Cafe 53 is a no frills sort of cafe, plain and simple good food which has unfortunately been overrun by coffee shops such as Starbucks. The cafe is full of locals droppping in for a bite to eat or a quick cuppa in the middle of their shopping down funky Bold Street. The atmosphere is friendly, and the place is so kitch that you almost get a shock when you head back out to the hustle and bustle of Bold Street. The staff are great and will always spend a little time chatting with you no matter how busy they are. The food is a good price and yummy. I recommend the English Breakfast and a coffee. The portions are a great size, none of this michelin star - 2 peas and a sprout kind of rubbish. You feel like you're stopping off at a friend's parents or something, it has a mothering air about it. read more

It would be very easy, too easy, to start this review with the phrase 'where did the other 52 cafes go' but I won't. I will manfully resist from ever typing out those words. But on to the review. This little place on Bold Street serves food worthy of your grandma's larder; a well put-together full English breakfast, moist sponge cake and tea so strong it threatens to shatter the mug. Cafe 53 is the perfect antidote to all the chain coffee houses with their indentikit paninis, muffins and tall skinny foam-topped lattes. You can always be sure of a warm welcome and a genuinely friendly staff. Cafe 53 is a good stop-off at Bold Street for some decent intake of classic types of dishes, the majority being English and Italian. The decoration of the cafe is plain and simple: that's really all you need, and not all this modern fancy show-off appearance of many restaurants these days. I like the fact that there is a calm atmosphere, not frantic and that staff are always approachable and patient. It is the sort of place you would come with friends and parents. No frills here and it has a family mood about the place. All dishes are affordable and value for money. You can't really go wrong with whatever you order. read more

Cafe 53 is one of the many places I have been for a hangover cure. When a friend recommended that we go to Cafe 53 I realised that I have known it was there for a long time but never been in for some reason. The interior is clean and tidy but a little outdated. The table we were shown to was in a little booth, it was a bit 80's style but comfy enough. We opted for the all day breakfast and sat back to wait for our food. The cafe was quite busy at the time so we expected a bit of a wait, which is what we had. When the food finally arrived it was placed on our table and the waitress walked away without so much as an "Enjoy your meal". The breakfast was OK. I've had much better elsewhere but I've also had much worse. Everything was cooked properly and it was tasty but there was nothing that really stuck in my mind about it afterwards, except that I felt better and was no longer hungry. I haven't been back since as I know of better places on the same road, but I wouldn't avoid it completely in the future if I fancied going elsewhere for a change. read more

We have been twice now and both times have been different experiences. The first time we went was for breakfast with a toddler. Friendly staff greeted us and supplied us with a big table and high chair. We were provided with child options on the menu too. Myself and my partner had the full English of course and it was your typical breakfast. Satisfying and filled us up at a reasonable price. The second visit was for a quick lunch so we didnt opt for the breakfast menu. We had a chicken omellete and my partner had a chicken curry. Dissapointed with both meals, bland and watery. I know this wont be the first review to make something out of the age factor at play in Cafe 53 but there is little wrong with this place and it even feels very homely - nursing homely that is! The staff are friendly old dears who make a fuss of you as you come in but you can tell they have been doing this a while and have become sticklers for regime - almost telling me off for approaching the counter before I had sat down! They are pros and I realised that they use the old nan trick on everyone who entered. Oh yes they know what they're doing but I was on to them. Of course by the time I did so I had ordered and felt like I got my just desserts for believing their charming old lady trick when a very average 'cumberland' breakfast was served to me. I saw nothing traditional or 'cumberland'ish in the jumbo hot dog and frozen hash brown to warrant the £5. As I ate I felt as if all the fun was being had in the kitchen as the loud voices and radio cut through the quiet front of house parlour - at least the nursing home feel was achieved with some authenticity. read more

