I took a class out at Milton Reimers Ranch (beautiful) and had the best time! Randy taught me the language of "on-belay", as well as taught me the knot tying and even to belay him while he went up to set a rope. Such an incredible experience! It is definitely challenging, both mentally and physically. It was such an adventure and since it was just myself in the "class" he let me advance to the levels I was comfortable at. I doubt there is a better guide out there that knows how to have as much fun as Randy, while always keeping safety first.

Learn to lead Sport & Learn to lead Trad were both great courses that helped me gain confidence while doing so safely. Having completed these two courses, it has opened up SO MUCH climbing ability in the US and abroad. I feel confident and competent. It is great to learn from a qualified guide, like Randy, so I can help get more friends into the sport and have confidence that I am passing down correct and safe practices to them. Randy is a great guide with tons of experience and all the certifications that make a new comer feel confident in their instructor. A perfect mixture of teacher, mentor, story teller, and someone who will help you push your limits (if that is what you want). I will continue to use Austin Ascents to build upon my Rock Climbing knowledge and look forward to completing more courses. Next up, Multi-pitch climbing!

Honestly, that's bad business practice. You're basically asking people to pay $30 upfront, risking them deciding not to stay--and potentially losing out on a full monthly membership. It's a tiny fee for them, but it's a huge turn-off for anyone genuinely interested. If a business can't trust people enough to offer a real trial experience, I'm not willing to hand over my money. There are plenty of gyms that actually want to earn your membership, not scare it away. No thanks.

I like that there is an on-site coffee shop and food truck, and plenty of outdoor space to relax, in addition to additional gym spaces upstairs and downstairs. The front desk staff always seems very helpful -- if you're new to the gym, they'll happily give you a tour, and the introduction to climbing with a harness was very helpful. The gym has a variety of self-belay climbs that you can do, which is what we've stuck to so far. I do find the animal-themed ratings a little difficult to understand. Also, I would say most of the climbs--even the "sloth" rated ones--are a little more challenging that I'm used to (both for belay and bouldering). For our birthday party, they actually reserved the entire kids' room just for our party, which I thought was a fantastic deal. The kids' room is definitely not just for beginners, either. They patiently gave the group a lesson, and we had a dedicated guide for our entire party (he even gave latecomers their own lessons). The kids got to try pretty much all of the climbs, which took most of the 2 hours, before they got tired of the room and wanted to venture into the larger gym space. We were able to bring our own decorations, food, and beverages, and they supplied all the plates, forks, and tablecloths. Memberships and single day passes are a little on the pricey side, so I'm not sure how often we'll come back, but it is a really nice space, and I'm happy to have it available in our community.

We got a day pass for $28 each and since it was our first time we got free rental shoes. I didn't have time to check out the sauna, but it is included in the pass and I peaked inside and it was very nice. They also have a full gym and classes that are all included in your pass! We only spent 30 minutes there then went next door for food and coffee, but I went back after and some people were there for hours! I think the enjoyment level here depends on what you want to experience.

At the beginning of the school year we came every Saturday, but as schools gotten busier we havent been coming so frequently. It is the most affordable bouldering place ive ever been, they provide bandaids when you get scraped, have very attentive service, inclusive staff and events, and very kindly use sustainable paper towels at the handwashing station with high-quality lotion available after. They always provide chalk and shoes and I think the routes are super fun and also inclusive! I also like having the opportunity to use the other gym amenities with the daytime pass, and it is all kept very clean. One time I came in with a sprained ankle and used two punches because I thought my ankle wouldnt get in the way too much, but after a few minutes I realized it would and I didnt want to stay. They refunded my punches so now I have them for another time! I love this place and have brought almost everyone I know here with me. I would definitely recommend it.

