can every month craft experts come to give lessons in knitting, beadwork, making keyrings etc, while a DJ spins tunes in the background. They also put on art and craft sales for local designers, sometimes on a Saturday they have a fashion swap and on the last Sunday of every month, there is Retro Sundays, a vintage and retro fashion and homewares fair. A case of doing too much but nothing too well, doesn't seem to be the case, primarily its a tea bar, people initially come here for a good old cup of tea and you get that, and like its says on the wall 'Where there is tea, there is hope' and a place in Liverpool I shall be returning to time and time again.

    Full English
    Elena E.

My husband and I dined in on a Sunday for brunch. It was quite busy but we were able to get a table promptly upon walking in (although additional seating did appear to be scarce). I went for the Full English, as I'd never had a traditional English breakfast before, and my husband ordered the Leaf Breakfast Sandwich and Huevos Rotos. My Full English included bacon, sausage, black pudding (made from animal blood), two poached eggs (I chose this over scrambled or fried options), potato croquet, a (roasted?) mushroom, a roasted tomato, baked beans, and a slice of granary (wheat or whole grain?) toast; I was glad I chose to try something different (we are from the U.S.) and overall enjoyed my meal. My husband liked his breakfast sandwich, but it was quite plain (literally just the bread and meat), so I could sense he felt a bit disappointed with it. He much more liked his Huevos Rotos (potatoes with paprika, peppers, and poached egg). The prices were reasonable (my dish cost £7.99 and my husband's dishes exactly £8 together). I also ordered a latte (£2.35 or £2.65) and my husband ordered an Americano (£2.25 or £2.45); I believe the pricing depends on size. We each thought our selection was good (mine had beautiful latte art on top). As far as the look and feel of the restaurant, the atmosphere was open and chic. There appeared to be a prominently younger crowd there on the day we went (seemingly aged 20's and 30's). Note: There isn't a server who comes to take your order; when you're ready, you need to go up to the bar area to place your order and pay.

    Christopher S.

Hip cafe with a nice and friendly vibe. Grab a menu, find a table and order at the bar. Nothing super special but I'd come back for the atmosphere. Service was good and our waitress had an American accent. Was that intentional? The Food: - Full English with poached eggs. Big portions. - Eggs Benedict with bacon (they were out of the shredded ham). Classic but not as much food as I expected. Drinks: - Cafe Au lait (they call it a flat white) - Latte - Water was mega cucumbery.

At the 'other end' of the street, it felt like a long walk to get there (especially with a growing hunger after a few drinks the night before) but as soon as we found it we knew we'd made the right choice. The location almost feels like a cul-de-sac, with a dog grooming salon next door and plenty of prams being pushed past. This meant it was a more relaxed vibe than elsewhere, and we easily got a table for two in the sunny window. There is a mezzanine level also, but no table service, which is worth considering if you or someone in your party struggles with stairs. The menu is on a blackboard, with changing specials, and plenty of proper coffee and tea on offer. Orders are taken at the small bar and processed in the same spot, meaning service isn't the quickest, but we were in no rush and everything was done with a smile. I went simple with a cheese and ham croissant, served warm, and a cup of tea. Josh's sandwich was much more substantial and it's fair to say I had food envy; mixed beans, peppers and aubergine on fresh wholemeal bread. Needless to say, with this delicious food and sunny window spot, we didn't really want to move! In no rush, we also shared a chocolate chip shortbread as we finished our drinks. From what we learned, Moose is a small chain around the UK, and known for its hearty North American-inspired menu. Definitely true - the menu had plenty of US classics like benedicts, pancakes, waffles, and hash dishes. I was actually surprised by how many things were available, as the cafe itself wasn't all that big. Small enough even that we couldn't even get a seat inside! No problem at all though, as we were instead able to sit in their outside area which lined a cute cobblestone alley, adjacent to some shops. I've said it before, and I'll say it again for the typical American traveler... in England, do NOT expect service to be what you're used to. You'll certainly wait to be tended too, and the visits from a server are very limited. In no way do I mean this as a complaint, it's actually kind of nice to not feel rushed and practice patience :) All in all, the staff who did take care of us were very sweet! My husband had an americano and I enjoyed my flat white (I swear I've loved every coffee I've ever had during England trips). For food I got the lula puebla, which was a fancy avo toast. The smashed avocado was fresh and well-seasoned, and the toasted sourdough it was smeared across was so thick and delicious. Even more delicious was the chipotle chilli jam that came atop of it. It also had feta, chilli flakes, and two poached eggs. I was definitely a fan! My husband also really liked his eggs benedict that included griddled Serrano ham. This amount of floor space costs money in the 'up and coming' Bold Street area and so you need to turn over a massive chunk of coffee to achieve that every day and seven days a week. There seem to be two very nice, customer focused guys running it. The coffee is class ... very enjoyable, but no better than other top line 'third wave' places. I prefer it to the two cups I had at nearby Bold Street Coffee. So back to the space: there seems to be five areas. One faces you as you enter, a second to your left occupied by a huge and very cool industrial style table, a third just through and past is smaller and occupies by a small group of people meeting about whatever. Then there's a little through room I didn't venture into. Finally the bar area is large and well equipped. There's some work on presentation needed. Some cakes are at the back so you can't see them and what you don't see you don't buy (but I do anyway - a delicious vanilla cheesecake!) It feels more like a work hub, but doesn't seem to sell itself as that. For example, essential plug sockets are around the wall but away from tables and hence trip hazards. This kind of detail needs addressing. It's the kind of space that Bold St Coffee and Leaf don't seem to fill as well, but both are packed! Throughout, I had friendly service I enjoyed the space. WIFI was fine. It felt more like an evening venue and lacked some intimacy during the mid day time I was there. I'm not sure if they do food, but if they do I didn't notice. They need to as it drives profit more than cakes and drinks. They have the space. They may not have the money. I wish them well. It was the best coffee I had in the city.

