This is a wonderful, natural environment. Excellent for those who like to walk away from all the…read moretraffic and noise, but still be in contact with civilisation. It can be accessed from Farrell Street or Manchester Road (via Peacock Avenue) and has some pathways laid out, suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. Once again, it is often necessary to watch out for bicyclists, but most are very courteous here. The odd kids on stolen and/or illegal motorcycles are not. Contrary to popular knowledge of the law, these are not legal on what used to be called common land and still need a license, tax and insurance - none of which they have. Rant over! Just off the laid paths is a quite large area which is the actual twiggery - water and marshland completely enclosed in shrubbery which is more akin to jungle than parkland. The authorities have had built raised, wooden walkways throughout this area without destroying the natural aspects - it is possible to see all manner of animal and birdlife if one is quiet enough. I have watched heron fishing in the pond near the entrance as well as kingfishers and wagtails. On St George's Day, we usually manage to pick enough dandelions for the next year's dandelion wine - more than two gallons some years.

There's a rangers cabin and they sometimes arrange activities such a planting. The linear park runs along a disused railway line and the main bridge by the car park usually has lots of owl droppings under it. Unfortunately, as often happens these days, this is often spoiled by the groups of mid-teens who hang around the play areas smoking and drinking - often intimidating anyone who passes. This is another local park which has benefitted by the council's "tidying up" policies. In recent years, it has been planted with lots of trees and shrubs as well as plenty of flowers. So far, these have, mostly, survived the games of football played over them - notwithstanding the designated football areas with goalposts. Lastly, if you're religious, the park is right next to a church with a graveyard so if you find the constant screaming of children disrespectful or offensive then this isn't the place for you. But on the plus side there is lots of nature and fields. The play area includes swings, a climbing frame, a slide, a pole, a teacup-roundabout, animal wobbly seat things, benches and soft floor incase children fall over.

A park for every one…read more It's got an athletics stadium, football and rugby pitches, a skateboard park (Used by rollers skaters and BMXers as well) Walks along the Mersey and Blackbear canal, olded dry dock, allotments, large kids playgrounds, bowling greens plus probably other things I've forgot to mention. There's ample parking in the park. It could be a great park but I guess there is no funding for it now. There's an old kiosk that would make a great ice cream hut if it was re-opened. It's a nice place to spend a few hours on a sunny afternoon.

As parks go, I ave always been reasonably fond of this one. When I was a teacher, we always held…read moresports days at Viccy Park and it was a wonderful afternoon away from lessons - for teachers and pupils. In recent years, the athletics grandstand and track has been completely overhauled and is now a superb venue. There are numerous football, rugby and cricket pitches available, as well as children's play area, crown green bowls and a skateboard park. Unfortunately, the users of the skateboard park are of the opinion that everything is there solely for their benefit. On a number of occasions, I have had to move pulled down fences which they had put across the paths, effectively preventing me from pushing a wheelchair to the area. There is a large carpark, but be extremely careful if you don't drive a Landrover or tractor! On the pathways, one always needs to be aware that bicyclists may, at any time, come along at speed. If you don't allow them right of way you will receive quite a lot of abuse, although, occasionally, I have come across some with good manners. Back to the positive side, the authotities have really tried hard to make this park attractive to all and, in the main, have succeeded. It is a delightful place to go for a full afternoon's walk, across all the wild areas and along the former Black Bear canal.

Hi Mike. You have proved that it is definitely possible to teach an old dog new tricks! Your advice…read morehas transformed our relationship with Angel, our 11-year-old rescued Bichon. We've had her for about a year but her possessiveness over food and resources was getting much worse and we were really worried that things were not going to work out with our current family situation. After one home visit from you, we have put in place all of the advice and training measures you suggested and everything is going really well. The daily growling incidents have reduced considerably now we know how to avoid and distract. Mealtimes in particular have improved - we are putting only small amounts of food in her bowl, then putting it down after she waits and then repeating the process until she has had the whole portion. One of the key things you helped us realise, is that just because she is 11, not to let her get away with things. For example, she used to have a set route she preferred for walks, with lots of little foibles about where to cross the road and stop at certain points. We used to indulge her routines and because she is an old dog, let her do what she wanted. But now, if we want to go left and she doesn't, I stand still until she stops pulling. Then I start to move towards the way I want. If she pulls again I stop, and I do not look at her. Eventually she starts to come towards me and once we are trotting off in the new direction she is fine. Thanks again for your advice. It has made Angel a much happier little lady.

Inside, it is a different story, so I imagine it has been designed for security after a number of facilities around Warrington have been victims of arson over the years. This centre has a reasonable-sized car park and good hardcourt areas as well as grassy fields. Inside the centre are a number of rooms for the use of various community groups, including a good sized main hall and kitchen facilities. There are a number of events happening throughout the year for all sections of the local residents put on by various local voluntary and sponsored groups. The centre itself is right at the end of Bridgewater Avenue, just past the local convenience store not, as shown on some maps, as down Mort Avenue nor as on Google, as at Lymm Cross!
