Classy and elegant ambiance. They have 2 stories, first floor welcomes walk in but it's first come first serve, so when there's time a cruise ship boards, the wait can be long. The second floor is for reservations only and I recommend a reservation. It's not hard to book but do book as early as you can to get the normal time slots. I checked maybe 2.5 months ago and all the time slots for dinner were available, but a couple weeks later, only the early dinner time slots like 4pm is available. The service is nice but not frequent and the host is friendly. We were allowed to use the restroom before my reservation time. I love the menu, it carries so many Nordic traditional dishes, such as the whale steak, reindeer steak, Atlantic wolffish (catfish), deer stew, mussels, etc. We ordered the grilled reindeer steak and the pan fried wolffish. Both are beautifully plated, good portions and delicious with the right amount of seasoning. The Nordic cuisine likes to use local fruits to add sweetness to the sauce. I took out 1star because t hey are pricy. For entrees in the price range of 40-60 is fine, but when the desserts are priced at 20+, they lose the marginal satisfaction. Great location, great food. If your time in Bergen is short, this is one proper meal worth splurging on.
The food and service were amazing! I had the halibut and it was delicious. My table mates also strongly recommended the reindeer (sorry I couldn't eat Rudolph!) and steak. Overall, wonderful meal and experience.
It was a very unorganized arrival as we had a reservation and still stood there 10 min waiting for someone to pay attn. once we sat down , service was quite slow and they had a friend pop in so they were all busy chatting with the friend (needed to wave her down ) Caesar was actually dressing with a small side of lettuce but chicken was great (ask for easy dressing or on the side Now the good stuff .. On water (opt to sit outside ) Shrimp sandwich was delicious (bread was a bit too hard and I needed a steak knife to cut it but was yummy ! Pavlova with cloud berries was to die for !!

However, the restaurant lived up to its hype. The restaurant is romantic and loaded with European ambiance. This is the kind of place where you know you aren't in Kansas anymore. Lamb is something that I love, so I was happy to see it on the menu. It was incredibly good. Not gamy at all, wonderful cooked, flavorful, and tender. It was fantastic. My wife and I split the huge portion of excellent potatoes au gratin that came with my lamb. It was creamy and tasty. Norwegians LOVE potatoes, so some sort of potato dish is a requirement, I think. My wife had a vegetarian hamburger that came with fries and veggies. She said that it lacked flavor, but it looked good. The fries were excellent.
If you're visiting Bergen, you'll likely hear about Bryggeloftet & Stuene as the must-eat restaurant in town. I mean, I did, which is why after a day of traveling to Bergen from Oslo, I desperately needed sustenance and Bryggeloftet & Stuene was on my list and near my hotel. I walked in on a Tuesday night and no, I was denied. The place was packed, but the friendly hostess took my name down for a reservation for the following day. So that's what to do here. Make a reservation if you can't get in because everyone wants to eat here. The following day during my reserved time, it was a much more satisfying experience since I ate here! The restaurant is located just across the pier and along Bryggen, and inside, it's decorated with old paintings and photos of Bergen and Norway with classic, wood furnishings all around. It takes you back to Bergen's former days, which is the charm of this place. Staff could not have been friendlier. Bryggeloftet & Stuene has traditional, Norwegian food. I ordered the wolffish, which was in season, and the fish came with veggies and a side of potatoes to however you want them made. And this is when I learned that the area prepares potatoes dauphinoise, which is like au gratin and was sooo delicious. My dish comprised of fresh wolffish in a lemon, dill sauce, fresh vegetables and of course, with the side of dauphinoise potatoes. But this is the kind of restaurant that no matter what you order, everything will be delicious here. Ya gotta eat at Bryggeloftet & Stuene when in Bergen.

