La Jolla is so beautiful! It is so fun to make a family affair of visiting the tide pools! Low tide exposes such beautiful sea life! You can find and see sea urchins, star fish, crabs & yes even octopuses! Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, it is easy to slip on the slippery rocks. Street parking is available, depending where you park there are public bathrooms. We will continue to visit the tide pools for years to come!

My husband and I took a quick trip out to San Diego in early April. We decided to stop by La Jolla Tide Pools during our visit on a Thursday mid-morning. Parking was relatively difficult, but we were able to find one, parallel parking, near the La Jolla Tide Pools. It was slightly cloud and around 58 degrees while visiting the Tide Pools. Luckily, we had our jackets and hats. There are a few stair steps you can go down to get to the beach area, but there are a myriad of rocky cliffs that you can climb down. La Jolla Cove was amazing. We saw so many Sea Lions, and a surprise, there was a historic event of 100s of Pelicans there when we visited! It was beautiful. Climbing on some of the rocks with the ride pool, you can see a lot of sea anemones and crabs living in them. Some of the rocks are covered with the sea anemones, so much sure to wear some close-toe shoes with a good grip! We had so much fun and was one of the best parts of our trip at San Diego!

Loved coming here. If you want to see the tide pools, be sure to come during low tide - you can check online to find the schedule. There is a lot of street parking around the area. I found a spot pretty close on a Sunday, and there's some nice entrances to get down to the beach. It was relaxing to walk around and hear the ocean. I loved spotting sea life! It was so fun. Just be careful as there are slippery spots due to algae and all that! Definitely come!

Beautiful beach. Used to come here wen I was a kid w my grandpa, hasn't changed much at all. Just alot more busier. Water is Chrystal clear. There r tide pools to check out. U can rent kayaks, or go paddleboarding to the caves. There r an abundance amount of sea lions, n birds. This beach will not disappoint. One of my favs.

Fun little beach to walk and look around. There wasn't much to see in the pools, however the ride was coming in so that may have been the problem. Parking wasn't too hard, But I could see how it'd be a problem during more busy times Of day.

I'm always fascinated by the natural beauty of the area i travel in. The tide pools is no exception. Google the high tide low tide schedule to make sure you arrive to see what you want. Parking is tight since it is mostly a residential area, but you should see this if you have time.

Some of the most beautiful views in San Diego. Usually pretty busy and easy access. Parking is a challenge so park about a mile away and walk down the coast. Several hills in the area. Tide pools can be super slipper so many people go barefoot.

If you like tide pools, this is a great place to visit and explore! There's so much to see and it's so cool to explore La Jolla ocean life. It is so gorgeous! You should definitely come out and visit soon! There are so many cute little creatures in the tide pools plus you can hear the seals barking! The entire area is magnificent!!

Even though I'd visited La Jolla numerous times, I had never been to the tide pools until yesterday. We came for the seals -- and saw lots of them! The place was quite crowded on a Saturday afternoon; moreover, there were scores of annoying pop-up food and other commercial sands not far from the shore. Nonetheless, all the human activity didn't make a dent in all the pleasure that we got from watching the other species. If you're in town, make sure to check out the tide pools! Pro tip: there was no trouble finding two-hour parking quite close to the shore, even on a busy day.

Definitely go when it's sunny! I went on a very cloudy day with high tides which was a bit scary. Kinda slippery as well so make sure to wear correct shoes!

Ask the Community - La Jolla Tide Pools

What's the best time of day to go?

Best time to visit is when there's Low Tide, meaning the water waves are farther from shore as them come in, therefore you can adventurously explore the area and see sea versions flora and fauna without being interrupted by the crashing waves.

The anemone here are smaller than their Mexican relatives, maybe because people are poking them so much.

Now in my 50s, I go less now -- maybe once a year, but on a recent visit we enjoyed a nice long walk from end-to-end and back and were lucky enough to catch some spectacular marine life in the tide pools near the pier. LOTS TO EXPLORE On one end of the beach, you will find the Marine Room restaurant and La Jolla Beach and Tennis club, along with mansions on the cliff edge, while kayakers from nearby tour and rental shops get safety briefings and enter the water. At the other end, you'll find Scripps Pier, Scripps Institute of Oceanography and if you're there at the right time, numerous tide pools with bright orange starfish and sea anemone. In between, you'll find grassy Kellogg Park, a tot lot, showers and restrooms, sinks and hand dryers. LOCALS AND TOURISTS The beach is about a mile long and comfortably deep in low tide. It attracts an international crowd, families, couples, surfers, teenagers, lovers, sun-worshipers, surfers, joggers, strollers, you name it. WHAT WOULD MAKE IT 5 STARS? There's a limited parking lot immediately adjacent to the beachfront, but I usually have to find parking on the street, not an easy task in peak season. As with all beaches in San Diego, it lacks vendors along the beach, so if you need a shop or get hungry or thirsty, either bring your own or seek out one of the clothing stores, restaurants or cafes along nearby Avenida de la Playa. La Jolla Shores is one of San Diego's nicest beaches in my opinion. Helpful?

The beach is really clean with most beach goers carrying there picnic trash back up. Volley ball games usually take place in the summer. The views are not to be missed. For the shy person the RIGHT side as you climb down the cliff facing the water is for those who prefer bathing suits, Speedos & bikinis. To the LEFT side of the beach facing the water is clothing optional. Usually its a bit farther. Great that nobody bothers you & its a safe space for that all over tan. Sometimes beverages are sold on the beach discreetly, however, I'd recommend bringing your own & lots of water. I wanted to be in this area but knew that the parking down by Torrey Pines Beach can sometimes be a hit or miss so I looked on the map and found Black's Beach trailhead and took a gamble. I had about 2 hours before it was going to rain, so this trail seemed doable in the time I had. I parked at the farther end of the gravel lot, not many cars parked here. And where I saw the danger sign, I started my hike down. It was a little steep going down, and if it was a wet day, I wouldn't venture down this path. Wear sturdy shoes, but I can tell you the views are so worth doing this short, steep hike down and back up. Once you get down to the beach, its just endless sand and beach and just gorgeous. I wish I had had more time to spend here, Ill definitely come back on a summer's day. I really enjoyed randomly discovering this trail, its about 45min down and up, definitely worth it for the views!
