The Ellen Browning Scipps Park is beautiful! Parking is relatively difficult, but totally worth it! Ellen Browning Scripps Park has a lot of grassy areas and trees in the middle of the park. You'll also find a lot of spots with benches throughout the park. There are a few open areas where you can setup picnics too! There are a lot of seagulls in the area, so be careful! Along the park, there are outstanding walking paths that overlook the ocean. You'll see Seals and Sea Lions! There are so many scattered throughout the area! There are plenty of shopping areas near Ellen Browning Scripps Park and restaurants! If you're visiting La Jolla, I'd highly recommend stopping by Ellen Browning Scripps Park! We had such a wonderful experience, just hanging out on the bench overlooking the ocean!

HEADED, down to LA JOLLA CONCOURS D'ELEGANCE 2024!!!!

We attended for the SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, the La Jolla Concours D'Elegance!!! It was wonderful from start to finish!!! We started off again with breakfast at Harry's Coffee Shop, but this time we took a LYFT, there and back. It was much better than trying to find a valet stand close to the entrance!!! I walked 3/4 of a mile, seeing all sorts of historic, old valuable automobiles!!! Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Ferraris, Mercedes AND MORE. EVEN A CLASSIC BRONCO!!! It was a cool, OVERCAST DAY. We got a brief air show, including a COAST GUARD HELICOPTER. We even saw a yacht in the ocean. When we left, I needed the assistance of a GOLF CART to get to the top of the hill, and I asked a certain female in charge at the front. SHE TOOK MATTERS IN HAND, and walking up and down found one for me. THIS WAS A GODSEND!!! For someone who has a disability and a walker, AND MORE GOING ON!!!

I used to come down here all of the time when I was going to UCSD. These days, I find myself here because this park has been the venue for the La Jolla Half Marathon. While it's a very beautiful park with a great view of the cove and the Pacific Ocean, parking around the area can be challenging to find! The surrounding streets are also rather narrow and there's almost always a ton of foot and vehicular traffic.

What better way to mark my 800th review than to write about one of my favorite parks -- Ellen Browning Scripps Park in La Jolla CA. It is small, but its nearly 6 acres of open green space at the rocky beach edge is magical. Located along Coast Blvd at the base of Girard Avenue, adjacent to La Jolla Cove, this is one of the most beautiful parks in La Jolla ... and all of San Diego. I've come here for over 50 years, first as a tourist and now as a resident for the last two decades. It is a perfect place for picnicing on the grassy open space, sitting and reading, and generally enjoying the view and sea life on the rocks. My wife and I enjoy strolling along the coast walk here, stopping to take in the views. Scripps Park is one of the best places to watch sunset ... or King Tide or the fury of a Pacific storm. The park is also a popular place for weddings and large family gatherings. A noteworthy Scripps Park feature are its Monterey Cypress trees, which were planted here when this was La Jolla Park over a century ago. One of the largest of them was "The Lorax" tree, so named because it inspired the Dr. Seuss' book. Sadly, we saw its grounded mass after it fell down in 2019. What a loss. Finally, you'll notice three gazebo-looking structures along the coast walk. These are La Jolla's famous belvederes -- structures built originally in the late 1890s or early 1900s to provide semi-sheltered places for enjoying the park and ocean ... or just sitting and reading, which we like to do.

A really nice ocean park, overlooking the bluffs of La Jolla, with some picnic tables. It has a lot of bald spots, but also large areas of lush, green grass with a few trees. There are also bench facing the ocean on the walkway surrounding the park. Nice to have this public open space on such valuable land. And it's close enough to the cove to hear the sea lions roaring.

9-29-2021 After breakfast we drove and parked along this park. We were in search of baby seal sightings. Walk through the impressive picture worthy gnarled and twisted trees as if a giant decided to do some creative bonsai pruning with them. We never found Dr. Seuss' Lorax tree although it's supposed to be here. Come to see the baby seals. They are fearless of the perilous wave action and sound like gremlins. So endearing.

Ellen Browning Scripps Park is better known as the green space that is adjacent to La Jolla Cove. Parking is first come, first serve in the limited curbside spots along Coast Blvd and neighboring side streets. The area is popular for artists, picnics, outdoor exercise classes, and other leisurely activities. At various times of the year, there will be charity events (e.g. Concours d'Elegance, walk-a-thons) that will use the park as a base or station. I took some time on a recent weekend to wander the premises and enjoy the views of the ocean. You get the natural breezes and odors coming off the water. The latter can be quite repugnant during certain months when the bird guano accumulates too much without being washed away. The stench can have an adverse effect on customers dining al fresco at the restaurants near the cove. There has been ongoing construction to upgrade the lifeguard station in one of the areas where scuba divers and swimmers can enter the water. The green screen fencing looks unsightly but over the long term, the capital improvements will be worth the time and money spent. If you are an out-of-town visitor, this park and the cove should be on the list of destinations to visit while in San Diego.

Sunset or sunrise. Morning, noon, midday or evening dusk. Rain, gray day or sunshine. There is no wrong time to visit this simplistic ethereal park. Every visitor and local should pay their respects. One of the top five parks in San Diego. Spacious green land mass good for volleyball, soccer, picnic, naps, holding hands, spending time with nature, reading, photographs, kiss and make-up, or get hitched. Functional parks along on an authentic coast line rarely exist. Beach waves, the aroma of salt, or seal, or wind may caress the nostrils. Do you know who Ellen is? She's considered the dreamer of plants throughout San Diego county. Therefore this park has interesting tree formations that do provide shade, first come first served. The only thing you would need when you visit this park and it's surrounding area are: 1. An optimistic attitude; 2. A zest for life; 3. Cash and a card, the ice cream man takes cash I bring my hotspot, tent, laptop, and vibrations and dig the day here. Parking can be a challenge. Not a big deal because the area is surrounded by beauty, shops and restaurants within blocks of any direction. No kid apparatus', very few benches and toilets are 10-15 minute walk aaargh!

