A great escape room "monitor " can make all the difference, and last night we had Sydney as our escape room, master, and she did such a great job with those of us who've done a lot of escape rooms, and those of us who haven't. We booked and completed the Alice in Wonderland escape room here and had a really great time. The theme was so fun and decorations were cool. We have escaped several Red Door escape rooms with just the two of us so I was hoping that this one wasn't too easy or too hard. The staff told me there are 16 puzzles in this room and assured me we will have plenty to solve but it is totally solvable with two people. We escaped with just 3 minutes left and definitely had our hands full in the second half of the hour. Highly recommend this room! read more

We played the Mystical Manor - the quality of the decor and puzzles were great. It was not one of those escape rooms where you were constantly reading - you really needed to utilize somw critical thinking for this one. Would definitely return for other rooms. Our game-master was really nice too, although we didn't get her name. All in all, great time! read more

Escape Room 831 was a great experience as an escape room enthusiast! Coming to Monterey to enjoy the cooler weather while we escaped Sacramento was great. Finding this room made it even better! Our game master was amazing! Really into the theme. He also was super helpful when we needed a hint. The place was clean and the space is nicely decorated. The room was determined as a medium/hard room and my friends and I escaped with 12 mins left. I really want to come back and experience the other rooms as well! When booking make sure to book ahead, there was only one time slot left for the room when we booked. BE AWARE: there are THREE locations for Escape Room 831! So when selecting. Stopped in for an Escape Room experience and landed on Mystical Manor. Yeli was our game master and was superb, very fun to talk to and quite personable! We were able to escape with just under 16:00 minutes so spare. Would recommend this room for medium level difficulty. This was able to be completed by two people. Beware this room does require some crawling and crouching. read more

I've taken my sister to the Mystical Manor a few years back and this year I had my Dad join me for the Alice in Wonderland escape room for my birthday. It was an amazing and fun filled experience. It was WAY more fun than we expected. We booked this because our 13-year-old wanted to do an escape room. I did NOT expect to actually enjoy it. We booked the Mystical Manor room at the Cannery Row location and it not only was fun, it blew our expectations out of the water. The challenges were engaging and surprising. Our game master was outstanding, and she did an awesome job of gently nudging us when needed with hints. We can't wait to come back and do more of their rooms. Highly recommended! read more

I went with my son to do Alice in Wonderland on Sat, Feb 8 at 2;30 pm. The inside of the building was great and very whimsical and matched the theme. The actual game room itself was PHENOMENAL! It was probably one of the best ones we've seen and we've done at least 18 or so escape rooms. We absolutely loved it. We had 7 mins left to spare. It was whimsical and fun, and challenging enough that we had to ask for several clues. The bad part that took away from our experience was the game master. When she was going over the rules with us, she was mumbling, stuttering, not making sense of her words and she kept saying "umm i think that's it." One time, she was explaining the magnet locks to us and trailed off and didn't finish her sentence. When she took us to the room to give us the backstory, she sounded like it was her first day and didn't know the story at all. I would have preferred that she had a sheet to read out to us. During the game, she sounded bored, zero excitement in her voice as if she didn't want to be there. When she gave us clues, she wasn't very coherent to the point where I asked her to repeat what she said because she didn't make any sense. She didn't cheer when we escaped like all other game masters do. She didn't offer to take a picture of us -- I had to ask her. It just really kind of ruined the experience is the best way i can describe it, which is a shame because it was a fun room. read more