Since I'm also afraid of heights, ropes courses are a good way to get a dose of this. The Georgetown Challenge Course is designed for team-building exercises, so you can't just go by yourself and have fun, unfortunately. But it's a great place to go for corporate, club or team events. I went in February with about 15 people from Hill Country Outdoors, an outdoors, sports and social club. We started the morning doing some silly but surprisingly fun games on the ground. Then, we got to the good stuff. There's a large number of activities that you can do here, from climbing up a pole to crossing high wires or logs... there's actually more than you can do in a day (you talk over the activities when you book, but can change them during the day). All are safe, as you are belayed, but also scary, since they're up high. I think I had fun, as I'd go back, but whenever I do these things I'm always asking myself why I thought it was a good idea, it's never fun until it's over. The downside to this place is that you are actively belayed, it's not like the Cypress Canopy challenge course where you're always hooked in and can do stuff yourself. That's also a plus if you're actually doing a team-building exercise, of course. None of the activities require you to be in super shape... if you can climb a ladder, you can do pretty much anything here. Though you may not really want to ;) If you're looking for something different to do, get a group together and try this place!

For me the answer to this quandary is rock climbing as it is an affordable way to stay in tip-top shape and each experience you have when climbing is unique. Moreover, rock climbing provides a full-body work-out. It helps to build lean muscle mass across the entire body, including forearms, biceps, shoulders, back, core, glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves. The Mesa Rim Austin affords those who are seeking it an opportunity to get in shape, challenge themselves mentally and physically and get customized lessons for those who are just starting out. What's more is that this location also has general work-out equipment like ellipticals, stationary bicycles, free weights and treadmills. For the price of a monthly membership of $25.00, you can climb and have access to rock walls and gear as well as work out equipment and a dry sauna (that's a steal). The staff here is helpful and offers training for those new to rock climbing and provides guidance when you get 'stuck' and/or are unsure of how to maneuver. The facility is always clean and uncluttered with debris and has plenty of room for large groups of people so you won't feel claustrophobic when here. In coming here, I have also gained a new community as this location has a tight-knit community, making it easy to meet new people, find climbing partners, and form new friendships. If you can swing it and add rock climbing to at least 2 days per week to your health regimen, you won't regret it. #bewellcentraltexas

I will say that the front desk staff usually seems very busy, and compared to another climbing gym we frequent, we didn't feel super welcome (might have been because we came with a Groupon?). On our first visit, I had to ask where everything was -- there was no orientation or offer to show us around. I noticed that others were getting orientations, so this might be hit or miss. The bouldering space itself is quite spacious and has lots of different levels of challenge suitable for both kids and adults. There was lots of padding, and I really like the central "rock" island where you can actually climb on top of it. I would say I feel a little intimidated to visit for more than the bouldering, given the fact that the staff doesn't seem overly welcoming and friendly.

I saw this company on Groupon. The promotion was for a "six-hour rock-climbing tour for two" for…read more$99, and it was listed as 60% off a value of $250. Before purchasing, I checked the company website to see what kind of tour they offered. The website lists a PRIVATE tour for two for $125 per person. Which is $250 for two. And 60% off that is $100. (I also checked Yelp, btw, before buying, and the company wasn't listed...which is why I'm doing my due-diligence and posting this.) So I obviously assumed that's what we were getting--a private tour--and bought the Groupon. When I got a confirmation email for our upcoming reservation, I noticed that it was sent to multiple recipients. I responded to confirm that we were going to be getting a private tour, and was told that we were scheduled in a group of 12. I never would have purchased it if I had an indication it was a large group, because we are experienced climbers looking for individualized instruction. When I emailed my frustration, asking them what they could do to help fix the situation, they replied that I was the first person to ever think it was a private tour. Fine, but that's clearly because I was the first person to dig through their website to compare the deal; do that, and the conclusion that it's a private tour is a no-brainer. They suggested I contact Groupon for a refund, which I'm doing, and offered me a long-shot on possibly scheduling a future date with a more experienced group. I rarely take time to post negative reviews, figuring that most complaints are the result of personal preference. But I feel really misled by this company. I think they're using Groupon to offer a service not listed on their website--a $50 per person large-group tour--and misrepresenting the value of it in Groupon's advertising. If you want to go with them, make sure you know what you're getting.
