Scripps Beach is one of my favorite spots for a morning walk. I came here before a doctor's appointment and it was the perfect way to start the day. Early in the morning it's not too crowded, which makes it ideal if you want some peace while getting your steps in. I recommend walking from one end to the other and then heading inland toward the nearby coffee shops it makes for a really nice flow. One thing I really appreciate is that there are multiple bathrooms available, which isn't always the case at beaches. It's also noticeably calmer and cleaner compared to some other beach areas around San Diego, which adds to the overall experience. Great views, fresh ocean air, solid walking path, and an easy place to rack up steps without the chaos. Highly recommend for early AM walks. read more

Lots of people love going to take pictures under Scripps Pier, but overall a beautiful beach with a laid back vibe. You can also see the paragliders from Torrey Pines flying overhead! read more

One of my favorite beaches! Love how quiet it is as compared to being in La Jolla Shores itself. I love the easy parking and then walking towards the left until the Scripps pier. So many beautiful photo opportunities just because the landscape is so gorgeous. No wonder many weddings take place here. It is so pleasant also to spend some hours reading a book in a more quiet scenery, so very recommended for people looking for a somewhat 'deserted' beach. read more

Gorgeous views walking down from the public street next to the college campus. We were able to take photos at the bridges and the wooden decks on the way here. We found a viewpoint beside the pier-- which we thought would be open to the public but the gate was locked. Looking down, we saw people walking freely barefoot and the beach was very beautiful with soft sand and calm waves. Very scenic area with lots of wind so be prepared to wear jackets! You can also head under the pier bridge to take photos as well. read more

With all the hype of plankton and bioluminescent waves, we decided to experience it for ourselves late at night. We selected this beach above others based on people's reviews to avoid crowds. The parking was bearable and we were able to park close to the side of the beach. Truly amazing. The beach wasn't crowded and there were ppl practicing social distancing and wearing masks. Several ppl taking pictures and some managed to get in the water. We were able to capture some great pictures! read more

Review #287 - 2019 Of all the trips I've made to San Diego, this one was probably the busiest one because I wanted to go everywhere and do everything. I find that my time has become even more precious, as I get older, so I try to do as much as I possibly can with my kids before they get older and refuse to spend time with me. We showed up around 2:30 PM on Sunday, October 13th, and were able to find a parking spot in their free lot, even though it was super crowded. My daughter loves the beach so I made it a point to visit La Jolla & walk to the pier at Scripps Beach. I actually had my own selfish reason for wanting to walk to the pier, because I wanted that money shot that I've seen on everyone's social media page. Sadly, my 17-year old son is not a beach lover so he refused to walk all the way to the pier with me because he had his expensive Jordans on. I had to remind him whose money bought those shoes ;) Luckily, a nice man was sweet enough to snap a few shots of my daughter & I, but I won't be posting them as I like to keep my daughter's photos private. This beach is absolutely beautiful! When I first showed up, it looked gloomy & felt pretty chilly so I was only planning to walk around for about half an hour at most. We ended up walking until 4:15 PM. That's a lot of minutes for me, when it comes to walking at the beach. The water seemed cold when I first put my feet in, but it got warmer the longer I continued to walk. The sand was super fine! We saw so many pretty colorful seashells wash up to shore. At first, I thought they were tiny rocks, but my daughter picked one up & realized they were seashells. Such an awesome place to spend the afternoon! To top it off, my daughter ran into two young ladies all dressed up as Anna & Elsa for a costume party! Talk about making a little girl's day at the beach even more memorable! read more

I can't believe I have never been over here before and living nearby for so long. Parking on the street is easy and free early in the morning. Not very crowded on the beach when it is early and cold, but some crazy surfers were going into the water without a wetsuit. Went on a Saturday morning when sun was just coming up, got some great photos. There are great views of La Jolla and surrounding areas. You can get some great sunrise and sunset pics too. The Pier is locked but if you are lucky enough to know someone who can let you up there, you can get some great photos from a different perspective. There are some grassy areas and picnic spots nearby to enjoy a quick bite to eat. There is also a cafe nearby. read more

Really nice beach just a bit north of La Jolla. Has a nice grass area for picnicking, relatively decent bathrooms, and really large sandy area for laying out along the coast. I find this beach to be slightly less crowded than a lot of other popular beaches in the area. The water is pretty clean and has minimal seaweed. Although, there were a lot of pesky flies attracted to the washed-up weeds, but it wasn't too bad. Street parking wasn't too hard to find, you might just have to walk 5 minutes to get to the beach, but it's not bad at all. They also have surf lessons too. read more

