After a long day of traveling by train, ferry and bus, I was exhausted by the time I got into Bergen. And hungry. As soon as I checked into my hotel, I asked the concierge for recommendations of where to eat and they said that Enhjorningen was their favorite restaurant for seafood. Sold. I was told to find the building with a unicorn outside of it, which was actually a good tip of how to find this restaurant. But you must walk up the stairs for the entrance as the downstairs/retail level of this building is actually a bar. And when I walked in the restaurant, I found a charming spot with many old framed paintings and ornate decorations. So it was a little stuffy and the staff was not the friendliest, but you know what? This place isn't touristy unlike many of the other Bergen restaurants, so that's a win. The menu was straightforward with many different seafood entrees, a full wine list and some small bites, desserts and cocktails. I started with the salmon carpaccio and had the halibut for my main dish. And let me tell you, the food was amazing. The seafood was incredibly fresh and tasty. The salmon carpaccio had some pickled veggies with for some crunch and was light. And the halibut dish was one of the best halibut dishes I've ever had! It was so flaky with a lemon, dill sauce, dauphinoise potatoes and beans. I could've licked the plate, but this place was way too fancy for that sort of thing. Tasty seafood! We visited Enhjorningen early on a Wednesday evening, and it was nearly empty when we arrived but almost full by the time we left at 6. The decor is fun with paintings of landscapes hanging on vibrant colored walls, velvet chairs, and a creaky wood floor. We split the scallops and the bread, and I ordered the hake with paprika sauce for myself. The bread was surprisingly light with a nice flavor. The scallops were swimming in a decadent sauce. The hake was perfectly cooked and paired with piping hot potatoes, a sumptuous sauce, and an assortment of vegetables. Overall, I had a lovely experience at Enhjorningen and would highly recommend for seafood in Bergen. read more

This place is the best food we have eaten in Norway so far! Everything was delicious. The scallops were my appetizer and it was so good, they do come raw though. That was new for me. My husband got the salmon ceviche was another level, so good never had tried anything like that. Both of our main courses were delectable. We are only in Bergen for 24 hrs so wanted to make it worth it, and it was well worth the expensive and fun experience! You must have a reservation here too. When I was looking for restaurants to check out in Bergen, Enhjorningen was a place that various individuals online had suggested. The interior of the place gives a rustic vibe, with wooden floors and antique paintings on the walls. If you are a fan of seafood, this is definitely the place for you! There were some interesting dishes that we tried, such as the Smoked Whale Carpaccio and Anglerfish. The smoked whale had some gaminess to it, and the sauce that went along with it paired well with the meat. The Anglerfish was well cooked and had a good amount of flavor to it. My friend got the crab and although it is technically unlimited, that's only if the person does not share any crab with the others at the table. However, the dish itself with two crabs is a pretty sizable amount for most people to eat. Overall, this restaurants is great for seafood and I recommend it if you want to try some novelty dishes in Bergen! read more

I still can't pronounce this place BUT I had such a wonderful dinner with friends here. They offer a prix fixe menu, so I had a three course meal. The choux pastry with shrimp, roe, and salmon were to die for. The cod and chorizo were just phenomenal, and the panna cotta was lovely. The space is in a charming old wooden building. Jacob's Gist: Great, unique seafood in a very cool environment with prices that are par for Bergen. ============= After reading about how excellent Enhjørningen was, my dad and I decided we just had to try it before we left. We went on 5PM on Saturday and were very glad we went. The restaurant itself is unique- in order to get there you have to climb a flight of stairs before walking in to the wooden restaurant with paintings covering the wall and white tables clothes covering the tables. From just looks alone, this type of place in the US would carry a hefty price tag, but Enhjørningen is par for the course in the expensive city of Bergen. We ordered the scallops as an appetizer- which came with 3 good sized scallops. It would've been nice to have one more but they were so delicious we didn't really care. Then my dad ordered the bacalao and I ordered the fried angler fish. Both dishes were delicious- although I preferred the angler fish. While there's a lot of hype surrounding Enhjørningen, I believe it almost lives up to it. The one wish I have is a wider selection of main dishes since there were only about 5-6 choices. All of these choices were definitely more adventurous meals and I would only recommend Enhjørningen if you're an adventurous eater but trust me- it'll be worth it. read more

This was one of the better meals I had on a week-long trip in Norway. It is centrally located in the wharf area, famous from the Hanseatic Trading League. While it might seem like a tourist trap restaurant, I found it to be quite the opposite. Our group of three did make a reservation for the following evening while walking around the wharf one afternoon. We walked upstairs to the restaurant and a gentleman helped us out with our request. The following evening we came back and were promptly seated in the dining room. At the time we sat down, the restaurant was about half full, but it was completely full by the time we departed. While you might get a chuckle out of the wooden unicorn figure on display next to the name of the restaurant, and his, well...ummmm...let's just say we know that HE is a HE. 'Nuff said. Anyways, there are a few more figures on display inside, in all his glory, to watch over you as you eat, or perhaps get a "hey Mom look at the unicorn's junk" comment from a child. The interior of the restaurant is woody, dark, and moody. The servers were attentive. For a starter, I tried the fish soup. It was good, though I found my entree to be far superior. I ordered a steamed halibut which came with a spinach sauce. The fish was excellent, it was a large portion, and I left full and content. Should my travels take me back to Bergen, I will definitely revisit this restaurant. Given the quality of the food, we found it to be quite a value. read more