We're only visiting Liverpool for a couple of days and really glad we found it. They only serve Casino Mocca coffee from Budapest so it is on the pricey side but definetly worth it as there isn't much competition in that area. Only two coffes on the menu which is a but slim for your usual speciality but we had both as a filter - They only had one chemex so had to wait for the second one but we were sharing so it was fine. Really nice, well sourced coffee very flavourful and skillfully brewed. It's definetly worth a visit but I reakon it might be a bit slow at busy periods. Perfect for a lazy coffee and ideal for our holiday. Definetly recommend!

Thinking I had found a new coffee shop - albeit a very small one - what I discovered was that this is a new Cabaret club opened by Liverpool's very own Ricky Tomlinson. However, be warned this is not the type of cabaret I was hoping for with burlesque strippers, freakshow entertainment and plenty of spirits on offer, Mr Tomlinson has opened a proper old fashioned British variety club hosted by himself every week and presenting acts as legendary as Jimmy Cricket and Cannon & Ball! This was more surprising because the Green Room cafe itself couldn't feel more modern and even quite cool with an eclectic mix of music from Johhny Cash to Elvis Costello and Kings of Leon complimented by the iconic black & white images of movie stars and singers along the walls. While it is clean, bright and spacious after a while I did start to feel like I was sipping my coffee in a furniture showroom.

Manageress was nice when I complained but to be totally honest he ruined our evening that we spent quite a lot of money on. Will not be returning to the Green Rooms, Ever. Felt so insulted and upset by this horrible man.

Nice and clean outside and outdoor seating for this lovely weather we had today, walking into the cafe we where greeted with a smile from the server, lots of seating to choose from we choose to sit inside though, my friend ordered a late and i ordered a cappachino, the server brought it over to us and wow!! I am not a coffee drinker but this was a tasty cappachino! Went down very easy, nice and smooth and just the amount of froth! I ordered a bacon sandwich which was average the bacon was slightly fatty and the tomato sauce tasted very processed. I would defiantly return here for coffee! Have preciously been here for a full English which was nice but a bit too pricey to return for another. I give this a good three stars!

Sometimes, admittedly, there are times you know will be an unfair reflection on a place - like say to review a bar with a bouncing reputation from a time you turned up at 11am on a Monday when the smell of vomit and disinfectant still hangs in the air on the street outside or the time the entire staff of a clothes shop were giving you evils as you stepped out of the changing rooms because it was 17:55 - but think well that was my experience and go ahead and write it anyway. There is nothing wrong with Hemingways, but it is a fairly standard cafe with few discernible features and maybe with the new shiny Neros and Starbucks of Liverpool1 on its doorstep that's enough to lose it amidst the rapidly changing landscape of that side of town. The staff are very friendly and there is a good selection of sandwiches plus with the availability of some wines and beers it's perfect for grabbing a swifty with lunch - you can't do that at your nearest well known chain of coffee shops.