Me and my partner went through Alice's dream (we didn't finish) and we had Ash as our game master Alice's dream was absolutely amazing and we had an wonderful time, especially thanks to ash... ash explained everything we needed to know and they made sure we knew we could ask for help if needed and knew what we were doing, they made the experience really cool and with their help we got into the third room. Played "Submergency" which is labeled "great for beginners". A good choice since we've (wife and self) only done 1 prior escape room and... lets be honest.... need a fair bit of help. Jesus (I think) did our introduction and was super friendly. We were actually about 30mn early but since the room was unoccupied, he got us going immediately. While we did need more than a few hints (thanks game masters!), we managed to finish with 5 minutes left and had a ton of fun. One of my favorite little touches was the informational display, that showed the running time until nuclear annihilation. That was also how they sent you hints, if you raise your hand for help you got a computerized "incoming transmission" over the speakers and a text hint. A great touch to keep you "in the moment" rather than some escape rooms which use the more traditional "voice of god" hints. Location: A few of their rooms are on Wave St, which was formerly Exodous escape rooms (and still shows as that on Google Maps sometimes). Basically if you've found the "Whaling Station Steakhouse", you're in the right place - just walk into the parking lot (on either side) to head around to the back of the building. The good: We did Alice. We had a group of 6. Susie was an amazing taskmaster/game master. The facility was clean. Bathrooms were clean and easily accessible. The puzzles were thought provoking but not overwhelming. We finished with 10 minutes to spare. I truly hope that I have another opportunity to go back and try another room. Oh!! And there was ample parking (both generous street parking but also in the back of the building). The bad: honestly nothing. It was a great experience. HIGHLIGHT OF MY TRIP!!! My friends and I came down to Monterey for the weekend for a mild bachelorette party. We ended up doing the imprisonment room and it was SO much fun. I will say, it's pretty hard but also there were only 4 of us. However, the best part about going here was our "game master" Scott. Scott is not only welcoming but he is hilarious. From the get go before we even walked towards our room he was making us crack up. He honestly made our entire trip. You could really tell he loves his job. Luckily here they give unlimited hints and don't take time away per hint, we loved talking to Scott throughout the game even if we weren't asking for hints. At one point we got really stumped and were a bit too prideful to ask for even more hints, so Scott just started handing them out, lol. In this room the hints show up on a TV typed out, but for every hint you could feel his personality shine through. Just the way they were written out made us laugh. We literally could not have made it out without his help, which we are so grateful for. We got out with only 2 minutes to spare! (I can't fail, I aim for perfection lol). We have named Scott as an honorary bridesmaid because he was definitely on our team and just a great asset to have. WE LOVE YOU SCOTT!!! read more

My boyfriend and I did the Terminal our first night in Monterey - me with no experience prior, and him having done only one before this. We loved the atmosphere and I got super obsessed after we won so I immediately booked The Gate (the hardest level) while we're on a roll haha. The setting and the props were AMAZING. I can't say enough good things about this place. All games at their Wave St location are amazing. The Gate there is challenging but so unique with top notch set design. Submergency and The Terminal are both high set design, extremely fun games. I went back and played Alice's Dream again, it was just as amazing as the first time when I played a few years ago! Definitely a great business. I highly recommend coming here and trying all of their rooms. I went to Monterey for the weekend with my best friend and, since we love escape rooms, we checked out what escape rooms there were in the area. We found Escape Room 831 and did 5 of their 7 rooms they have. All of them were great! Really good puzzles, progression, and production value. They have awesome props to go along with the puzzles and the atmosphere is really well thought out and executed. The staff was all very very friendly and helpful and we even got to meet and talk to the owners Christina and Barry and they were wonderful. I love that their business is family run and how passionate they are about their rooms and wanting people to enjoy them. We will definitely be coming back to try the last 2 rooms and we are excited to see what's next! read more

Escape rooms stressed me out. I had never been and did not know what to expect. For me, it seemed like it would be stressful and chaotic but my 10 year old really wanted to do this for her birthday. While visiting Monterey for they weekend, we drove by and my daughter begged us to find out the details. This company has several escape clue solving games at two close locations. As a family, we had a great experience. The game master supports you at every turn so just relax into the game and have fun. We did the Alice in Wonderland Dream. We were able to make it through in the allotted time and had a great experience! Barrie gave us an excellent introduction and was very personable. This is the BEST escape room I have gone to. The rooms were very detailed, high tech, clean, and very thought out. The hints do not cost you time and are very clear without giving away what to do. The game masters were very present and considerate, we never waited very long for a response. My group was small so we were paired with another couple. They ensured that things would be fair and made sure we knew one person from their group (2 people) had to agree to a hint before they gave one. They were very welcoming from start to finish, they don't rush you at any point. I highly recommend visiting them! They have 2 locations. You will not regret it!
