The first reason for this is its fantastic location within the dockside area, to sit here and relax with a quality cup of coffee is a relaxing and enjoyable experience no matter what time of year it is. Essentially a visit here is just a great little filler on any day out around the docks and it is a chance to relax in a wonderful ambience. The staff are great and do as much as they can to make you feel at home which includes serving up great coffee and tasty snacks such as slices of cake to go along with it. You may think you know Costa Coffee but check out this place and it may give you a whole new view.

It is a really small mall kiosk type store with seating barely enough for two people, it is mainly somewhere to grab and go before getting onto your train. I noticed the menu and price boards were much harder to see than other stores, they used electronic boards with really small writing and with the prices which even give an airport Starbucks a run for its' money you can understand why: £4.60 for my usual beverage which usually costs £3.75 (22% more) £4.79 for a gluten-free panini which usually costs £3.99 (20% more) I really don't understand why they can't be upfront and honest with customers regarding making the pricing clear as it costs much higher than any other Starbucks in the UK (even other rail locations are cheaper), in a city which is renowned for having too many overpriced, franchise stores anyway. The staff also seemed a little rude, especially when I asked them about the pricing issue and with barely any room to sit down and get the most of their extortinatr prices (or even wait for a drink at busy times), they surely can't justify this for an uncomfortable store other than it being one of the 3/4 places within the station to grab a coffee before gettting on a train, but even if this Starbucks was the only option I'd rather go to the Ranelagh Street store nearby or do without for the price of beverages, and overall comfort/service, it surely lets the Starbucks brand down. 1*

It has plenty of seating which is good because it gets very busy. I have been coming in here on and off over the last few years, specifically when I go to visit my folks and I have to say, I'm a little underwhelmed. I want it to be better than it is but it just doesn't deliver. I think that is why it's taken me so long to write a review. The service is fine but it's nothing to write home about. You sit down, take note of your table number and order at the counter. As for the food, I only ever come for breakfast. I like the builders breakfast as a choice. It's a good hearty breakfast but the quality varies from one day to the next. The black pudding often comes out like a hockey puck and the mushrooms, which I'm pretty sure are canned are nearly always cold when they get to you. They do good thick toast though which is a plus. Finally, the price is too much. For these prices you should be getting at the very least table service. I honestly think I only go here because I can walk there and I know 9/10 they will have room to sit. Perhaps next trip I'll give it a miss.

What he is doing is, I suspect, spreading the good word of coffee to tea drinkers. I went in there for a greasy breakfast, which had the Irish and English versions. These were on the menu as more of a commercial necessity. The soda bread was poor, but more ingredient were perfectly fine. That said, when there is a butcher a few doors down, it seems odd that they use "merely" better supermarket stuff (I could be wrong). The coffee was indeed very nice and well served. The different types of coffee were listed on a board next to their curry-equivalent in strength to give some idea of what people could order. It was a nice touch that would work equally well in curry houses in most of the rest of Europe. That and the offer of barrista lessons tell the story of an evangelical owner. The pastries looked rather superior to the average Starbucks nonsense. Were this really a Costa, it would get two stars. Instead, it just squeaks four.

Located on the second floor of the original Waterstones, this branch has comfy chairs, friendly staff and on a sunny day, a blanket of bright light. Even better, you can usually take books in with you to browse whilst you're sipping your flat white. The icing on the cake, is that unless it's a weekend the cafe is usually quite quiet and peaceful too. Perhaps that's why the staff always seem upbeat... I'd give it 4 stars for ambience but I'm afraid the bitterness of the damn coffee takes it down to 3!

My study partner seemed to enjoy his latte quite a bit, though, and he is a pickier eater than a three year old. After climbing up three flights of stairs to get to the Costa nestled within Waterstones, I bought some coffee and plonked down in the back corner. I had a few books of my own that day and was hoping to do studying as it was late afternoon and other coffee shops nearby were closing or filled with too many people to get any work done. Granted, the books were from another store and all I bought was a filter coffee, but the dirty looks I received from staff as I sat there for an hour or so reading and writing was off putting; I kept thinking I was breaking some unwritten rule somewhere. Well, I should be a bit more honest- the dirty looks I received from ONE staff member. The teenage cashier was really friendly and topped up some hot water I wanted for tea later on while asking what I was reading about. She kept trying to get me to buy pastries (tempting!) but I managed to be good. Other than the glares I received from the one man wiping down tables, I enjoyed sitting in the back corner of Costa. Many of the chairs are plush and comfy, the tables don't wobble, and book stores always provides that great feeling of "I'm learning!" while you're reading within them and sipping coffee. Since my experiences here in the past were a bit more mellow, I'm hoping this was a one off deal. I look forward to more afternoons perched on one of Costa's chairs reading and trying not to buy every pastry on display.

As with most of the sandwich companies in Liverpool the staff here are very down to earth and extremely friendly meaning that as well as your food you often get a nice chat here also. The actual range of food here is nothing exceptional but it certainly competes with its many rivals who are dispersed around the city. This company also caters for parties and functions and are good for simple party buffet food. To summarise another very down to earth and unpretentious sandwich shop within Liverpool, let's hope they keep up the good work.

How about a Panini or ciabatta melt? It's all here. The only scruples are the fact that it does tend to be somewhat overpriced, and their fickle pricing system doesn't seem to help matters. I mentioned that I'd been there to a Liverpudlian friend who said, 'Yep, bet if you had that again you'd pay something different for it.' It apparently depends on who's working at the time or how generous they are with the ingredients. Strange, non? Also if you're on foot it's fine and dandy but if you're in transit with a car you won't find parking nearby, the area's emblazoned with double yellows. Never mind, though, because they have CAKE! Yes, homemade and fresh cakes and biscuits which are all exceptionally bad for you and even more exceptionally lovely. If you can get past the few cons this really is a good little sandwich spot for a tasty bit of lunch.
