Plenty of room for the pups to run.
Marc P.

This review covers the park as a "dog park" option: It is summer and I was looking for a *leashless* dog park that was open early in the morning (as my black Lab hates to walk in the summer sun, I wanted a 6:30am start time). Maggie Houlihan Dog Park (a 5star review by me) was out because it doesn't open until 8am, but fortunately an online search led me to Viewpoint Park in Encinitas. Although Viewpoint Park is not a dog park per se, it essentially functions as one four days a week in the early morning hours and in the aftenoon/evening hours. Specifically, per the rules I posted in my photo, it is leashless on M,W,F, & Sundays from 6am-9am and from 3pm-8pm. The park is pretty large, providing plenty of room to launch a Chuck-It ball to give your dog some long sprints. Additionally, there is a doggie water fountain, multiple benches with trees to provide shade, and the field is all grass (the grass was quite brown, but it is certainly better than dirt). The only reasons I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 stars from a dog park perspective are: 1) Though something like 98% of the perimeter is fenced in, the two entrance/exits are not gated. However, both openings are on the west side of the perimeter, so a watchful eye and voice control should allow you to keep your dog contained. 2) The days and hours that dogs are allowed off-leash are limited. Although I give Maggie Houlihan park the full 5 stars, this place is a nice alternative if the days and hours work for you, and as long as you aren't worried about your dog running out into traffic.

There are two things about a park that really make it a winner for me: shade for those hot days and a gated area so mama can just relax a little. This park has both of these making it great! The structures are pleasant, simple, but still very fun. My youngest loved the forest truck that he could drive and play in while I sat in one of the many benches and watched. It also has a nice grassy space alongside it if your kids want to run around with a ball or have a picnic Although it doesn't offer bathrooms, across the street is the Encinitas public library (a really beautiful spot to stop so don't forget to do that!) that you could easily use and spend a few hours there as well making it a complete morning. Be sure to check this park out if you are in the area

Just across the Encinitas library is this nice park, good for a little walk with the dog, there is a bench under a tree I like to sit overlooking the ocean, I'm glad the bench isn't comfortable otherwise it would be a sleeping bed for . . . me Dog area Playground for kids Ocean views

Nice cozy park right across from Encinitas library. This park is pretty small, it only takes a few minutes to walk around it. It's kid and dog friendly. The grounds are well kept. Beautiful view of the coast and the ocean opens up when you reach the high point. Unfortunately that area seem to be favored by bums as well. Last time i came there, the area around the view point of the park was trashed, bums had their stuff all over the bench.

Great morning at the puppy park!

We love this park, and bring our little husky here twice a day to see his friends (and foes! ) It is right across the street from the public library, so my teenagers sometimes jump in there while we are running the pup. Great views up top, and a sweet place to watch the sunset over the ocean.

This review is for Ted - a literal human angel…read more Ted, the park attendant in the RV in the corner of the lot, rescued a dog that I had lost while dogsitting for the first time for some new friends. When I arrived at his RV after the owner told me Kemba had been found there, Kemba was sitting in his lap, recieving some calming pats on her head after a very stressful last 90 minutes of wandering away and being found shivering in a bathroom stall. On top of the stress and frustration at myself for allowing that to happen, I comforted by Ted's warmth towards her upon her discovery, and by his warm, sincerely helpful demeanor that he demonstrated while explaining the story to me - the embarrassed and stressed dog sitter who had made a mistake. I so appreciate Ted's presence at Cottonwood Park. He said he helps with a lot of conflict resolutions in the parking lot, which I really respect, because I used to do conflict resolution for over 4 years in courts and interpersonally. I didn't tell him that, but I felt his grounded, service-oriented presence and quiet contributions that he likely makes to everyone who passes through. Thanks so much for your help - and for helping Kemba, who is now snuggled up next to my leg under a blanket

I will say, however, that this place is so big that you can very easily lose track of your kids. There were a few times on our last visit where I was scanning the playground for a minute or two trying to find one of my kids after looking after another one for a bit. But don't worry. There really is only one in and out so you don't have to worry about kids wandering off if you are around that bottleneck point. This is a great attraction that I hope the park never gets rid of. It offers kids a space to run around & just goof off and be kids while also blowing off steam. The only point of improvement I can think of if maybe offer some more (shaded) seating for parents. On hot days that would be greatly appreciated.

He remembered it very well from our past visits. It is a second story playground and it is big enough for adults to shadow your littles if needed. On this day it looked as though an employee was monitoring at the top. I'm not sure if it was because it was near closing time or they are there for the safety of the little ones. There is a short wall that you could sit on to watch your kids from afar, This grand playground is great for the kids to burn some energy that's for sure! The kids have fun running place to place it makes me want to join them. If you haven't visit this playground it is a must. P.S. Grab some Apple Fries beforehand from the stand adjacent to the playground. Great snacking as you watch the play.

Let me just tell you--This is one of those places for me! Let's shout it from the canyon top about this awesome park. It's a spacious park that has a playground, nice & clean bathrooms, a sand volleyball court, tennis courts, cement bench tables (some shaded) & dog friendly. Perfect for group gatherings. It's easily accessible from the neighboring homes. Has its own parking lot and street parking is available too.

And I thought I was dreaming when I saw spotless bathrooms that actually have toilet paper and soap in the dispensers. In a public park! Unheard of for sure in my central SD 'hood. Not since I was a wee young lad do I remember that. More than anything, we have trouble keeping the tents and tweekers out of our nearby parks.. Suburban aggressive bravery is needed more than ever to challenge an conquer these types. Nothing of the like here- it's as if there's a shield or checkpoint to cross into the other side. You can walk up the nicely groomed grass hill and there are walking trails too. Many dogs come for frisbee and fetch-the-ball practice as well. We bring our little Lola which we keep in and out of her dog stroller. Amazing views in a quiet, gorgeous neighborhood that is the perfect meeting spot for daytime picnics.
