Despite a longer than expected wait on a Friday evening, my experience at Northern Virginia Doctors…read moreof Optometry (NVDO) was excellent. Dr. Hubert and the entire staff were kind, patient, and professional throughout my visit. Upon arrival, I was greeted warmly by the front desk staff. Note that if you're a first time patient, you'll have several forms to fill out via paper. On the bright side, the pen I borrowed was super smooth to write with. Plus one star for that! For some reason, the doctor was behind, but the staff did a good job of informing me of the delays, popping in and out to let me know how much longer they'll be My not so favorite part about optometry visits is the puff in the eye and the dilation part, but that's just me. The tech was very patient with me blinking and having to re-do maybe twice or three times. Once seen by Dr. Hubert, the visit accelerated from there. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and was able to describe my conditions in a way that was understandable for me. Little did he know I come from a family of eye doctors, but I so appreciated that he was able to catch something my family had missed all along. The staff even gave me a week's worth of contact lenses samples as I was going away for a week, and that was so appreciated, especially since my visit took longer than usual. I was able to get my contact lens prescription via email too since it's a bit of a trek for me to find parking or walk there - super convenient. Overall, I highly recommend NVDO. Even if they have a slower / hectic schedule, they really do care about their patients and are super accommodating. Be sure to book way ahead of time because their schedule goes pretty far out - I waited 3 weeks for my appointment.

I went to the Rosslyn location but they don't seem to have a yelp page so writing the review here…read more Recommended to this practice after being a patient for many years at another practice - the other eye care practice was purchased by a PE firm and quality of care at least on lens fitting exams just deteriorated. For my appt, some staff gave me the peripheral vision exam, and some other routine exams first before Dr Hubert came for the eye exam for lenses. He was very patient, attentive, and answered all of my questions. Very happy with the experience. My previous experience at the other eye clinic was pretty terrible, an assistant was doing eye exam for lenses and a Dr only came in if there were problems, the sample glasses that the assistant tried on me with the prescription he got was still blurry, Dr was very annoyed that she had to step in and check the work instead of just signing off on it. That's what happens when health clinics get sold to PE firms, they focus on the bottom line more than patient care (trying to get assistants to do most of the work to free up Dr time and see more patients). Dr Hubert mentioned that NOVA Doctors have no intentions of selling their practice to PE and I can see the difference in care. Thank you also to the office staff who are very friendly.

Plus all of the staff are friendly and helpful. I recently had a problem with my right eye which scared me. I woke up with sticking and tears streaming from my eye and I had problems seeing clearly from that eye. I thought it would soon go away but it didn't, it actually got worse. The following day I went into Thompson Eye Care but Dr Gerald wasn't there so I saw Dr Kathryn. She was super helpful and gentle with my eye. She ran thorough exams and explained everything she was doing. By the time she was through my eye felt a bit better and she called in prescription which I picked up that night and I was told to return the next day. The following day my eye felt better but still had the same symptoms this time I saw Dr Gerald who greeted me and told me Dr Kathryn apprised him of my problem. He ran a couple tests and took photos and he explained what he was seeing. He asked me some questions which made me realize that I had wiped my eye with a tissue and it scratched my eye. This caused the discomfort and an infection. This is the reason I have been coming to this place for my eye care. This father/daughter team is super able to make me feel taken care of. But that seems to be the trend lately with a lot of practices. First of all, I have a large amount of respect for office staff. I believe they work hard to make the patient's experience a positive one. However, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, I wanted to report a phone problem to the office manager. I politely asked to see her. She never came out. Realizing she is a busy person, I asked that she call me -- which never happened. Here was the issue, which I thought to be significant. I had an eye issue which I thought needed to be addressed. I started calling about 1130 on Tuesday morning, September 1. The message on the phone said the voicemail was full and no one was picking up. I tried about 10 times -- so did my husband -- with the same message -- mailbox is full. Then I tried texting -- no response to my message. I tried online. Actually, my reason for the visit didn't fit any of the criteria listed. I tried for about three hours to get through. My husband tried. Finally, I just got in my car and drove over to the facility to make an appointment. (Wednesday -- there are no doctors in the office which I find rather unsettling). On my scheduled appointment, I thought the office manager should be aware of the situation I faced int rying to make an appointment -- however, as stated above, there was no communication between the two of us even though I respectfully asked. I thought it was important that they be aware of the issue. Again I have total respect for staff but I felt the phone issue was critical.

I had three appointments at this establishment and quickly learned that unless you make an appointment to be one of the first patients you will wait for hours. That is unless you are the first patient of the day and the doctor you are scheduled to see if always late, and I mean late by 45 minutes or more. This was known by the schedulers and the optometrist assistants as when I mentioned I had been waiting for over an hour they stated that the doctor I was scheduled to see is always running late then takes her time eating her breakfast before seeing patients. After my second appointment of being prescribed 4 products three of which I had to purchase from them I realized that this place is a money grab. They want to continue pushing you to purchase their products instead of a resolution. I wanted to be sized for hard contacts as my optometrist had already confirmed I was the ideal candidate for it; however they stated they wished to continue meds. I made the decision after my third appointment that this was not the place for me. I never had an appointment where the waiting room was not full to the point patients were sitting in the hallway. Not the type of establishment I will support.
