It is a DT location, open until 10 pm daily, which means if you're in a car, or hoping to visit later on in the evening, it does have those benefits which the Starbucks at Marketplace in the town centre does not. The interior was pretty modern and comfortable, they had a nice amount of seating, I do think the tables and seating area could have been cleaner; the tables were not cleaned in the hour or so I was there, and were notably dirty before I had arrived, meaning I had to wipe the table down myself. I'd totally understand if they were short-staffed, but they had multiple baristas who seemed to be standing around and not doing anything, so surely they could have tidied up? Service was a little slow, again there seemed to be staff members not doing anything when they easily could have been helping the queue move quicker or move drinks, the baristas did seem friendly enough, however. My Venti Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte came to £4.80, just under 5% extra compared to a standard corporate-owned store, they do accept Starbucks Rewards here so if you have a free drink you get more bang for your buck compared to most other stores. My drink was fine, they did put in slightly too much of the pumpkin syrup, but it wasn't too noticeable, and it was much better than having too little syrup which other stores sometimes seem to do. 3* - A-OK, not a bad Starbucks store, although cleanliness/pricing remain unsatisfactory.

My son accidentally broke a money box, which was at a three year old's height. No signs were up to say that items needed paying for if accidentally broken. I spoke to the owner saying that he had broken something and that it was close to the edge when it fell off. I was very apologetic about the matter and honest. However the owner ( a man) was aggressive and said that I needed to pay the full retail cost for the item before leaving. As he was so intimating and overpowering saying that I couldn't leave without paying the full retail price and wouldn't accept the cost price (which is against consumer law). I was so scared and upset by this, and had to pay nearly £40 for an afternoon tea for one adult and two children. A really wouldn't buy or go to this cafe again.

It is just a shame everything wasn't top notch. Muffin Break is on the ground floor of the Grand Arcade shopping centre in Wigan, right next to the lift. The cafe is quite a strange shape, with some seats in the brighter part next to the till and others being down in the store, where the decor is much different and slightly darker. I ordered a Cinnamon Latte and they also had Gluten Free Strawberry and Banana muffins, I ordered a Strawberry one, the muffin tasted quite nice for gluten free, although not the best muffin I had it wasn't the worst either and was terrific value considering the price of gluten free cakes out and about and was £2. My Cinnamon latte was satisfactory, although it was nothing special and no where near as good as the one I later got from Starbucks, which is a short walk away from this store. My table was dirty when I got sat down, I was annoyed to see this as it had little crumbds of gluten, which would of made me very ill if it would of come into contact with my food and coffee, so I had to ask a member of staff to clean it, she had no problem doing it, but they should be a server always cleaning tables when they become vacant. The tables were not very big, the tables are mainly to seat 2 people but honestly they would barely be enough room for 1 person to have coffee and cake. As I enjoyed my Strawberry muffin, I made a risk and decided to get a banana one on my way home, the risk was they could sell out as I would be visiting near closing time and I was dissapointed to find they had all sold out, the staff didn't seem too appolegetic about this and the barista actually semmed like she was going to laugh. The barista resisted my negotiations of a discount. This is a large store, with normally a large queue and the numerous seats being close to full. This store has free wifi, but as I was sat very far away from the entrance, I could not even pick it up, which adds to a disappointing wifi signal of which is really intermittent in central Wigan. I asked the man if I could use my loyalty card, and indeed he let me and I did, I had 95p on my loyalty card and I wanted to use that on my transaction but he told me, it had to cover the whole item which I know from past experience and the Costa website isn't true. It is hard to review a place where you only went in for pre-packaged food which wasn't made on site, a flying visit like this one but it looked like a nice store as you come in from the Crompton Street car park. It certainly isn't the best cofee shop in this shopping centre and on the streets just outside, I much prefer Starbucks and Caffe Nero to Costa and would rather visit smaller businesses like Muffin Break, rather than the UK giant as they have better cofee, a wide array of gluten free muffins and they are a smaller giant, with under 50 stores, I am sure Costa has this many in Greater Manchester. It also sells craft goods, and has a few nice little details such as a row of coat hooks so you have somewhere proper to put your coats and hats etc. The specials board was plentiful and I'll definitely be eying that up next time, especially given the quality and value... Its exposed brickwork and chunky wood furnishings work well with the tall ceilings, and a huge mirror on one end to give the illusion of more space in what is already a spacious venue. The service is friendly and professional, and it's nice that I had the option of a few different teas, as many coffee shops simply offer "tea" as well as the coffees. The coffees available sit on a big set of shelves in large kilner jars, and a chiller by the main counter shows the sandwiches and snacks available, as well as a cake stand on the counter to tempt you! Good value, and they have a loyalty card too. I'll definitely be back.
