I only ever do simple cuts, nothing fancy. My haircut, done by Anderson (a level 3 stylist), is objectively good. The skill was there. But it's definitely shorter than I wanted it. Went in for a lob, came out with an asymmetrical bob...Honestly I was panicking while he was drying it because it was starting to look like Lord Farquaad from Shrek. I asked if he could style it like in the reference pictures I showed (simple waves, to reduce Farquaad-ness). He tried to do it with the brush/dryer, which obviously wasn't working, and didn't want to use a flatiron. So I just suffered through scalding heat on my scalp and hair pulling. I got told I don't have curly hair. I got told I don't have frizzy hair. I, in fact, have both of those. Some other minor things: 1. When I got home I had some hair that was noticeably longer than the rest, like it never got cut. So...I had to do it. Just a few strands, but normally stylists check for that when your hair is dry. 2. I almost never use heat on my hair, so I asked for recs and mentioned a specific brand doesn't work for me. He immediately said he loves that brand. I said yeah...but it doesn't work for me. Anything else? "Any salon brand." Cool. Not helpful. 3. Asked for something at the end to tame the pieces that were sticking out (again, I have frizzy hair). He looked...confused? Smoothing as a last step has been standard at every other place I've been to. There is nothing in the whole salon like that? Also, my introvert-self just wants to go somewhere where I don't have to be engaged in conversation the whole time. Anyway. Won't go back, my hunt continues.

I came back at set time and they whisked me off to get shampooed right away. I only waited a couple of minutes while my hair story guru was finishing up with his previous client. I loved that the staff checked in and kept me updated. Things were clean and they were able to tell that I had a morning and may not have been the most talkative, which I super appreciated! The place is no frills and it's not fancy but my guy knew was he was doing. I showed him some inspiration photos and he got to work. The whole experience was about an hour from start to finish and I love my new cut. I didn't see any prices and didn't even ask! LOL. Imagine how surprised I was when they told me my cut was only $53! I happily swiped my card and tipped my shampoo lady and guy in cash and walked happily over next door to Ranch 99 to get some lunch. He did check in with me throughout the process, but it was confusing. I explicitly said I wanted my bangs shorter, yet he continued cutting them longer than what I had shown or said. I'm not sure where the communication broke down, but the end result was the opposite of what I asked for. He also asked if I wanted to thin my hair. I didn't know exactly what that meant, but he said it would look better. I hesitated, but when he suggested "just a little," I agreed. Unfortunately, he thinned out so much that now I have tons of short, frizzy pieces sticking out everywhere. Again, nothing like the photo I showed. It will take years to grow my hair out to fix this. On top of that, he didn't check my face before sending me out the door. I left the salon with tiny shredded hairs stuck all over my face, like I had just walked through a hair storm. I told him explicitly what I wanted, but the haircut I received was completely different. I went in for regular bangs and long layers and left with super long curtain bangs and thinned-out hair.

For context the stylist I've been to for years is based in Baltimore and with how traffic can get I can't justify spending 40% of my saturday going to Baltimore to get my hair done. So I began the search looking for a new hairstyle salon. Tried Alexandria, Springfield, even Fairfax. But none have provided what I need and certainly not justifiable of the price it commanded. So I tried HairSocial because I found it on Google and I liked I can book online. My hair appointment consists of the following: Wash, Blow Dry, and an undercut. Sometimes I'll get it flat-ironed depending on the occasion. So I booked 4 days in advance and when I arrived for my appointment I had to wait 20 mins after my actual time (for context it was a Sunday afternoon and no one else was in the shop except for one customer). When I was seated I was only given a haircut and nothing else despite asking for a hair wash and a blowout. Considering I had to put a downpayment online to book the appointment I naturally felt bamboozled. They offered to do what I originally asked but they said I had to wait an hour. I didn't have time as I had a family dinner I had to attend so I decided to go home and wash my own hair. Before I left, the front desk offered to refund me on my card and then said no and could only offer me a credit. The credit was tied to my account yet the credit isn't available when you book online you can only access the credit if you call to set up an appointment. Extremely disappointed but the stylist did a great job with my haircut. I'm just disappointed that I didn't get what I paid for at a reasonable time. Thankfully the management of the loc in Tysons Corner set things right and as a result despite this location being closer to me I go out of my way to visit the HairSocial in Tyson's Corner (that review will be coming shortly).

I have super course dark hair that doesn't lift easily and the whole process took 8 hours but the salon felt comfortable enough that it didn't seem like it was that long. There's Wi-Fi if you need to do some work, and snacks, drinks, coffee etc. it's also super conveniently located by other shops if you need to grab some food. Couldn't be happier with the result!