My first reaction as I crossed the threshold from Bold Street to Cafe 53 was 'do I need a blue rinse to enter'? It's a lovely old-fashioned cafe which is transformed into a homely and cosy caff with china tea pots and decorative plates which hang on the walls suspended in 1970, the old placemats with the felt on the bottom reminded me somewhat of my nan's house, all that was missing were the doilies really. I took a booth, my vision submerged in the dark wood interior and forest green carpet, two chinese lucky cats waving at me from under a vase of peach carnations, and had a gander at the menu. Now the staff are great here, made me feel right at home. I had a savoury toastie; tempted by the salami, peppers, cheese and red onion-y goodness which was promised to me. Only one problem...it arrived, and there was no salami... But bacon instead. (Potato Potaato. I know.) And I'm not a food snob, but if it's on the menu then it should do what it says on the tin! But it was still tasty and I was ravenous so I let it slide. There is a range of good home cooked comforting food available (omelettes, home made pies, grills, fish and chips...all around the £6 mark). It's a good choice for a cuppa in a home away from home. read more

like a time warp, its so kitch and cute. the service is fabulous, something which is sadly a rarity now days =( .. trhe staff are friendly, polite, chaty and more then willing to help. The food is just your normal cafe type food, sandwiches etc. the prices are quite good value for money. the food is fab, hearty sized portions and hot. everything is home cooked and reminds me of something your nan would make you. the bold street location makes it perfect for a stop off whilst shopping. this is nothing fancy or nothing special just plain simple good food but this is what set its apart in a generation of coffee bars read more

I really would have given a rating of 0 out of 5 if this option was available, and yes it was that bad! I like to consider myself an optimist, but I struggled to find anything positive about my lunch taken here. The food was awful - my partner and I both ordered jacket potatoes, which were hard in places, and the cheese was a weird texture. The service was on par with the food - the staff were inattentive for quite some time, and when they eventually served us, their attitude was like they were doing us a favour. Cutlery was dirty also, lipstick left on cups, dirty fork etc. I found the food over priced considering it is a little 'greasy spoon' type cafe. When we (begrudgingly) paid, the staff practically jumped on the money and ignored us as we left! Won't be going back there again, and have warned others about it too. Honestly the worst service and food I have ever come across, and I eat out quite a bit in a range of places. read more

It is like stepping back in time. The service is superb, the staff are friendly and the customer comes first. Whether it's a quick cuppa or a leisurely lunch you will enjoy the old world charm of No 53. There are no bright lights or banging music so it's an oasis of tranquility in another wise busy shopping area so step out of the rush and enjoy the charms of this lovely cafe and its excellent fayre. read more

I just love this cafe. Its located on Bold St, Liverpool and is very quaint and quiet. The food served here is delightful and the service is top standard. I recommened there full english with cumberland sausage and there hot chocolatemmm! Its a nice place to take a break from all of that tedious shopping, and cosy on a winters day! read more

This an excellent little cafe it has excellent food, very reasonable prices The only thing that stopped me from giving 5 stars was that the very clean toilets were in the basement so not disabled friendly. We visited on a saturday lunchtime it was very busy but the service was guick and efficient. read more

Understood the 'stepping back in time' description on walking in. Has a sort basic 'diner' decor; wooden leather backed bench type seating. I ordered a milkshake n poached egg on toast. The milkshake was that cheap nesquik stuff (with cream on top out of a can) n I got 1 tiny poached egg about the size of a baby's fist on an expense of toast (with marg I think). Food seems low quality but is v cheap. Waitresses friendly but laconic in my single experience. But quite busy n full of atmosphere too. Tis what it is. read more

Great little cafe and good freshly cooked breakfast, enjoyed by our group of ladies away for a couple of nights in Liverpool.

Staff as miserable as the food. Popped in for a quick lunch - I felt I was an imposition, staff lacked basic manners - the greeting I was given was "lift your arms" as one of their alleged 'waitresses' tried the clean the table. A please or thank you wouldn't have gone amiss. The food did not improve with age - bacon was cooked hours ago. There's a new Lebanese street food café just opened across the road - go there, the staff smile, have a chat with you and the food was delicious.