A few friends from Oslo took me here during our road trip and it was a memorable stop. Like others have said, it has a nice local atmosphere (not touristy!) and reflects the fishing town it is in. It is on the second floor of a building right on the wharf and the interior reminded me a little of the inside of Mr. Krabs' house from Spongebob. Very authentic maritime/fishing lodge feel to it. Prices were a bit high, but what isn't in Norway? The food and experience were worth it. I believe I had the cod as a main dish, but my friends decided to order the whale meat appetizer beforehand. It was an odd combination of whale, some sort of jam and whipped cream. Can't say I know what whale goes best with, so I had a few pieces. Wasn't too bad. The cod was delicious and everyone in our group said their food was great. I'd recommend this restaurant to friends and would definitely eat here again if/when I revisit the beautiful country of Norway. read more

This is the oldest restaurant in Bergen and has been continuously in business for decades. It is housed harborside in a row of very old wooden structures. The interior is a testament to the history it has been a part of. Most of the patrons appeared to be regular. Very few young people. Our welcome by the maitre de was somewhat cold. He also ended up being our server and as the evening wore on he warmed up to us. The seafood soup prepared in the traditional Nordic fashion was delicious. Quite quite good. This is an odd place to me when I think back about my experience. It's in one of the most picturesque parts of town and located on the second floor of a building on the wharf. It's got a traditional feel - the floor is slightly creaky and tilted, the decor inside is older-fashioned, and the staff wear the white-button-down-black-pants-apron combo that give off almost a French cafe feel. To top it off, there's an (as my guidebook put it) anatomically correct unicorn both in front of the cafe and inside of the cafe; in fact, I bemusedly sat right underneath it during the entire dinner. Everything stated above made me somewhat wary of the food that I was going to get. Was it going to be old and traditional, and was it going to be as good and delicious as the guidebooks and brochures said? Believe it here, the food is quite magnificent, and really lives up to the hype. We started off with the scallops, which were absolutely delectable. Cooked perfectly with a wonderful sear and smothered with a creamy and delicious hollandaise sauce. Next, we had the lutefisk dish (why is it so expensive~400NOK??) and the bacalao. I will admit, the lutefisk is truly an acquired taste - I love fish until the end of this earth and I thought it was good, but wouldn't recommend it unless you were truly adventurous. It's a gelatinous fish served with peeled potatoes, yellow split peas (which had a good chunk to them), and big pieces of bacon. Mixed together, it works, and the local Norwegians were all devouring it down. The bacalao is a much more universal choice: cheesy, tomato-y, oily, gluttonous; it's literally got everything. It's also HOT as heck so be careful to not burn your tongue! My most favorite dish of the night was the Norwegian cheese plate. First of all, it's ridiculously beautiful - big chunks of Norway's best blue cheese, sprinkled with walnuts, strawberries, blackberries, and dark chocolate chips, served with a spoonful of honey and sprig of rosemary. Oh wait, I forgot the little cookies, flatbread filled with seeds, and apricot jam. Get it - it's amazing. I recommend this place for the adventurous seafood eaters. Enhjørningen is a very good seafood restaurant conveniently located right in the Bryggen area. For a starter I had the whale carpaccio, which was delicious. The whale had a nice clean, meaty flavor, and the accompaniments of sour cream and berry sauce were a great combination. For the main I had the Bacalao, which is cod with cheese and bacon. It was delicious and a huge quantity of food. I'm sure you've heard/read that prices are astronomically high in Norway -- same is true here, but at least you're getting great quality and quantity. I enjoyed the ambiance and service here. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of an old building, and has a nice charm to it. The service is very friendly and fast. read more

Food was excellent! Fresh oysters, great wine, had the fried fish and my husband had steamed halibut. All were well executed well and savory. This is not a modern restaurant. Locals (and tourists) come for comfort food. Service was a bit slow but very friendly. Definitely a must try if you are looking for a locals-favored spot. This is a Bergen establishment, and came highly regarded. As such, I was looking forward to it, but also wary, as these types of places often disappoint after having been built up. Luckily, any trepidation I had was completely misplaced. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The ambiance is that of a historical/slightly formal lodge. Service can be slow, but that's by US standards, and is a cultural difference as much as anything. We had the fried scallops for an appetizer (excellent and served with a hollandaise sauce that is one of the best I've ever tasted). Main course was a bacalao stew and a lutefisk plate. The lutefisk plate is a very traditional plate of the fish with bacon, yellow peas, and dijon mustard. This dish is good to have... once. It can be somewhat bland, but I'm loathe to criticize the restaurant for that. That's how the dish is, and if you mix in the bacon and mustard, it's actually pretty good. The Enhjørningen bacalao stew though. Fantastic! This was a hot, tomato-based stew of bacalao, bacon, cheese, and tomato chunks. It was a large portion, and I finished every bit. This was an interesting, entertaining, and delicious dish, one of the best I had in Norway, period. Come here just for this (warning, it's strong, and a bit salty). Then for dessert we had a beautiful Tingvollost blue cheese plate (named best cheese in world 2016). Honestly, I wouldn't call this the best cheese in the world, but enjoyed it nonetheless. If you're in Bergen, come by! It's a historic place with good ambiance and delicious options. Word of warning, the menu is pretty small, so, if you're on the more selective side, take a look beforehand to make sure that there's an option here for you. read more

One of the most outstanding restaurants in Bergen and probably the best place to go for fish. Adventurous tourists, so long as you are not too granola, will get a kick out of the whale carpaccio. Main course must be fish, and while I have always thought salmon has become a bit too common (frankly tastes better raw or smoked than cooked out right), the fish to have has got to be Atlantic Cod. The preparation is excellent, from the fish itself to the bacon bits and the mushy peas. The bacalao is also good, but as far as fish goes, I usually prefer a simpler preparation. Excellent environment in one of the classic old Hanseatic structures on Bryggen. You can see and feel the lean in the walls and the tilt of the floor, the curve of the wooden staircase and accompanying handrail. And yes, the unicorn out front is most definitely male. read more
