Beach is clean with a free parking lot just above. At the entrance there's a nice little playground, a concessions stand with actual options beyond your standard hotdogs and burgers. We came on a cloudy day so it wasn't really crowded and we found free parking in the lot up the hill, just above the beach. We came here as a family and really enjoyed it. I actually believe this beach was recommended to me, and it was everything they said it would be. The beach was nice and the water felt really good, not too cold, which made it even better. My daughter had a blast playing in the sand and just being free, and my husband loved it too, especially since it was his first time being in warm ocean water. We were able to find a spot that wasn't overly crowded, which made it feel even more peaceful and relaxing. Overall it was just a really good beach day and I would definitely come back. read more

I love beach hopping around this area to try to find the best ones- with this current summer heatwave I decided on a thursday evening at the beach. We luckily scored a parking spot on the street in a line of about 7 cars, right in front of the playground, making the treck a little easier for myself and my 2 year old. The street parking was there but def full with folks enjoying the nice day. I noticed the parking lots above the beach but did not check them out. The family bathroom is nice and was relatively clean for changing, the showers are right in front of it. Huge volleyball courts and the waves were perfect for playing in as well as the little river and "pond" where ocean over flow goes. My daughter enjoyed the playground although could use a few more swings (only 2 large and 2 baby.) and maybe a bit more shaded area. I didn't check out the snack bar but that's always super nice to have on the beach! I can't say that I'm a fan of going to the beach, but I've been here a few times to run a half marathon that started at the parking lot at C St and 3rd St. Even from the parking lot, you get a very nice view of the Pacific Ocean. It's definitely a nice venue for the start and finish of a race, especially for those that love the beach. This is my favorite beach to go to! I love that there's a playground, bonfire pits, picnic tables and volleyball nets all so close to each other. It's so clean and their bathrooms are clean also, super important to me. They have a small food vendor area that has great & delicious options to choose from. It's easy to find a spot to set up and chill and plenty to space to hang out if you want to enjoy a view without getting sand on you. It's easy to feel well protected with life guards on duty. There's a couple roundabout areas where many load and unload, which makes it a smooth beach trip as well. There's a small nearby parking lot which is convenient, but normally full. read more

Free parking!! Small beach with takeout from Beach Wolf. Free parking lot above it, with lots of street parking too. Loved their food menu. Order at the cashier, and eat on the beach. There's plenty of concrete picnic tables off the sand and on the sand. There's a playground too. Just no dogs allowed. And no alcoholic beverages to skateboarding allowed. Tons of benches at the parking lot cliff area, with amazing beach views from above. Overall, love that we can dine on the sand like that! Restrooms are also very clean. I'm definitely bookmarking this beach to visit again. I bet it's packed on the weekends and such. Pork plate! The pork was overly saucy but still a great deal, and not bad. Our friend liked his curry tacos too. We visited on a Wednesday 12pmish in mid Oct 65F weather, on the way toward East SD. It was empty, amazing scenery, lots of free parking and seating. One of the best beach experiences I've had this summer in SoCal. I went during a weekday afternoon and the place was busy, but not overcrowded. It was honestly everything I can ask for--clean sand, clear waters, big waves, towering cliffs. It was so picturesque and felt great walking along the cliffs getting further away from the crowd. Also they have smooth stones scattered throughout the sand so I was able to skip a few rocks. There's a bathroom and shower on hand so clean up is easy. Parking lot is free, but can get busy during peak hours. There's plenty of street parking otherwise. read more

Very nice beach experience here at Moonlight State Beach. A nice flat area of beach that doesn't have you worried that the cliffs are going to come down on you. Plenty of lifeguards here and a designated swimming area so you aren't run over by the surfers. On my recent visit, the weather was perfect, the waves made for some fun ocean experience, and the water was SO clear. A mid-week early afternoon is a perfect time to visit so that you can avoid the crowds. Parking is plentiful and free - so take advantage of this. The bathroom and shower areas are sufficient and relatively clean for a public beach area. And they have the Beach Wolf concessions which has a variety of offerings. Plenty of seating, a great playground. I can see why so many people say this is the beach to visit if you're here in Encinitas! read more

A busy beach with many amenities and walkable neighborhood. It's a favorite amongst locals and tourists. Large sprawling beach with huge crowds, yet never hard to find a spot to settle in. Plenty of restrooms and showers. Lifeguards throughout keeping swim and surf zones well managed. Sandy volleyball courts and grassy picnic areas, as well as a playground. Parking lot is available, but almost always full. Two good loading areas so you can drop off your stuff while someone parks in the street within half mile vicinity. Downtown Encinitas is just blocks away and perfect for an after beach dinner. read more