I tried to walk in one evening and they were not able to accommodate me, but I was able to get a seat the next day for a late lunch. I started with the Bergen fish soup. It was simply delicious with or without the butter. I had the reindeer for my entrée and I was pleasantly surprised how tender it turned out. The sauce and lingonberry also paired very well with the reindeer.
The Deer shank was very meaty and didn't taste gamy at all. The Wolf Fish was very meaty and tender. We also tried Smoked Whale appetizer and it was very smoky but didn't taste fishy. We were told that was Minky Whale and sustainably harvested.
This was another restaurant that I had seen recommended online for places to check out in Bergen. Located next to the piers, the location is a pretty convenient one to get to. There are two levels to the restaurant, and there was plenty of space for me at lunch when I went. The waiters were very helpful and I was seated right away after arriving. I wanted to try out more of the local dishes in Bergen, so I decided to order the Langoustine here. They give you a whole plate of Langoustine to eat, which I was pleasantly surprised as it was a sizable portion. The seafood was very fresh and tasty, with juicy meat awaiting me once I cracked open the shell. Even though I just had this one dish I can imagine the other seafood dishes at this restaurant would be of similar quality. Overall, I greatly enjoyed my experience here and urge those wanting authentic Norwegian cuisine to check it out!
This spot is the oldest (since 1910) Bergen restaurant and was highly recommended. Saturday evening reservation wasn't happening but we lucked out for a Sunday evening res at 7:30. We were seated upstairs and had a bit of a harbor view from our table. Rustic interior and felt like we were in a large cabin-atmosphere went along nicely with our food. Ordered Norwegian Beers-Hansa Blonde and Nogne Southern IPA-both were enjoyed. We decided to each order an appetizer and share two entrees-really nice they were accommodating. Bergen Soup was full of shrimp, and fish dumplings-perfect for a chilly evening, the Bruschetta was different given the sliced vs chopped tomatoes-delicious and saw a few other tables ordering this one, and Scallops and Chorizo-quality vs quantity and excellent! For main it was the Moules Frites and Fish Casserole. Moules was perfect for sharing with a generous portion of delicious Mussels. The Fish Casserole was more of a stew with a plethora of fresh fish, Lobster, shrimp, scallops to name a few. We enjoyed both dishes and perfect for 3. Service was fun and engaged-our server took great care of us. Looking back, I do wish we would've ordered a Meat/Game dish-next time! I know this place is touristy - but it is definitely a delicious and memorable experience when visiting Bergen and I'm so glad my partner and I made the visit! We did have to wait quite a bit for a table, it can get busy around dinner time. But it was well worth it to try some local cuisine. The seafood soup was delicious, as well as the mussels. We loved our fish main too! Highly recommend, despite the "touristy" nature of this restaurant.
Though it felt a bit touristy, it was highly recommended and indeed it was very worth it. The food was very delicious. We got the mussels and the quantity was amazing. Easily over 200 mussels, and the subs was delicious. The mussels were fresh and did not have any sand, so we would highly recommend this! We also got the reindeer steak, which was very well cooked as well. It was tender and the gravy delicious. It was a tad bit gamey, but not as much as we expected given that it's reindeer. The gravy definitely helps cover up the gameness if that's not what you want. The fish soup was delicious as well, as the fish was very tender and fresh.
We were intimidated by the crowd without having a booking but was able to get seated for 2 around 7:30pm on a Wednesday for walk in. Had delicious Atlantic catfish and cod main courses. Very busy and flipping tables quickly. Impressed by staff!
Great restaurant recommended by a friend of a friend. Be sure to make a reservation- you can do online- so you are not disappointed! We ate on the first level. Nice dining room with painted murals and a homey atmosphere. We had great service and the food came out quickly. They are known for the reindeer entree and the Fiskesuppe (fish soup). I had a salad (huge; with a very good mustard dressing) and the Fiskesuppe. The fish soup was creamy and flavorful. My husband had the lamb shank with root vegetables and mashed potatoes. He said it was very good. We shared their caramel flan - it was delicious and the flan itself was perfectly smooth. Highly recommend! read more

