To distinguish between a seal and a sea lion, look at the ears: seals have only ear holes, whereas sea lions have visible, protruding ears. You will find far more seals and sea lions on land than swimming in the water, as they need to spend at least seven to eight hours a day out of the water to rest and regulate their body temperature. What makes La Jolla Cove special is that humans and animals share the beach; people, seals, and sea lions all swim in the same waters. Wildflowers bloom around the beach, and the area is home to a variety of wildlife, including cormorants and seagulls, alongside the seals and sea lions.

The area is reserved and towards a back area of the outdoor courtyards. On the poles, you'll see flags repping the "Bark Park" sign to let you know you're getting close. The area itself is a small yard, a place you can definitely get your dog to do its dookie business in off-leash, but it doesn't hit the dog social aspect of usual dog parks. I wish the area was maintained better because there were no dookie bags refilled (luckily we bring our own) and the trash can was filled to the brim. The trash can lid also needs to be lifted by your hand so you can throw away nature's goodness so I reccommend holding your nose and breath when doing so. Other than that, it's really awesome for a mall to provide this little space, and since it is rare to find that in Los Angeles, my partner and I are very happy and content for the opportunity so we are giving it a 4-stars simply because more maintenance and refills on the supplies was what was missing.

There are a few tables and benches available but they do tend to get full especially on the weekends or during sunset. Parking is scarce to plan ahead. Wedding ceremonies are held here as well as large events such as marathons. If you plan to visit, be sure to check out scheduled events because parking becomes even more difficult during peak times. Always worth the price of admission though. Nothing beats the sounds of the crashing waves and the smell of seals. Cormorants are beautiful too be on the lookout for them cause they like to poop everywhere!

The weather was perfect, sun was out and it was one of those places where it's easy to lose track of time. Sooo soo peaceful ! One disclaimer.. be careful where you walk and where you step. There's a pretty big gap between the grass and the edge of the pavement in one area that is easily hidden. I wasn't paying attention, tripped and scraped both of my knees. Thankfully my ankle ended up being okay after icing it at home. Be careful lol. There's so much space in the park so don't worry about nabbing a great spot. Bring a blanket or beach chair, have a picnic, take in the city views, or just sit and relax for a while. Before you get all the way up the main overlook, there's a large flat grassy area before you enter that looked perfect for birthday parties or small get togethers. Both times I visited were during the day and it wasn't crowded. I did see quite a few people sunbathing lol don't think I've ever seen that at a park before. We love walking along the wide open trails while waiting for the dogs to dry off from swimming. There's also an area with several bowls and water jugs for them to get a drink. It can get crowded at times, especially on the weekends, so we usually go on a weekday and grab lunch at a nearby dog friendly restaurant afterwards. There is plenty of free parking, no bathrooms, maybe a port-a-potty around. Totally worth checking out.

In the fenced dog park, we've had the good fortune of nearly always coming across other friendly dogs & dog guardians (with only one exception that happened a few years ago) so I feel like that's been pretty great for us socially. The terrain at Fiesta island is slightly rocky, hard packed sand and looser sand closer to the shoreline. I usually wear flip flops if I'm going to play with Cali in the water, but sneakers or trail shoes can also be practical here to avoid stubbed toes on the steeper inclines. We can easily get close to 10,000 steps just walking around the perimeter of the dog area. The walking path for all of Fiesta Island is 4.2 miles! In the springtime, the dog park has experienced wildflower superblooms which are magnificent to witness. There are a few benches under the copse of trees, but otherwise, if you want to sit, it'll be on sand or a chair or blanket you brought. Make sure you bring plenty of drinking water! It can get very hot, and there's no public potable water in the park. Recreationally, I have also had the pleasure of riding a horse at Fiesta as well. So much fun! Fiesta does mean party after all, right? I've seen all sorts of other recreational things happening at Fiesta outside of the dog park area, too... kayaking, jet skiing, swimming, grilling, chilling, and enjoying the water. Of course, there are designated fire pits! I've also seen a little 4x4 action on the sand, boating, kiteboarding, and model airplane flying... Fiesta really does have something for everyone. Notes: It can get very busy and crowded in the summer though so I avoid it on days when I know everyone is going to be out! Portapotties here and there... not that many though! Even street parking was full so I circled around couple times until I found one of the little league parents getting ready to leave. I got a little confused about where the dog park was because there's no fenced area. I asked one of the ladies sitting at the bench and she pointed at the picnic tables further in the park and said that's the dog park. There were only two dogs there but Gibbs had a blast playing with them in the unfenced area. The grass was in relatively good shape and the area was pretty clean. The only down side was there's no water fountain for the dogs. There was a bucket of water probably provided by some nice dog owner. I brought my own water bottle for Gibbs but the other dog owner didn't have water for her dog so we shared the one I had. Overall it's pretty nice for the dogs and for me because the view there was nice too.
