So I hadn't been here in years, in fact to make me feel old I could easily say over a decade, potentially no more recent than when I was 12 if not younger, so at least 16 years ago probably a little more.
So upon walking up to the building, out of the corner of my left eye a piece of childhood nostalgia glinted, and I gleefully wandered over to the Remote controlled boats which as a kid were AWESOME!.. Not so much now, unsure if they were even working.
What was really noticeable was this initial "greeting area to start getting your pennies" looked just a tad run down and almost like it had been put there as an after though of "not sure what to do with that hole in front of the building, lets fill it with water" the kind of thing you would never have noticed as a child and would just wonder why your parental unit was dragging you away and not feeding the machine with shiny coins.
This run down feel did become a bit of a theme for me as I went around, but again its something your children would not even notice.
Upon entering I departed with £30 from my wallet (£15 per adult) so in the grand scheme of what you pay for days out at attractions them parks, not really a terrible sum though as the money went through I had already calculated how many beers that could have been.
Now through the turnstile, I looked about, ready for my underwater adventure to begin and then realised I didn't actually have a clue where to start, the signage inside is not very good, the Main entrance/lobby turns out has many different entrances leading off from it several hidden behind displays and its also not very clear which ones are the starts and ends of the sections of the aquarium. After 'debating' with she who must be obeyed we were about to go with the entrance she chose, only for a member of staff to tell us the start was a different way (score one for me as that was the way I'd wanted to go) just as I was thinking what a helpful man, it turned out he directed us because it took us past his 'photo memory' stall which he wanted us to use (to which he looked rather deflated when we declined).
I feel bad at this stage as my review is sounding very negative, once in, the exhibits themselves they were all very good. The set-ups being fairly realistic while not stopping you from seeing the fish and other animals. One thing that did confuse me and I beg the readers forgiveness for my bad memory (It may even have been somewhere else) but I thought you used to be able to touch the stingrays, there were a few signs around the open tanks advising not to touch the fish (though a few people did just ignore this, including one man who went all the way upto his elbow to stroke the fish).
On the wander round we were let down by the signage on two more occasions, the first being when we came to the end of the first section there was nothing to suggest there was any more aquarium which nearly made you feel cheated but luckily we saw some people coming up some stairs so wandered that way to find there was more the sign for this section was halfway down the stairs.
The other was as we were going round, over the tannoy they announced the Otters were being fed, my other half just about managed to contain a squeal that we should go and see, to which we floundered about trying to work out where the otters were, eventually finding a member of staff who happily told us that the otters were through the giftshop out the back (why would anyone even think to wander through the giftshop to find more exhibits, the gift shops normally the end) unfortunately we missed the otter feeding by the time we found it, and just ended up wandering back to where we'd left.
The Water tunnel was good, even when the sharks en mass started following us along the tunnel very slowly (Jaws 3 anyone). We also saw some feeding going on with some of the smaller tanks as we went around which is always good as it gets the fish moving.
'Venom' their poisonous stuff section, all good, though not a fan of the Spiders/Tarantulas, and what I would note is if you are reeeeeally bad with the Eight legged Daemons you can't just bypass you do have to go through unless you're prepared to go back to the entrance, I had a bit of a looksy but when spidery things are infront, to the sides, behind and the section is heavily dimmed so pretty dark, the imagination was running rampant and I just moved on (feeling the shame as a bunch of school kids ran in laughing and shouting with faces pressed up against the perspex).
Once you have finally made sure you've seen everything what is nice is that you can go in and out of sections as you please so if there was one bit you really liked you can just go straight back to it.
For the price its not a bad way to spend a day not much more than a national park and much cheaper than a theme park. Plus I reckon if you have kids with you its a brilliant way to spend an afternoon. We wandered round all the exhibits in about 2 hours. read more