This beach makes top 3 in my favorite sd beaches list. On weekdays, it's not overly crowded. At least it's not when I go. Sand is perfect. I love how clean it is. Barely any trash or litter around. There's an awesome playground for little ones. There's also a cafe that serves breakfast and lunch. The views are breathtaking. Oh and the sunsets are pretty epic here too. There's a small concessionaire in case there's something you need, and a pretty decent bathroom for a beach location. Whoa, this beach is very popular- a little too crowded for my liking. However, it does have a children's playground, lifeguard station, beach wheelchairs, a concession stand, rinse station, rental booth, and a free parking lot (street parking as well). Plenty of sand on the strip but the sand kinda drops off into the water, at least during my most recent visit. There are other entry points along the streets with access to the beach; however most will likely involve walking down a fairly large staircase. read more

This is a nice beach in Encinitas. There have definitely been some improvements made with the redesign. There is even free street parking. It is in a neighborhood, so there are plenty of people looking for parking, even if not going to the beach. It is clean, there are restrooms, a nice lifeguard station, and plenty of room on the beach close to the water, or even more up away from the water closer to the snack bar and structures. The only negative are the groups of religious zealots who hang out there, have bonfires, and feel the need to approach you and tell you about their god and religion. It is a shame that people like that have to spoil the vibe and fun for everyone. read more

My morning visit to Moonlight State Beach was calm and peaceful. The beautiful landscape, the sound of waves lapping the shoreline, seagulls gliding over the breakers and a touch of early morning sunlight welcomed the new day. This community beach is in the city of Encinitas and many events are held here during the year including concerts, family movie nights and car shows. The beach is carpeted with soft, white sand and includes a children's playground, volleyball and tennis courts for those who want to enjoy a little fun and exercise, recreational equipment rentals and a snack bar. The Encinitas Marine Safety Center is also located right on the beach. Be sure to check out the Moonlight Beach Overlook with sweeping views of the beach and shoreline below. It's located just south of the Marine Safety Center. If you ever get a chance to plan a visit to Moonlight State Beach earlier in the morning or later in the day at sunset, you will see why the locals take pride in this wonderful gem. read more

Gorgeous family friendly beach. They have a parking lot and plenty of street parking nearby. If it's a Holiday, you may have a difficult time parking, but otherwise it's not an issue. This spot has it all, the beautiful beach, big playground for the kiddos, a concessions and restroom...all close by and convenient. We put a blanket on the grass across from the playgroup and had a great time relaxing and enjoying our time. I think this is a great place for family, large groups, even little birthday parties. What a great beach! Moonlight Beach is everything you want in a beach: It's clean, there are waves that are big enough for kids to go boogie boarding in but they're not too big, there's a great snack bar on site with amazing food, there's a playground, there are clean bathrooms and showers, and it's typically not really crowded. My kids really wanted to use their boogie board at the beach, and this was the perfect place to use them because there were waves, but the waves weren't super big and intimidating. We were able to enjoy the ocean, and I was able to relax and not be afraid that the Pacific Ocean was going to swallow up my children. And bonus: We got to see a pod of dolphins swimming by! I've been to many beaches on the west coast, and I've never seen dolphins at the beach. These creatures were very close to the shore, which was really cool. We visited on a Monday during the summer, and it was surprisingly crowded after lunchtime. There were lots of people! But the people cleared out after around 3:30, so if you're looking to beat the crowds during the summer, come before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. read more

Moonlight State Beach is quite the place: large life guard station, concession stand, board and chair rentals, large restrooms, fresh water showers PLUS easy walking to Hwy 101 bars and restaurants. The beach is fairly flat and wide enough to hang out all day and not get wet, yet you can walk out a bit and still only be hip depth. The few days we were here, there wasn't the kelp mess that was at other nearby beaches. As you can see from pics, the sunsets are great. But you won't be alone: there is quite the sunset crowd that shows up. The people watching can be as amazing as the sunsets. There is surfing - keep an eye out for flags and proper areas. There's shower facilities, lots of bathroom stalls that were all very well-maintained, children's playground, picnic tables. All very nice and clean. There's also a very large lifeguard tower which obviously makes you feel safe swimming in the ocean. Lots of families and children here, does get busy on the weekends. This has become one of my favorite beaches in the area. My good friend lives about five minutes away so I always stop here to decompress after the long drive from home before visiting. This beach offers so much in terms of recreation. They have volleyball courts, fire pits, picnic tables, plenty of beach to walk and run on. A great beach for little ones too as there is a playground. I enjoy the sunsets here every time I visit as the beach is never over crowded. Today I am sitting on a cliff overlooking the beach and ocean and I couldn't be happier and relaxed. I highly recommend a stroll on this beach when you are here, and hopefully some moonlight will guide you. read more

Peaceful yet busy. Beautifully simple. I came here after staying at a local air B&B. I walked over from the Main Street area down B street which was a short distance (approximately 3/10 of a mile). Upon entrance, there are several beach volleyball courts that are being utilized. Across the street, a playground for all the little people which was being used. The beach was at high tide, so there was not much beach. What beach there was, it was being used to play, build, run, body surf until land, and frolic happily. I would definitely come back here with my son. One thing to note: no dogs. While I was there, two doggies got loose and the lifeguard was asking the owner to leash them as she chased after the furry creatures and they enjoyed a short lived Scamper. read more
