If you're looking to escape from branded, sometimes pretentious cafes on your trip to Liverpool, Maggy May's is the place to head. Situated halfway up Bold Street, Maggy's is a proper 'scouse' cafe, from its own brand tinned 'Scouse' to full English breakfast at great prices! When living in Liverpool as a student, Maggy's was a frequent haunt for me and my housemates to get some good solid food to soak up our hangovers. Their take on the famous Liverpool stew known as 'Scouse' is delicious, as are their old favourites such as 'sausage butty's' and 'scrambled egg on toast'. This Cafe is very popular with the locals and is always filled to the rafters over lunchtimes, being this busy constantly bodes well, and reflects the quality of their food and service. Whenever we ate here, the food was great and the service was always quick and efficient.

Bold Street just seems to be full of oldy worldy, upmarket greasy spoon type places and I just love it. Although I must say that I do partake in a little latte drinking from Costa time to time - and I do have a latte machine with Costa's coffee at home!- I do miss just your typical friendly local caff. The menu is great with good ol' cooked English breakfasts and Scouse - what more could you want? It also seems a bit like it's been cooked by your nan. Very quaint. The prices are really cheap and the service is second to none.

Maggie Mays is simple, honest and really hits the spot if your after a good old English Breakfast. The place is simple within and feels light and comfortable with some potted plants dotted around all of which make you feel very much at ease when settling down for a tasty treat. They provide all sorts of traditional treats within even such things as an English tea cake which is not something as widely available as you would think. Thats the beauty of Maggie Mays there is no sense of this place trying to be anything other than a simple English Cafe which you can visit for a hearty meal and relaxing cuppa. To summarise I have only compliments for Maggie Mays I just hope that they continue to keep it simple and do not bow to the pressure of chain establishments to become something they are not.

We had a day out to Liverpool & wanted to try some proper Scouse & heard the best you can get is at Maggie Mays. It did NOT disappoint! Beautiful dish! I could eat it all over again now I'm home!

Rushing into the Maggie May in a rainy Friday, only an old couple were sitting over there. Full of old photos and newspapers of Liverpool are on the wall and upon the tables. We ordered a classic scouse which recommended by BBC documentary and a steak with chips. I have to say, the scouse is interesting but tasteless and the steak is not good at all. I know that this old local style would not be fancied by young people but the classic restaurant need to find a new way to back in good day. 3 points for food while 5 points for environment, a classic and historic place for visitors!

Even more temptations in the other side of the menu.

Upon asking a friend, a native Liverpoolian, where I should try some scouse, she immediately recommended Maggie Mays.

There are quite a few pubs in Liverpool named The Beehive but my favourite has to be this place…read moremainly because of its excellent location right at the heart of Liverpool and in close proximity to Liverpool One. This place is a typical old man's pub if you will and this is no bad thing as they no how to pour a good pint and provide a warm and relaxing atmosphere. At most times of day this place has a good crowd of drinkers inside all of whom seem to be friendly and welcoming. The staff are welcoming also and really make sure that you feel welcome as a valued customer. There is food available here and it is worth a try it is mainly home cooked dishes which really hit the spot when you are in need of a good eat. The prices are excellent for such a central pub and as such this place is a winner every time.

Nestled in the midst of commercial paradise, The Beehive flouts the new buildings surrounding it,…read moreholding on tightly to the traditionalism it appears to represent. In fact, at this particular time, there is a large and colourful dragon painted on the windows, in anticipation of St George's Day. Even though, as a city, we tend to get more excited about Paddy's Day, it's nice to see that some establishments haven't forgotten what country they're in. Last time I was in here I was accompanied by Red Watch of the local Fire Station (don't ask) and we were all squashed into the area directly in front of the bar. As it was the week before Christmas, it was understandably busy, but thanks to the company I was keeping, I never had to battle over to the bar to get a round in. Nice chaps, firemen... Anyway, this is your typical pub that is full of all walks of life from Liverpool. Not quite at the same level as the karaoke pubs like Cooper's, it still retains all the character of an old man's pub. Patrons are friendly and chatty, and you don't feel guilty for listening in on a conversation and laughing along with a joke. There's a convenient smoker's area at the front, and as the pub isn't that large, people tend to spill out to the front if the weather is nice enough. Not a massive range of beers and ales, but enough to keep everyone happy.