Scripps Beach is just a really nice local feeling beach. It is quite popular due to the nature of it being next to some of the SD University's campus as well as the Scripps Pier being more and more popular. Great to just come and chill, take some pictures and just enjoy a beautiful sunset. I brought water shoes and it was definitely worth the pack. Bring a nice pack of beer, towel, kick back and enjoy that beautiful so-cal weather. That's living the life : ) The pier is more than enough reason to come and visit. It's like something out of a movie. The repetition of the columns and the length of it is pretty visually captivating. It's like inception at it's finest lol. If you do come during golden hour, just expect loads of other photographers and shoots going on cause it's no secret. You'll have to be aggressive and wait your turn for a shot but I would say everyone is pretty cordial and respecting of not hogging the location. There is no parking lot you can park at, however the closest parking you can do is on La Jolla Shore Dr along the street. It's where those beautiful bonsai-esque trees are and in the evenings there should be no restrictions. Just check the signs but we parked here 2 days and it was fine. There are loads of other people parking here as well. It's a short 5 minute walk downhill towards the beach, just find your way down. read more

I came here on 7/19/20. It was my friend's birthday and it was my first time here. I liked the beach. I came here on Sunday and it wasn't too crowded but it's good view of the beach, the ocean. The beach appeared to look very clean. I was able to get some good pics of the beach. read more

Scripps Beach - Pier - Beaches Near Me - San Diego, California

I am specifically reviewing a certain part of La Jolla Shores beach which is located between Black's Beach and La Jolla Shores Beach proper. You can access it by turning off La Jolla Shores Blvd., west onto El Paseo Grande and hope and pray there is some available parking. Stay out of the Scripps Oceanography parking lot unless you go to UCSD & have their parking sticker. If not-I can guarantee you a ticket from the ravenous UCSD parking enforcement patrol! There is a steep flight of stairs that will take you down to that part of La Jolla Shores beach that is right near the Scripp's Pier and where surfing is allowed. What is so nice about this portion of the beach is the lifeguard tower that is right there and that it is usually A LOT LESS CROWDED that the rest of La Jolla Shores. The Lifeguard tower keeps a good eye out because it is always telling the surfers to stay out of the swimming area and the swimmers to stay out of the surfer's area of the water. I tried to swim around the Scripp's Pier in preparation for Surfrider's Paddle for Clean Water around the OB Pier, but there is just too many wires, lines, cables and all kinds of stuff hanging from the Pier and possibly snagging me, so I gave up that idea. Curious types can use binoculars to gaze down the northern stretch of beach towards swimsuit-optional Black's Beach & see what's cookin? I enjoy the swimming on this side also because the kid factor is not so heavy-not that I don't like kids at the beach. Just that they are all over down at the other end of the Shores & get in your way with their boogie-boards. Not so on this end by Scripp's Beach. The other day I went out way far past the breakers and I was swimming around when I saw a pair of fins! A feeling of dread overtook me before I glimpsed a second pair of fins and realized that SHARKS don't travel in pairs! It was a small school of dolphins cruising by and they were CLOSE! I could hear their little clicks and whistles they make and it was SUCH AN AWESOME MOMENT! I always tried to swim with the dolphins when I used to go to Coronado and Imperial Beaches, but those elusive mammals always took off before I could get up near them NOT AT SCRIPP'S BEACH--they were right there and sooo amazing! Yelpers who wish for some space on the La Jolla beaches and in the water might wish to check out this nice little corner of the Shores and enjoy the ambience that Scripp's Beach offers the discerning beach-goer. read more

Living in LA, I come across a lot of dirty beaches where it's not uncommon to come home with rashes or some kind of wood stuck in your feet. It has made me to really not like going to the beach. The water would be filthy and people just liter all over. However, a group of us helped my boyfriend's sister move out of her apartment at UCSD and we came here. What a change in cleanliness! For one, I cna take my flip flops off and walk in the sand without worrying about something pinching me. Secondly, the water is nice and blue, not murky and full of questionable items. There's waves and quite a lot of people who came for surfing. Parking was by street which wasn't too hard to find though the road is narrow and has sharp turns, so drive carefully please. Overall, a calm pit stop on the way home from SD. read more

