It is perhaps this pleasant location that blesses the pub with none of the usual cancerous facets that drag the franchise into the muck. I'm not praising it, by the way. It's bland as hell. Think of every 'It-Was-OK-I-Suppose' pub you've ever visited in your life and this is what their offspring would look like. It's quite clean. There's a fruit machine. Football is on. It's the most inoffensive place I've ever visited. Maybe if I'd waited until Saturday night I'd've been treated to a nice brawl. Alas, I've got to scrap a review together from somewhere that clogs my arteries with apathy. Woe is me.

I have rarely been here when it has not been very busy as it is obviously a popular place with a lot of locals, but not with me. Like with many other Yates's I find this place a bit bland. It has nothing that stands out or makes it interesting. It is decorated the same as other Yates's and has nothing that catches your eye. The atmosphere here is OK, but it can feel a bit cramped and uncomfortable when it is a busy. The bar is well stocked and the staff are friendly and helpful, but that's the best I can say about the place. In my opinion, don't bother.

The place itself is bland as hell, nothing interesting or inspiring about the look of the place and this is probably because it doesn't really know what it wants to be. A bistro with tapas? Tapas just seems to be the default setting of any restaurant keen to make a quick buck. The thing that got me however was the service. It was slow, the bartender/waiter was in no rush to put my order through - he apologised later but I think he completely forgot to tell the chef!

Its claim to be a wine bar AND bistro though is something that has never sat well with me. As a restaurant, it is very successful, and boasts breakfast, lunch and evening menus in addition to a tapas menu. The food is lovely and reasonably priced, and the service is good - everything you'd expect from a small restaurant. However, on a busy night, Mello occasionally falls a little short. Staff are torn between serving behind the bar or serving the food, and if there are large parties eating in the 'bistro area' and drinking in the bar area, it can become crowded and sometimes uncomfortable, with the local drunk perving down the top of the local Tesco's manager who's trying to enjoy a staff party. All this aside, it is a pleasant venue, with varied music, patrons and food. Somewhere to go for a quiet lunch or mid-afternoon snack, or a good old knees-up and spy-on-the-locals type night!

A very good wine bar nonetheless, and pleasant enough when it's not too busy, Schmooze was one of the first upmarket places to spring up in the area. Now somewhere to be seen, it started off being a very cool but laid back place where students wouldn't feel awkward going into. Now I doubt you would find a pair of jeans in there, unless they were designer ones moulded on to the body of one of these tight t shirt-wearing troglodytes who skulks about these places. Don't get me wrong, it is no reflection of the place itself, it just seems to attract these wannabes. As I said, it is a very accomplished wine bar and the snacky food I've had here can't be faulted. Unfortunately, the clientele here spoil the atmosphere for me a bit, although they are not as bad as some other places in Allerton. Generally, it is a nice, moderately priced place to chill out in, but I wouldn't spend more than an hour here.

Inside Schmooze doesn't disappoint, with room to move around, when it isn't busy, with an up and downstairs. I am unable to comment on the wine, but I have heard that they know their wines. In terms of the food, it was tasty - stuffed mushrooms with gruyere cheese and apple and pear pancake. Depending on how much you want to eat, Schmooze is very accommodating. You can have a main course meal as a starter or vice versa as they list every dish on the menu as either a baby or fat dish. Prices were a little more than I like to pay but I would have been disappointed had I had to eat something totally disguisting. As I hadn't I was happy to smile enjoy the food.

Hosting pub quizzes and having wide screen TVs showing various sporting events has probably not done it any harm, but I'm fairly sure that the only thing that has kept this pub afloat really are its loyal patrons, most of whom are getting on a bit. The pub does have some good food and a nice atmosphere, and it is a nice alternative to all those showy bar/bistros that surround it. The prices for drinks are reasonable and it is no doubt a popular haunt for students who walk down from the Carnatic halls of residence.

When I went for food there a while back, I was convinced that the two men at the table next to me were gangsters, dealers or both, as they were quite nervy and kept going outside to make phonecalls. One of them was especially jumpy and though he ordered food, didn't eat it, choosing insteadto glare nervously at the nearest people to him, which was me and my friend. It didn't really make the whole experience that enjoyable. Having said that, I remember that the service was quick and the food was good, although I can't remember what I ate because I was too busy mentally willing the guy next to me not to freak out and attack me! Another time, I went just for drinks and sat at the bar. Although the weather was particularly bad, there were still a few people who had made the effort to go there, which makes me think that it must be quite a popular place for regulars. According to gossip, it has been recently downsized due to a fallout between the two original owners, resulting in a similar bar being opened nextdoor by the other bloke.

It's European-cum-Mediterranean cuisine could be much nicer than it is, one of the things I would recommend is the honey garlic beef with warm noodles.
