The cost is minimal ($1.25 for unlimited rides for 3 hours), and you can buy tickets right on your smart phone. On a Saturday afternoon, the red line trains were running every 15 minutes or so. Also something to notice: there are different platforms for trains going south vs trains going north, so need to pay attention to be on the right platform (they are not connected). In our case, we needed to go South so the southern most platform was the right one to be on.

And this service is like ride share app, where they will pick you at the door and drop you off at the door. If you have a wheeler or in wheeler, no problems, you will get you in the vehicle safely and secure you safely. You have to qualify for the service and you have to go through an interview at the main building in downtown. I really appreciation the Metro Lift as it let me be independent on going to places in Houston safely and not relying on family or friends all the time. Near the intersection with Binz Street, one is on Fannin Street for Southbound and the other on San Jacinto Street for Northbound. The station is on the Red Line between Hermann Park/Rice University (toward Fannin South) and Wheeler (toward Northline). It has the usual minimal cover from rain, audible and visual announcements of the next train, and automated ticket kiosks for purchasing a pass.

But, there's something still to be said about reaching for the stars, even if you are a station. Situated next to the huge Smith Lands parking lot (primarily for medical center visitors but used during the Rodeo, too), it faces a large apartment complex, which makes for convenient hops for those dwellers who also work in the medical center. The Texas Medical Center stops are either 2 or 3 stops on the northbound line from here. First one is TMC Dryden and second one is the Memorial Hermann Hospital/Zoo stop. If you're having a medical emergency, you could buy your $1.25 ticket, hop on, and stumble into the emergency room. Actually, for liability purposes, scratch that. Call 911 instead. Pro tip: If you have to pee while riding the rail, you can hop off at this stop, enter the Smith Lands parking lot gate, and follow the blue awning path to the shuttle bus stop. There are buildings on either side of the shuttle stop and both have clean air-conditioned bathrooms, complete with sinks, soap, and paper towels. You won't find a gem of knowledge like this in any Houston visitor center brochure. You're welcome.

Light rail is slower, more open to the elements (storms, heatwaves, which is 10 months a year in Houston), and just less fancy. As far as stations go, Preston is one of the nicer ones downtown. Clean, looks brand new, and gets you to a lot of top downtown destinations. Most people that ride without tickets don't get asked for tickets. Homeless people use this train for free 10,000 times a day. Just saying. (I ride with tickets. I'm just being honest)

I am grateful that my coworkers recommended Vonlane, a premium bus service that operates between Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. The service is top-notch, more comfortable than flying, and includes complimentary meals, drinks, and snacks. They have a fleet of luxury buses with amenities such as free wifi, a restroom, and spacious leather seats. The prices are comparable to cheap flights, but the experience is more "refined", more enjoyable, and certainly more productive, especially for business travel. In my two trips so far, I have had no complaints except for a delay caused by a faulty audio system, which coincided with street repairs in front of the Hyatt Regency in downtown Houston (Vonlane's terminal). Passengers had to wait in the Houston heat with no shade for 30 minutes, leaving us sweaty by the time we boarded the bus. Despite this inconvenience, overall, my experience with Vonlane has been great.
