My fiancée and I love to camp and this has become one of our new favorites. Reservations are booked up far in advanced but we were lucky enough to book a spot due to some cancellations. Conveniently located near bathrooms and stairs to the beach this campground is perfect for a weekend getaway or family time. We also enjoyed the fact that they have a camp store equipped with food! We didn't actually get to eat there because it was quite busy when we went. But, I assume they have other essentials too. I love that they have live music too! Just a fun place to camp! Totally recommend getting a premium campsite too to get that ocean view

Beautiful oceanfront sites. Never feels cramped or crowded. Camp Store is nearby with great food and drinks.

Amazing campsite. We spend every thanksgiving here and it is always a fun time. Restrooms are clean and everyone is always so nice. The campground store is a great bonus. They have food, feed, and snacks. Everything you need in one spot. If you can get a site on the bluffs to hear the waves crashing as you sleep. And if you are lucky you can see dolphins while you drink your morning coffee.

My wife and I recently camped overnight here and it was beautiful. The campsites are huge and the bathrooms were pretty clean. I like that the campsites overlook the ocean. It's beautiful and pretty clean for the most part. It's nice that they offer live entertainment over by the store at check in. This campsite is also close to a Costco and a 7-11 where you can refill your propane tank easily. I plan to return and stay longer, God willing.

Beautiful day! .....Lots of people, ..... summer is ending for a lot of families....time for the kids to go back to school....parking is tough around here.....BUT so worth it.... Beaches are clean and the water is cool.. temps in the high 70's today. Awesome!!!! 7/31/24 Enjoy!

A nice place to camp. Bathrooms are clean. The folks at the front gate are strict about everything though. Two cars per site max. No visitor parking at all. It's a bummer dogs aren't allowed on the beach in Carlsbad.

We enjoyed our beach day! You have to find parking, but fortunately we got lucky! We parked around Cherry Avenue. This is a nice beach in a nice area of San Diego. Specifically, what I love about this beach is that you can park and you'll have easy access to the beach! The kiddos had fun playing in the water and sand while my partner and I relaxed. We saw dolphins and squirrels too... the kiddos loved it!

What a beautiful beach. The only thing about this particular beach is that there is no parking. The parking is 8 minutes away at Ralph's. If you want to eat at the camp store you get 45 minutes to do so. There is 5 parking spots for the camp store. The campground is a great spot for campers. The view is amazing. They have restrooms at the campground.

    Crowded day at the beach

Very busy in a weekend. Can't check in until 2pm and after, not a minute before. They have live entertainment at the store by the kick for a few hours. Large campsites. Good amount of space away from your neighbors. Lots of campers in bikes and walking, so watch your speeds. Beautiful ocean view and fresh air.

This was our first official beach campsite/campground. We were able to snag one reservation on a Friday night. It was great as it was our trial for future campgrounds with our baby. This location definitely set the bar for future beach campground because of the camp store , the location, cleanliness in the restrooms and showers and obviously 10 out of 10 on the beach views. I was also really surprised that there wasn't mosquitoes in the middle of the night. There was also a lot of security in the golf carts overall we had a great experience and we can't wait to go back and try to snag for the whole weekend. I know the reservations are hard to get but they are 100% worth it. I would also check randomly to see if there's any cancellations. Overall, I highly highly recommend this campsite for regular tenting or RVs. Also they are dog friendly, which is a plus everyone I saw for the most part had their dogs on a leash at their campsite.

Ask the Community - South Carlsbad State Beach

How is cell service on the campgrounds, specifically for AT&T users?

I have not had a problem with AT&T coverage at this location.

I am novice to this but is it okay to park an RV at this campground? size limitations? Hook ups for electric water? I read there is water and dump so that is a good sign.

Yes. You can park an RV. Go to their website for more details and rules.

Can you have bonfires on the beach?

    No. Only propane bbqs.

Is there a public restroom available to use at the beach?