After dropping off our luggage at our hotel in Bergen around 7:00P, we came straight over to Bryggeloftet & Stuene, the oldest restaurant in the city. As anticipated, it was completely full, but surprisingly, we only had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. I had read that the fish soup (appetizer) is a must-try, though the mussels and their burger were super popular that night and looked delicious too. + FISH SOUP: The four of us ordered just one bowl to share as a starter and it was creamy, almost like a chowder! There wasn't a ton of seafood, just a few fish balls and small shrimp, but we still enjoyed the flavor. It came with paper-thin crackers and butter on the side. + PAN-FRIED WOLFFISH: Two thick, moist pieces of wolffish were served in a pool of creamy white wine sauce alongside broccolini and small shrimp. All fish and meat dishes include a choice of potatoes. I selected the dauphinoise (sliced potatoes with heavy cream and garlic) which was so rich and buttery! My sister ordered the slow-cooked LEG OF DEER with baked root vegetables, mashed potatoes, and port wine sauce. The deer was so tender and a sizable portion. She selected the mashed potatoes which were creamy and smooth. My mom got the filet of NORWEGIAN LAMB with seasonal vegetables, mushrooms, baked cherry tomatoes and red wine herb sauce. Of the main courses we all ordered, I considered this my favorite plate. Normally I am not a huge fan of lamb, but it was cooked to a perfect medium and didn't have much gaminess at all. Also super tender! The service was very friendly, but after we received our soup, we waited almost one hour for our main courses. Since the soup was a starter, our waitress asked if we wanted to eat it first or with our meal, so had we known there would be such a large gap between courses, we would have opted to just have everything together. The timing is really my only critique. This was a terrific hearty meal after a full day of travel. We throughly enjoyed dining at one of the oldest establishments in Bergen, Norway. Their food was exceptional. Make sure you make reservations ahead of time. The reindeer was perfectly cooked with a creamy wine sauce. Scallops were absolutely delectable. We throughly enjoyed their wine lists and after dinner drinks. Staff was sweet and excellent. We made a reservation well in advance and dined here on one of our nights while visiting rainy Bergen. This is a VERY Popular restaurant with multiple small rooms, nooks and crannies in the main dining space which is upstairs (this is where you should reserve your table-well in advance). The highly regional menu features many Norwegian dishes including reindeer loin and various preparations of (minke) whale meat. We opted for a local cod (wolf fish) and a halibut. Both were good but the cod was outstanding with a flavorful sauce and vegetables. Of course each meal came with potatoes (mashed with mine and boiled with the cod) but I think it might be possible to substitute. Service was a bit leisurely since it was so busy but our polish server did a nice job taking care of us. We were seated in the back but you should try to get a table near the windows. The first restaurant we stopped in to upon our arrival in Bergen, and this was a wonderful experience to be had for the dining and the cultural knowledge. The location is right in the heart of the Bryggen, which is one of the touristy areas, as I am one, and is convenient because it right next to all of the shopping in the area, and all the cool local shops and stores. The service here was very professional and friendly, we arrived some time between lunch and dinner, and both menus were available to order from, which gave great variety. I decided to try something new, and unusual to me, which is the "Reindeer", which apparently is a delicacy here in Norway, so I went in for it as a main. The dish came with Potatos, just regular potatoes. That wasn't particularly seasoned with anything, so it's just potatoes. The preparation looked great, the meat was very tender and reminded me of a cross of very lean steak, and almost like Duck as well. Overall it was enjoyable, I don't know if I would order it again elsewhere, but I can now say I've had Reindeer. Great establishment to stop in and enjoy some Norwegian Cultural Cuisine. 5 stars read more
Don't let the location fool you. Right in the middle of the Bryggen Tourist center is one of the most authentic old Bergen restaurants that you must try. Located in a classic old 20th century building, Bryggeloftet provides the classic interior to match the authentic food you will receive. I always order the classic fish soup appetizer and while I went with the Mussels this time, my wife chose a fish/shrimp dish with vegetables and a side of potatoes. You can never go wrong here whether it comes to cod or halibut dishes and while I enjoyed my tastefully prepared mussels, I will certainly go back to eating a nice piece of flaky white fish next go-round. Or perhaps I will go with the full plate of scallops as my scallop appetizer left me dying for more. We finished off the experience with the rich, fudge chocolate and raspberry dessert for me and an Apple Cobbler for my wife. A nice walk through the city followed to help make. Room for our next food adventure. read more