If you're not into crowds at the beach, then this place is perfect for you! You can say that it's somewhat secluded just because the area to sit/lay at the beach is smaller. But it's still a great beach with gorgeous views! Even when I'm not in the water, I still enjoy this beach very much. There's such a nice and relaxing vibe to this beach and everyone seems to be so chill. Overall, this is a great beach with beautiful views! Its perfect for your long walks on the beach! read more

I've always seen the pier from a distance at La Jolla shores but I never actually went to the pier. I've been checking out piers whenever I can lately because I love the under the pier photos i've been taking so I decided to go here after lunch today. Glad I did. It's beautiful beach for a nice walk. You have a closer view of the cliffs and you can still have a view of la jolla. It's perfectly situated in the middle. Love San Diego and the perfect weather. Not that crowded in the winter but the water is freezing. It's just nice to sit and relax for a bit. read more

Awesome spot. Just walk along the beach from La Jolla Shores or one of the closer access points. It tends to be quieter than La Jolla Shores just because of the walk. Great views, and a beautiful stretch of beach to frolic along. Sunsets near the pier are hard to beat with the view of La Jolla in the background. When the wind is right you'll see paragliders playing above you from the Torrey Pines Glider Port. Loads of surfers out there all the time. read more

Ahhh man I love this place. It's pretty chill, surfers mostly, and your average folks. There is no parking lot so most people go down the street where there is a parking lot. There is some street parking if it's not busy, but on the weekend the UCSD Scripps parking lot is available. Going to the beach is great here and it's not crazy packed and touristy, so you should enjoy it. read more

Best clean beaches you will ever see in all of San Diego!! This beach has got amazing clear water where you can see such beautiful sea life in the water! Everything from bait fish swimming, surf perch and even maybe some beautiful leopard sharks. Be sure to check the tides for the beaches because this can be amazing for you and your family!!! Just north of the Scripps Pier you can see some amazing tidepools!! I've been around and seen everything from sea stars, lobsters and anemones. Scripps Beach, aka La Jolla Shores depending on how far you stroll is one of my favorite SD beaches. Runs neck n neck with Torrey Pines. If you park in the lot at Kellogg Park, that's where majority of people lay out and where all the lifeguard stations are. I sometimes just park north of that on the street in the residential area and then you can take the stairs down to beach. I like to stroll north towards the pier, it's way less crowded up that way, and if you're with kids it's fun to check out the sea life clinging to the legs of the pier. Then a little further up and you're at the tide pools. If you're a visitor to SD set aside at least one morning, bring your coffee, and do this. It'll be the most relaxing thing you do!! read more

If you don't like crowed beaches with wayyyyyy too many tourists in things and big umbrellas harshin your view then this is the spot for you! I love love love this beach. It's away from all the craze and a more intimate setting. For sure a nice and relaxing environment where you can take in the Rays and I joy the beautiful beach in a peaceful and enjoyable environment. Parking can be a bit nutty at times but it's a great spot for sure. read more

This is a beautiful beach to spend the day on. There are a lot of families and friends here soaking in the rays. There are not too many food options in walking distance so bring a picnic. If you do want a restaurant experience, Caroline's is right on the water (great view and great food). There are often weddings at the Scripps building right near the pier so its fun to see those happening. No dogs and street parking can be tricky, so get here early. read more

I love this place, how can you rate it any lower than a 5 star. This is the spot for surfers and students and locals. Located north of la jolla shores. If you have saltwater Aquarium in your house you should stop by here, they have free filtered saltwater... You don't have to buy salt and mix it I come here once ever week or two to get my saltwater for my fish tank. Ima check in from now on to show this place some love and attention. read more

All newbie/moderate surfers, this is the place to go! This beach is between La Jolla Shores and Blacks beach and the wave breaks are very surf friendly. It's also a great place to boogie board, tan, relax, read a book, etc. A CON about this place is that this portion of the beach is kind of secluded off on it's own so there are no lifeguards. You'd have to run halfway to La Jolla shores if something happens. My roommate got hit by his surfboard this past summer and started to massively bleed on his forehead. He ended up having to run all the way to shores to the lifeguard to get it bandaged (yes, even with blood dripping down his forehead). However, those are the extreme cases. The people here are very friendly and everyone is willing to help if you are in need! I got wrapped in a bundle of seaweed once and was being tossed around by the wave with my surfboard. A guy helped me out, without me even screaming or asking! All the surfers here are nice and willing to share their wave. Unlike other beaches, whether you are a newbie or an expert, all surfers seem to be welcomed here!! read more
