Located on top floor of sweet octopus. They have bubble teas, as well as a variety of savory and sweet empanadas. The crust of the empanadas are super light and crispy with the right amount of chewiness. Hands down the best empanadas I've had in Duluth. The dulce de leche empanada includes cheese, but it works and it's AMAZING. They can get a bit costly as they are $4-$5 each, but they are a decent size! Definitely will be back soon! read more

Absolutely stellar. Made the trek from Decatur to Duluth to grab these empanadas and it absolutely lived up to the 5 star hype. My order was ready when I arrived and curbside pickup was a breeze. The empanadas themselves are wonderful and all packed a bunch of flavor. I got the beef, pork, and chicken as well as a fig and mascarpone and banana and Nutella for dessert. Uber Eats had a $8 off $20 special, so for 3 huge and 2 medium empanadas, $17 felt like a great deal. The beef empanada was very good, but it was the bbq pork that was the star for me. The meat itself had incredible flavor without being slathered in sauce and it maintained its juciness even after I heated it up in the oven. The chicken empanada is in my fridge as 2 huge empanadas left me full with just a bit of room to spare for dessert. While I didn't care for the fig and mascarpone, if you like figs, this seems like a winner as they actually put a fig in the empanada. I thought the ratio of fig:mascarpone was off (too much fig), but the banana and Nutella more than made up for it. I probably could have eaten 4 of them--buttery crust, banana and Nutella are an absolute classic pairing, and just the right amount of each. I would not hesitate to return--a complete winner in my book. read more

So this may be a bit harsh, but when I went with my family for the food truck Friday's we went in expecting good empanadas, bubble tea, and service. We couldn't have been more wrong. When we ordered, the cashier wasn't being helpful at all. When we asked about the white rose (?) drink he said, "it's rose flavored." How was that supposed to help? Who knows what a rose tastes like? Eventually we ordered two empanadas and a strawberry and taro crystal boba drink. Their little alarms to tell us when our food was ready didn't work and they reset them after we asked about it, but the whole line that was behind us was gone after this period of time. The girl who was at the very end of the line when we ordered had already gotten her order and so did everyone else but us. After asking, they finally gave it to us. To summarize, the empanadas were chewy in all the wrong places, the flavors were not good, and the drink had HARD boba. Not chewy, not popping, HARD. The strawberry flavoring tasted decent, but after a few sips it began to make me nauseous. I know I don't have a sensitive stomach, so this wasn't a good sign. The only reasoning for the singular star would be that a worker apologized for the wait. In conclusion, the food was overpriced and DEFINITELY not at all worth it. (Also, this was the place on the second floor. I'm unsure if they're two different places, but just so you know we have nothing against the first floor.) read more

A buddy and I had a taste for something different and we struck gold! First, the Empanada House was not easy to find. Not because it's out of the way but because of some challenges the owner has with signage. It's upstairs inside another restaurant with prominent signage (Sweet Octopus). But the point is, the empanadas are fantastic! If you've not had one, it's a bit like a Cuban calzone, but smaller. They have a choice of many entree empanadas (pulled pork, beef, chicken, pepperoni, Korean BBQ style) along with two or three "dessert" empanadas. The pulled pork and Korean BBQ were delicious! Flaky crust and plenty of tender and flavorful stuffing. Not spicy, just tasty. A big eater might eat three but two were plenty for me. We finished lunch with an apple empanada which was fantastic, like a mini Cuban apple pie in a flaky empanada crust. Not a lot of sides on the menu. They're not needed and the owner chooses to focus on the empanadas, and it shows. They serve plenty of unique beverages from soft drinks to fruit teas, and the very gracious and pleasant owner gave us a taste of their sake infused mango and strawberry frozen drinks which were equally delicious. Had it not been lunchtime, one would definitely have been an accompaniment to the best empanadas I've had. The atmosphere is very comfortable and casual. There's plenty of seating inside and two very nice balconies with counter type seating overlooking all the Duluth square action. Do yourself a favor while you're in the square, or just take a ride as we did. Skip the standard bar food and overrated BBQ and try The Empanada House. You'll be going back as we definitely will. I searched for "empanadas near me" and multiple places popped up. I want to serve empanadas as part of the menu for a party I am hosting. I planned to try as many places as possible to decide which place serves the best empanadas and then place a large catering order for my party. By far Empanada House was the best. I ordered multiple types of empanadas and taste tested all of them. Each one was better than the next. I was impressed with the flavor, the meaty contents, the crispy dough exterior, and how each empanada is identified with its name on the exterior. How clever! Because the party I am hosting will require that I pick up my empanadas earlier than they are normally open, I spoke with the owner to see if they could accommodate me - he assured me that I could place my order online the day before and give them a quick call and he would open earlier for me to pick up my hot and freshly cooked empanadas for my event. The owners are great! Completely invested in making your dining experience delicious and pleasant. I came back a second time and ordered all the same variety of empanadas again to check to make sure I wasn't just impressed with Empanada House because the others I tried were so bad. I was not disappointed. The Empanada House was consistent and delicious and every empanada ordered was as fabulous as the first visit. I don't usually go out of my way to write reviews but this time it's been on my mind. First I want to start this by saying that I genuinely liked the down stairs food. I ordered a pad see ew beef and it was absolutely delicious. The girl that took my order was friendly too. Then I ordered a dulce de leche empanada and it went all down hill. For an empanada that wasn't even the size of my fist I waited a whole thirty minutes for a young man to rudely thrust this tiny little pastry on my table and stomp away. Then I figured why not give them the benefit of the doubt and I tried the damn thing. I'm sorry but anyone saying that these empanadas are good have never actually tried a real empanada. It was soggy and while one half was the dulce de leche that I thought I ordered the rest (dare I say most) of it was just cheese. Honestly for the price I paid and the half an hour I waited it was so not worth it. I'd be happy staying downstairs and eating the great Thai food but I'm never eating those shitty empanadas again, and I don't recommend you go either. read more