Beautiful park along the coast, great place to see wildlife. We saw tons of sea lions, seals, seagulls and pelicans. You can walk down steps to get closer to the sea lions and seals. It was fun seeing them up close and personal, observing them interact and move around. Shell beach is only a 3 min walk away, and Children's Pool is only a 6 min walk away. I recommend checking out both. There's plenty of street parking, and lots restaurants and art galleries nearby.

Wow! Scripps Park is located on the cliffs of the LA Jolla coast and is quite possibly the nicest park ever.

"THE LORAX DIES. Who will speak for the trees? The Lorax will speak for the trees for the trees have no tongues." Source: Google

The park is named after an American journalist and philanthropist who is credited for the founding of several major institutions in SoCal, including the Birch Aquarium, La Jolla Woman's Club, The Bishop's School, Torrey Pines State Reserve, Scripps Memorial Hospital, Scripps Institution of Oceanography ...and far too many others to name ...and not enough room in this review to describe the magnitude this woman had on the world. She had a giving outlook about life and specifically, gave a tremendous amount to the town of La Jolla. She called it a "woman's town", and had a home built there for her by San Diego Architect Irving J. Gill. The home had a Mid-Century Modern flair to it. He later designed other commissions for her. Ellen's family first settled in Illinois when they emigrated from London. She and Brother E.W. Scripps were the creators of America's largest chain of newspapers in the Midwest, and later, in California. It's interesting to note that "Ellen Browning Scripps was the only one of her ten siblings to attend college. She studied science and mathematics at Knox College in Galesburg, IL, one of the few educational institutions to admit women, even if it did not yet grant college degrees. She graduated in 1859 with a certificate from the Female Collegiate Department. Afterwards, she returned to Rushville, Illinois, to teach in a one-room schoolhouse." (cited Wikipedia.) "By the 1920s, Ellen Browning Scripps was worth an estimated $30 million (or $3.5 billion in 2016 dollars), most of which she gave away."[4] (cited Wikipedia.) She never married. Today (June 18, 2019), we came to see the aftermath of The 'Lorax Tree' (Truffula), located in Ellen Browning Scripps Park. The Monterey Cypress tree fell last week and it is suggested that perhaps termites may be responsible for the demise of The Lorax. It was an iconic cypress tree most everyone knew by name because it reportedly was Dr. Seuss's inspiration for the movie, 'The Lorax'. The Lorax was released by Universal Pictures on March 2, 2012, on what would have been Seuss's 108th Birthday. Was the movie a prophetic warning of poor forest management? Dr. Seuss was an environmentalist and certainly was concerned about the overbuilding in La Jolla. 'The Lorax' tree was estimated to be only 80-100 years old when it fell last week. Monterey cypress trees can live up to 600 years and it is notable one is recorded to have lived 1,000 years. Coincidentally, like Ellen Browning Scripps, Dr. Seuss also had a home in La Jolla and passed from this earth in 1991 at age 87. So a new tree will be planted. Or perhaps with all the rain we have had this Spring, a new tree will sprout from the old. But it's sad. It's sad because ...if you know the movie, it's just ironic. "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." - Dr. Seuss Tragically ironic.

#66 for 2018 When you're done shopping and eating, come down to this park for a leisurely stroll. It is a well maintained grassy park. Take your shoes to walk on the fresh, moist grass. Get grounded. However, the restrooms need lots of work. It is nice play ball, picnic, walk, look at the Pacific Ocean. What many do come for, especially the tourist, is the flock load of seals and beautiful, vibrant sunsets. There are many seagulls and their pungent smells may get to those who do not have a strong nose. For those with enough experience, snorkeling and scuba diving can be fun. Other water activities are there too. If you do park in a garage, be aware of the hours before pulling in. We found out they can close early before sunset.

Getting down in to La Jolla and this area can be a hassle, it is crowded, touristy, always busy but that is because of the great views and all of the things to do in the area. You might get lucky and find some free parking, but there garages less than a 1/2 mile away that are $5-$10 for the day. The park is great. It is usually crowded but that is because of what is has to offer, its central location, amazing views of the ocean, nature, seals and sea lions, picnic tables, bathrooms, etc. It also has the lorax tree which is on the list of top Instagram photo spots for San Diego. There were people playing sports, reading, relaxing, sleeping, picnicking, taking photos, riding bikes, walking, looking at the sea lions & seals, etc. This is a perfect example of what San Diego has to offer. Amazing views, the ocean, nature, fit people. This park is a great way to just take in the ocean and everything it has to offer. Definitely a place to visit if you are in the la Jolla area. You won't be disappointed. On your way down to the park you can go to sunny Jim cave and for $5 walk down some steps to a sea level view of the ocean. There is also plenty of shopping from touristy to upscale. There are plenty of restaurants and dessert places. There is something for everyone.

(There is a good amount of parking, but keep in mind that it can get crowded on weekends.) From locals exercising to tourists taking photos and smiling to bougie picnic setups on the grass to sniffalot pups enjoying themselves... there's room for all to peacefully enjoy the incredible view at beautiful Cuvier Park.
