The restaurant features freshly made dishes made with homegrown seasonal produce. While visiting our family in Liverpool, we came here as a group for afternoon tea. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law had been here before, so they knew it was great and brought us back, along with my husband's grandparents. Do take note, you have to book your table in advance. We sat in one of the backrooms which was very cozy and inviting, albeit a bit noisy from a rowdy group of "ladies who lunch," but it was fine once they left. We all really appreciated that savory items were included in the the afternoon tea. The menu features a selection of sandwiches, savouries, a cup of soup, a bucket of chips, a selection of cakes and a mini trifle. Plus your choice of a pot of tea or cup of filter coffee. I was happily surprised at the wide variety of teas! There was ample to eat. My husband and I ate our entire afternoon tea, but everyone else in our group had a few sweet treats left to take home. The food was very delicious. I loved the little quiche best along with the soup served in a cute tea cup and saucer! Plus, the little basket of chips was a nice touch! Scrumptious! Also, it's just 14 pounds for Afternoon Tea which I think it a great value for such a delicious savory tea. Afterwards, my family browsed the farm store and boutique which featured a lot of cute country style home goods and seasonal produce and artisanal food items. The food is locally sourced, good value, and delicious! They have a nice variety of teas too, and daily cakes which are made on the premises, from cheesecake to huge delicious scones, it's the sort of place you could pop in for a big breakfast, or a slice of cake and a coffee. The parking is street parking. But it's within walking distance of various parking areas, due to being in the centre of Horwich. On this particular visit, I had 2 slices of "doorstop toast" and a pot of tea, Phil R had sausage on toast (local butchers sausage) and a bottle of Fentimans Dandelion and Burdock. We ordered a pot of tea to share. The pot came with a crocheted pot holder with a sunflower on top. So cute!!! A pot gave us about 4-5 cups of tea. We both decided to order the 8 items off the breakfast menu (until 2pm), which consisted of a hash brown, egg, sausage, bacon, beans, black pudding, mushrooms, and tomatoes. You can also choose to order 5 of the 8 items instead, but we wanted a Full English breakfast. We got there a little after 2pm but because the grill was still on, they were nice enough to allow us to order breakfast. Everything was delicious and made just right!!! All the flavors blended together did not overwhelm the dish either. The hash brown was one of the best I've ever eaten. The black pudding was somewhat crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I've had black pudding before that was overcooked than it should have been and was hard inside and out so this was different. We wanted to try the sticky ginger cake and scones but were so full at the end, we could not!!! We did come back at the end of our trip to try the cake and scones, as well as to have another Full English breakfast of course!! The Full English breakfast was consistent and still one of the best I've had!!! They warmed our sticky ginger cake, which made it warm and moist but possibly less sticky. No problem there!!! Every bit still delicious and flavorful!! Just the perfect amount of spice! We loved it!!! However, this piece of cake does get sickening the more you eat. The scone was huge! Sliced in the middle with cream and jam, it is a sure win next to my favorite at the Rivington Barn (though to be honest, I've not eaten many scones). I would definitely come back whenever I'm in Horwich!!! It is not expensive either, which is a plus!! Both times, it costs less than £17.

I don't know the area well, but it seems there's some good choices. The one that stood out for me, and was closest and open, was Caffè Rosso on Wigan Lane. From the outside, Rosso is unassuming, but the first thing I notice is that at this point of the morning it can't have been open long, but there were already people dining in the outside seating, and two tables occupied inside. The inside of Rosso is modern with retro and vintage touches, but as well as being clean and pleasantly decorated and furnished, it feels welcoming. The details around the room such as newspapers and magazines for customers to read are nice, but its small details like free wifi, and books on things like trips around the British Isles that make you realise that not only are you welcome, but if you want to stay a while and relax, you're welcome to. When I mentioned to one of the owners that I liked the feel of the place and the décor, he thanked me and said that it was a carbon copy of their living room at home, but without the television. I think I can believe that, because it's very welcoming and comfortable. Upon reading the breakfast menu (a specific "good morning!" menu, which I like the idea of), and the main "welcome" menu on the table, the two words I would use to describe Rosso are "provenance" and "passion". The details given in the guide exude pride at listing where their foods and ingredients are sourced, their views on ethics and quality, and emphasising the home-made elements, and the awards they have earned. I like this. If you have something of quality and you know it, then by all means, shout it from the rooftops! As it was morning, I opted for some granary toast with marmalade and a pot of tea. I liked that I was able to ask for decaf tea, skimmed milk, and sweetener, without it being an issue that it can often be at small establishments like this. Sounds healthy doesn't it? Only thing is, I had my eye on a particularly nice looking slab of Belgian chocolate tiffin in a cake cabinet on the main counter next to an equally delicious looking key lime pie. Well it'd be rude not to, wouldn't it? I ordered with one of the owners at the counter. He was friendly, welcoming, and professional. The tea was perfect as to be expected, but the tiffin was really excellent! Rich and chocolatey, it was the perfect little treat, and knowing it was home-made was another nice touch. I'd be tempted to come back just for this little beast, but in seeing that they also do Afternoon Teas, I'm sure I could be persuaded to return a few times... just for research purposes of course! As it stands, I wasn't expecting to find anything amazing early on a Monday morning in Wigan, but I found a real gem. I must explore Wigan more! It feels modern and the decor is very pleasant. There's an extensive menu including a wide range of pasta, chicken and pizza dishes, many of which sounded appetising -- it was hard to choose what to have! The starters are very big, so be warned -- you might only want to order one between two. The food was excellent. I had a rare steak which was cooked to perfection. The service was discreet and attentive and the bill was slightly smaller than I expected -- although we still clocked up £20 per head (including drinks but excluding sweets). The place seems to be very popular -- it's often full to bursting, apparently, although in fairness the place is not big -- and I would certainly go again.

The restaurant area is on a first floor mezzanine level, looking down over parts of the food hall like a minstrels gallery. It's decorated in bright and fresh neutral colours, grounded by a natural wooden floor. Light cascades in through sash windows on two walls. Glimpses through cut-outs in the walls show further seating areas, for use in the full restaurant of an evening. I took a menu from the bar and had a read. The breakfast offerings look good, but as I read the menu I realise that the rest of the menu looks superb too! Steak nights, grill nights, Afternoon Teas and all sorts of other tempting things. I already decide before ordering that I must come again to the "proper" restaurant in an evening. I decided to order sourdough toast with whipped butter and marmalade, and a pot of Birchall's English Breakfast Tea, and was told to take a seat anywhere I like and it'd be brought over. I chose to sit by one of the sash windows and look down out over Market Street. Even seated I can see the fine quality finish on everything in this venue; the restaurant is the same quality and fit as the downstairs foodhall, meaning everything is spotless, modern, and pleasant. The staff upstairs seem to be as friendly and helpful as the staff downstairs too. It all feels very professional, whilst still very friendly. I observe other visitors who join after me, a mother and her children enjoying breakfast, some ladies-who-lunch ordering eggs benedict, and two young girls ordering soft drinks. It's nice to see that there's a mix of customers. My breakfast arrives, beautifully presented, but to be honest I wouldn't have expected any less from Provenance from what I've seen. The Fairtrade tea is delicious, and the sourdough toast has a superb crunch to it, the butter and marmalade both being of good quality, meaning you feel a bit spoilt for your breakfast, which can never be a bad thing. It was a very tasty breakfast, and cost less than four quid. Brilliant. Great place, and I can see that the quality and service are priority here, so I look forward to returning to try the evening menu sometime, and was already advised by another staff member to book in advance due to popularity!
