Tabac is a long standing feature in the Liverpool cafe/bar scene and for a while it seemed to get a bit complacent with itself. I often found service was slow, the beer on draught was often rank and the atmosphere past 6 o'clock was a bit stale. Now, however, Tabac has had a bit of a kick up the backside and is back in the game. It has a very continental feel to it, which is reflected in it very cool decor of 60s French film flyers and photos of Parisien streets and coffee shops, as the feel to the place is very laid back and it is time for a beer or a coffee at day or night. The food is consistently good with a good breakfast selection, a variety of sandwiches and salads, the ubiquitous taps selection and daily specials of rustic main meals like stews and tagines. With its bread and butter being the afternoon coffee and lunch trade, little seemed to be going on at night in Tabac for a while but when I recently popped in one recent Friday night I was pleasantly surprised to find the place full with drinkers, DJs playing a good party atmopshere in full flow. Seems like Tabac has got its second wind.

It was a sweet corner cafe, well-decorated environment and good burger! Cocktail drinks are innovatively named, I had a drink called.. "Aint nothing but a G-Ting" which is a gin tonic. I wish it is slightly stronger, but yea the names are interesting and appealing. There are indoor areas where big groups gatherings can be made available. Wifi is also available, but the _guest one can be kinda slow, oh and there are socket available for charging your electronic devices, located just below the seats.

Owned by the same woman who has Bumper, Baa Bar and Modo, this is different again from all the others. Fashioning itself as a retro, funky cafe-slash-bistro, this is also popular in the evening as a bar, as I found out from my little brother last week. Serving decent food in the daytime, it is more of a drink than eat place I think. Whenever I go in and ask what the soup of the day is, they never seem to know, and waiter service can be slow if there are more than 3 tables in. But it doesn't really seem designed for a proper sit down meal anyway - that just isn't the feel of this place. There's free wifi so you can usually find an array of people busily hacking away at their laptops here, and the music is subtle and unobtrusive, making it a favourite place for friends of mine to catch up on their work. It has potential to be a bit more than what it is at the moment, but it seems to be doing well so who am I to interfere?!

A very good wine bar nonetheless, and pleasant enough when it's not too busy, Schmooze was one of the first upmarket places to spring up in the area. Now somewhere to be seen, it started off being a very cool but laid back place where students wouldn't feel awkward going into. Now I doubt you would find a pair of jeans in there, unless they were designer ones moulded on to the body of one of these tight t shirt-wearing troglodytes who skulks about these places. Don't get me wrong, it is no reflection of the place itself, it just seems to attract these wannabes. As I said, it is a very accomplished wine bar and the snacky food I've had here can't be faulted. Unfortunately, the clientele here spoil the atmosphere for me a bit, although they are not as bad as some other places in Allerton. Generally, it is a nice, moderately priced place to chill out in, but I wouldn't spend more than an hour here.

Inside Schmooze doesn't disappoint, with room to move around, when it isn't busy, with an up and downstairs. I am unable to comment on the wine, but I have heard that they know their wines. In terms of the food, it was tasty - stuffed mushrooms with gruyere cheese and apple and pear pancake. Depending on how much you want to eat, Schmooze is very accommodating. You can have a main course meal as a starter or vice versa as they list every dish on the menu as either a baby or fat dish. Prices were a little more than I like to pay but I would have been disappointed had I had to eat something totally disguisting. As I hadn't I was happy to smile enjoy the food.

The place itself is bland as hell, nothing interesting or inspiring about the look of the place and this is probably because it doesn't really know what it wants to be. A bistro with tapas? Tapas just seems to be the default setting of any restaurant keen to make a quick buck. The thing that got me however was the service. It was slow, the bartender/waiter was in no rush to put my order through - he apologised later but I think he completely forgot to tell the chef!

Its claim to be a wine bar AND bistro though is something that has never sat well with me. As a restaurant, it is very successful, and boasts breakfast, lunch and evening menus in addition to a tapas menu. The food is lovely and reasonably priced, and the service is good - everything you'd expect from a small restaurant. However, on a busy night, Mello occasionally falls a little short. Staff are torn between serving behind the bar or serving the food, and if there are large parties eating in the 'bistro area' and drinking in the bar area, it can become crowded and sometimes uncomfortable, with the local drunk perving down the top of the local Tesco's manager who's trying to enjoy a staff party. All this aside, it is a pleasant venue, with varied music, patrons and food. Somewhere to go for a quiet lunch or mid-afternoon snack, or a good old knees-up and spy-on-the-locals type night!

Here is the place you come not only to sup the delicious nectar, but also learn all about it. Yes, it's a venue of education as well as fun. The best combination for Monica-esque nerds like myself. You'll be taught a lot but it won't be in a pretentious or patronising way; rather a way that feels useful as well as interesting. The wine is obviously the star of the show, but what would a star be without a supporting cast? Nibbles are just as tasty, with some great board appetisers for groups such as cheese, meat, breads, deli snacks, olives, tomatoes, the works - everything you could think of to perfectly complement a lovely glass. But if there's a person in your party that isn't too keen on the humble grape, the range of unusual beers could be just the thing to tempt them. The wine tasting sessions are legendary, the music is just right, the staff are friendly and informative and it's a great place to bring a group of friends, business clients or even a romantic partner as the atmosphere can suit both a fun, giggly outing or an intimate date. It also doubles up as a wine cellar so you can purchase some tasty gifts to take home. Now these are the kinds of souvenirs that I can get on board with.

After having so much fun they wanted to bring something similar to Liverpool. Aw how thoughtful! Moderately priced wines and they have a take out price which I like. Well Vinea have catered for this and have teamed up with The Yellow Boat Cruise to offer a 40 minute voyage taking in the sights of Liverpool's South Docks, followed by a relaxing three glass wine tasting at Vinea - tickets £10 - available everyday until 6pm.