Really enjoyed dining at Bryggeloftet for dinner! Our waitress was super friendly with explaining the menu to us as well as identifying vegetarian items for my friends. They opted to order the vegetarian lasagne and commented on the freshness of the ingredients as well as the seasoning. I personally ordered Norwegian cod which came with a creme fresh like sauce, potatoes, carrots, and a vegetable mash. The dish was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. The cod tasted very fresh and paired well with the sauce giving it some more definition. The carrots and potatoes would have benefited from a bit more seasoning though. The ambiance here is super nice as there are a bunch of paintings and is located in a historical building near the water. Very solid food and even better service, would totally recommend stopping by here if you are in search of traditional Norwegian food! read more

Do yourself a favor and DINE HERE! Omg! I ate out a few times in Bergen, but this was the best meal I've had. The same family have been running it since 1910; that's 112 years! And I overheard that they haven't closed once minus a week during the pandemic. The MUSSELS with its magical white cream sauce is amazing and mussels are super fresh and a good size. I read that mussels are known in this area. Even if you don't like seafood/mussels, I wasn't a big fan of mussels, but these I will go for! I also got the fish soup which was also really nice. Super fresh shrimp, cod, veggies, and the sauce isn't too creamy or heavy, leaving you wanting to keep wanting to take the next bite. The light flat bread that come with it pairs with it really nicely. And, I was already full from those two entree, but I read about the chocolate cake, and oh man! I'm so glad that I did. It's by far the BEST chocolate cake I've had in my life, and I've had my fair share of chocolate cake. It's more of a very light cake and moist brownie taste, which was amazing in every bite! I thought I was full but I kept eating and eating and next thing you know, it was gone! It even made me think about getting another one, but mind you, I was already feeling full prior to dessert. The raspberry sorbet pairs with it so nicely. Hats off to the baker/chef! Such friendly and fun service too. Ivan (meaning happy and lives up to his name) from Iceland, was wonderful and my other server (I didn't get his name). The decor was really nice to admire too--the artwork of Bryggen and 3D Viking ships display. It really gives you a feel that you may have stepped back into the times--which I love. I had read about this restaurant in a travel blog, and made reservations a month in advance. We were seated on the second floor, and were at a window overlooking the water. It was gorgeous! I loved the layout of the restaurant, how many different spaces and rooms there were...it was so much bigger than I anticipated. Our server was incredibly gracious and kind, and did such a great job. And our food was fabulous! We had the wolf fish, the fish soup, the deer shoulder, some of the most amazing potatoes I've ever had, and chocolate cake for dessert. I am pretty sure that every plate went back to the kitchen completely clean! :) Absolutely fantastic place to celebrate our fourth anniversary! read more

Some reviews we read said they had problems with the servers we did not experience that. The staff was friendly. Our entrees did take a while to come out. We watched the couple who was seated at the table next to us at the same finish their meal and dessert and pay their check as well as another table of four who was seated after us get their meals before we did so not sure what happened in the kitchen. Our food was just ok. Scallops were over cooked, we had better at the fish market the day before. Halibut was good but not memorable and reindeer steak was cook well. Was expensive just like everything in Norway but in this case I would've rather gone back to the fish market. read more

Solid place with great decorations! I booked this place 2 months in advance due to recommendations I saw online. When I arrived in Bergen I passed by this place walking around the city center and was pleased to see the cozy exterior. The location is very convenient, as it's right next to Bryggen. The restaurant was able to accommodate us coming in an hour before our reservation and the service was very friendly. Since we came at 1pm on a Friday, there was only one other party but most of the tables were reserved at a later time. Our table ordered the mussels, hamburger, bruschetta, pork ribs and cod. Overall, the food was pretty good. I especially enjoyed the fries that came with the burger. The mussels were yummy as well. I would recommend this place for a lunch if you're visiting Bergen! read more
We ended our weeklong first-time tour around Norway in Bergen and so we decided to choose this place as it had good reviews and good fame. I am always wary about these attributes as they unfortunately become tourist traps... but this place delivers both in content and execution. Exotic delicacies aside, the food here was excellent. Great portions, and good ingredients. We had a try at reindeer, whale, deer, seafood, fish soup and Desserts. All promptly served and with amazing taste. It made the farewell to this amazing country all the more bittersweet. I fully recommend this place if you ever have a chance to stop by Bergen for the first time! read more
