Situated in the building which used to be Pistachio Restaurant and the downstairs Vinyl bar, Milo…read moreis, in my opinion, one of the best all round venues on Lark Lane. Opening 9am til 11pm seven days a week, Milo is probably the hardest working venue on Lark Lane too. I can't think of another business in this area that serves breakfast through to late night cocktails - if you wanted to you could probably live here! The menu is a eclectic mix of posh American diner-esque fare like 'triple stacked' buttermilk pancakes for breakfast and the frankly outrageously good Hero hamburger and a sort of Mediterranean (ever had a 'Spanish Butty' for breakfast - you should try it!) and British gastro pub fusion (the posh fish finger sandwich and Winter vegetable risotto are other favourites of mine). As for the desserts...approach with caution. They are not for the faint hearted. You'll feel like you need a bit of a lie down after the sticky toffee pudding. The wine choice is pretty good and there is an interesting mix of beers, both bottled and on draught. There is also a refreshingly concise list of classic cocktails (some with a twist) and an impressive and classy collection of whiskeys and gins. The Loungers interior style fits in perfectly to the Lark lane vibe with its flock wallpaper, retro photos and prints and shabby chic furniture. Only a few weeks after it first opened it already felt like this place had been here for years. A mention must also be made of the always friendly and helpful staff who help to make a visit to Milo a very pleasant experience all round. Highly recommended.

Joy Cafe has a great name and looks from the outside in as though it would be a very enjoyable…read moreplace to stop and grab a bite to eat during a busy day or even a lazy morning. The reality is not quite as good as what you imagine but nonetheless this place does provide some decent food and a decent atmosphere to boot. The food here is pretty standard cafe fare but does hit the spot when you are in dire need of some fuel for a busy day ahead or if you are generally just starving. The service is not too quick but the staff are friendly and this makes up for any waiting time as they do give a good level of customer service. This place is average and nothing more but as I have said you could do much worse than pop in if you are in need of a culinary energy boost.

The staff are very friendly and helpful and make you feel welcome. The fry up here is very tasty. For a very reasonable £3.50 you get sausages, eggs, bacon, black pudding, tomatoes, mushrooms, hash browns, toast and tea or coffee. Everything is cooked perfectly and tastes delicious. There is often a bit of a wait for the food to be brought out, but you don't really mind if the food is good, which it is. This is a great place to enjoy a quiet bit to eat and sit and read your paper or book. It is a nice peaceful little haven away from the hustle and bustle of Lark Lane.

Full of character and pretty touches (I love the heart shaped light that hangs over the couches in the chill out corner at the back!) The cafe was just really friendly and welcoming, even though I caught them a little before close they still happily served me my steaming hot leek and potato homemade soup with crusty floury chunks of baguette. (£2.45- not bad, huh?) Just what I needed to put a smile back on my face and help me get back out into that big bad world! They also have a hot chocolate that is Divine, called "Anna's special" which makes it even cuter, topped with marshmallows and maltesers! Yum! The staff were lovely and they're open late on Saturdays, they also have a full menu with breakfasts and mains which I'm yet to try out, but I'm 100% going back for more! I give Espresso Plus an A +!

However, call in around breakfast time or before 2 and Espresso is good place to get a sandwhich, light meal or just a coffee - that's if you can put up with the Michael Buble style muzak!

There's nothing particularly outstanding about Ginger, although the food is pretty damn good, but its your general run-of-the-mill cafe. There are a whole load of smoothies and fresh juices to choose from, and although the menu isn't extensive, what you do get is fab. It's in quite a good location too: right next to the 80, 75 and 86 bus stop, a short walk from the pubs on Smithdown and all the student housing, and not that far from Sefton Park. Ginger is one of those places you'll accidentally drop in to one day and then end up going every week. I really hope this place isn't affected by the credit crunch, as it truly is a hidden gem.

Ginger Up is well decorated, spacious and comfortable. The staff are friendly, greeting you as soon as you walk in and offering their help. They are happy to suggest a smoothie to try, or just let you ponder your decision for a long as possible. The smoothies here are freshly made and are delicious. The range available is not massive but there are still a good few options to choose from. The coffee is freshly brewed and delicious. Again there is not a huge range of hot drinks available but the ones that are sound very tasty. The food and drinks are reasonably priced and come in good portions and sizes. This is a good place for a quiet drink and a chat with a friend. Look out for this place and give it a try.
