Fancy a stroll along the Mersey, but don't want to the bustle of the docks around the centre? Well there's plenty of places to choose from, but I like Otterspool Promenade.
It's a big patch of green, about 100m wide, that runs alongside the Mersey for almost as long as you want, but it does finish: south east (away from the centre) it leads to nowhere interesting, and in the other direction the promenade continues until the docks (including Albert) are reached. So yes, it is possible to walk from or to the centre along the promenade. I did it in a hurry once and it took me about 45 minutes but I do have long legs and was late for work. I swear it looked shorter on the map.
So what's great about the promenade? Great mersey views and sunsets, and in the day time there's normally a fresh breeze for kites. There's a well kept and well stocked kids playground that I'd be envious of if I was a wee nipper.
I like people watching here. Benches are dotted around and people are generally in ample measure, but never too many. Occasionally there are kite festivals here. I really meant it about that breeze.
Thirsty? There's a pub selling adequate drinks and I did spy a menu on my last visit. It's an average chain pub, but it suffices as it's got benches. I like benches. Somehow I feel this review doesn't quite do it justice, but I've rambled on enough as it is. read more