At the North Ponto beach (just south of where Carlsbad Blvd connects to Palomar Airport Rd.) there's a single public restroom. Google maps says N Ponto Beach is closed; but, it's not. Been walking this beach for last several weeks--OPEN!

So if I camp with my dog, is there any doggie day care so I can go to the beach then?

There are dog daycares around. It might be a good time to get your dog cleaned or groom if they don't dig around. The campground is really for day or dry camping here, the last I knew. You can walk your dog along the sea wall too. I just saw… Read more

    How is the parking?

Plenty of side streets, and costal (Coast Hwy 101) parking is most available during weekdays. More fun and better exercise to park farther away (west of the Interstate 5) and bike to the coast. You can find poles or fences to lock your bike up and… Read more

Can anyone in my camp group leave at any time in the night?

Is this the beach with all the smooth rocks?

Yeah. They are smooth and very pretty- almost look like something you can buy at Home Depot 😊

I have a permanent disabled America the Beautiful Pass for entrance to The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Series. Does this pass also allow for free or…

NO! You need to apply for the distinguished veterans pass in California. Then when you get that card. You need to send more paperwork to the state parks and government so they can add it to their website. Then when you go and make reservations, it… Read more

Can I have a dog with me while camping?

    Yes!

    Are there token showers?

Yes, so bring money to get tokens. I think it was $1 per 5 minutes, if I'm recalling correctly.

Looking for a bonfire friendly beach, is this one of them?

    No beach fires allowed

We have friends who would like to visit us during the day not stay overnight. Can they drive into our site and drop stuff off but not pay for the $15 parking fee? They can park on the street.

No visitors right now due to COVID-19

Do you know how many cars are allowed per campsite?

3 license plates allowed per site

How is the cell phone service here?

Not great on the beach, better in the camp.

    Is there fire pits?

Not directly on the beach, but there's an area south of the main beach area near a parking lot that does.

Is there a place to fill our travel trailers fresh water tank within the campground? We'll be arriving with our fresh water tank empty for a 4 night stay.

Yes - there is fresh water and dump stations about half-way up the north campground road

Hi. If you have reservations and arrived after 10 pm are still able to park at campsite?

Yes your name and site should be posted at entrance just be courteous to campers near you as 10 pm is quite time.

I was looking for one that was relatively clean, with not a lot of people, and lots of sand with few rocks. Tamarack State Beach is that place! Tamarack is the kind of beach that would make a nice spot for a picnic or a place to watch the sun set. I did neither of those things -- just stayed for a while to let my children get into the ocean and bury themselves in the sand. But they loved this beach so much that we visited twice during our visit to Carlsbad. There was a lifeguard on duty, set up closer to the parking lot where the majority of the people were. If you walk a little ways away, though, there is no lifeguard and the people are fewer. The parking can be a little limited, and you have to pay to park. There is also some street parking, but that's even more limited. Your best best is to hit the parking lot first and maybe circle a couple of times.

Located between Tamarack Avenue and Carlsbad Village Drive, it's a beautiful stretch of coastline. You'll find a little bit of everything here--families, students, retirees, surfers, and plenty of people just enjoying the ocean. On any given day, I saw swimmers, surfers, kayakers, windsurfers, people fishing or beachcombing with metal detectors. The cement promenade running between Carlsbad Village and Tamarack is especially popular, filled with walkers and joggers. It extends for miles, making it perfect for a longer stroll along the coast. Wildlife added to the experience as well--dolphins offshore, along with pelicans, gulls, and other aquatic life. And beyond the traditional surfers, I even spotted the occasional electric hydrofoil (eFoil), with riders gliding above the water in a way that almost seems to defy gravity. Tamarack offers stunning daytime scenery and some truly memorable sunsets. There are some basic rest rooms facilities available. Tip: If you're heading there on a warm day, plan to arrive early--parking fills up quickly!
