Since we were going to be in the area, it was added to our agenda for the day. From the parking lot, you see a baseball field, life size train behind black gates and restrooms. The parking lot was adequate in size and held about 20-25 cars. We were fortunate to obtain the last open parking space while others circled and departed. At the entrance of Dennis the Menace, there are the restrooms, a case for free books to leave or take, a stand on the background of the playground, an oversized lion who's mouth serves as a water fountain (so cool!) and a Dennis the menace comic strip page. Directly behind the train, to your right as you enter, is an oversized figure of Dennis the Menace enclosed in the gate. There are 2-3 stands sharing the history and significance of the trains presence. There are large rocks to climb with two tunnels to walk through, a rock climbing wall, a cross bridge connecting two large rocks, swings, slides, a maze made from gates leading to a smaller play structure, a tube based slide, an oversized sunshine staircase, a boat, and so much more. This space is incredible to experience as an adult, our daughter ran around for hours allowing us to share in her fun running along side her. There were few spots offering refuge from the sun and seating was minimal. There are a few benches, but mostly the stone structure surrounding the play area was used. The gnats...they were everywhere in swarms making it difficult to navigate and fully enjoy. We were constantly swatting at the tiny buggers, our daughter was existing free as a bird making her way around the park - doubt she noticed. There were a few spots on the park we were able to find relief, very few. It would be great if the park implemented some bug deterrent to lessen the presence of the gnats. Other than that, it was an incredible experience we all enjoyed. We were there for a few hours and only departed because she needed to eat dinner. 4.5 due to the presence of the gnats. In their absence a solid 10.

Dennis the Menace Playground, Monterey…read more August 2026 I've been here a few times with my family. This is an awesome park and it's pretty big! This park is great for all ages even for adults too! I highly recommend going on the weekends, although there are a lot of people, I think they close during the weekday since there's a preschool nearby. Right next to this playground entrance, there's a baseball field and there's a small snack bar, it's called El Estero Snack Bar, they sell hamburgers, fries and drinks. We ordered the nacho cheese fries with jalapeno peppers on the side. It came out piping hot! Although it seems so basic, it was really good on a cold day! Highly recommend this playground and would come back if I'm in the area. This place is awesome!

My baby is very shy and she was able to play and make some very sweet little friends. In regards to parking it was very full but it only took me 2 rounds around the parking lot to find one. I can say that many people don't know how to park properly some were parked in double spaces. There are some handicapped parking in the front. For the mess around the park I did see some however I think that's more of the parents' job rather than the park maintenance itself. I look forward to visit this place soon

Located within this park they have a basketball court, a ball field and a small playground. I believe it is dog friendly as I have not seen any signs which state otherwise. The one thing to note is that in the later hours of the day, parking is very limited. However anytime before 3pm and you won't have any issues finding parking. You can enter the park from either Anita St or Monroe St. Be careful in Monroe, as the curbs are VERY high and your passenger door will hit the curb when you open the door. Basically, a private park (at least BBQ/Picnic Table-wise), with all the standard bells & whistles... The rest of the park is up for grabs for visitors, though during our visit, drop-in's were relatively scarce. There's a fairly decent size field to play ball/Frisbee, or whatever... One level up from the picnic area is a full-sized basketball court. Up further is a kiddie-playground & just across the way (via a private walkway, adjacent to Archer) is another kiddie playground off Hoffman St. No porta-potty, though (another plus) as there is a fully functional & CLEAN, unisex restroom (sans paper towels, but does have a modern hand dryer). Considering you're at the top of McClellan Ave., in certain areas you can actually see Monterey Harbor from a distance (as well as feel the cool ocean breeze). Some items required securing to the table as it did get a bit windy at times. The breeze though? Brrrrrr... I used to live in this area wayyy back in the day & assumed I could get by in a short-sleeve T... Nope... After about 2 hours, I jumped in the car & took the short drive down to Lighthouse (corner of Prescott, across from Gianni's Pizza) & picked up a sweater from OTB Surf Shop. Yes, I probably could've gotten by & roughed the cold, but (subconsciously), I think I just wanted to visit the old surf shop at its newer & larger location... Ahhh, memories... All-in-all, it was fairly sufficient/adequate. Not entirely blown away, but having the VIP feel of our own personal park/bbq/picnic tables was a definite & obvious plus. Park as a whole was clean & relatively well-kept. They're literally a hop, skip & a jump away from Cannery Row as well which is another plus... Being at the top of this hill though with the typical overcast sky & chilly ocean breeze had us looking like a family of Eskimo's fairly quickly. That being said, don't forget your jackets! Biggest negative I'd say is the placement of the playground in relation to the picnic area. If you have younger kids, you'd definitely need to supervise as they'd literally be out of site/earshot. (though that's what Grandparents are for) ;-)
