Right above Sweet Octopus, Empanada House surprised me with their menu. I suppose it shouldn't have because we're in Duluth, but they sell bubble tea here. I was curious about their tea, but there was a winter combo at the time that caught my eye more. I got their hot chocolate, traditional beef empanada, and bulgogi BBQ empanada. It was my first time having such a flaky empanada. The dough is nice and tasted good, I like that it's baked instead of fried, which I'm more used to. Out of both the empanadas I got, I would recommend the traditional beef because of the unexpected raisins that worked pretty well with the beef filling. The bulgogi was alright. The meat itself was a bit dry but the BBQ sauce helped with that. The hot chocolate was milky and great for the cold weather. Next to ordering, there's a fridge for bottled drinks and chilled empanadas. At the time, they only had beef and bulgogi, but I think it's cool that you can bake them at home at a later time. Since Sweet Octopus and Empanada House are in the same building, they seem to share seating space and the bathroom, which is on the lower floor. Food comes out fast and makes for a nice quick bite. There's one empanada that's for vegetarians, though I'm not sure if they don't use eggs for the dough, so vegans should check on that. Sweet empanadas sound good, and if I were to come again, I'd prob get one to try. read more

While my friend was ordering food at Sweet Octopus, I went upstairs to get some empanadas because that's what I was craving and had seen many good reviews about this place's. I ordered the goulash and traditional beef which came up to be around $10, and didn't take too long for it to be prepared. I brought my food downstairs, and there's plenty of tables to sit both upstairs and down. The flavor was flavoring!!!!! It was hot, fresh, and perfectly paired with the salsa they gave me!! I highly recommend if you're craving empanadas, but if not they also have other menu items like drinks and smoothie bowls. I have been here twice recently with a friend and I love it. The people who work here are friendly, and the upstairs area has always been clean and spacious. Sweet Octopus can get a bit loud, I like that the upstairs area is more chill. The empanadas we ordered were good! I liked the Hawaiian one the most. I ordered the beef and the Hawaiian, and my friend ordered the chicken and the guava. My friend and I agreed that we weren't that big of a fan the seasoning used in the chicken and beef empanadas but they were still high quality. The empanada itself is great, the outside is warm and flaky. The sauces that came with the meal were good. We also both really enjoyed the bubble tea. We will definitely be back! read more

I've been here many times for empanadas and the menu has grown so much over the years and so have their empanadas. These empanadas have a great chewy texture in addition to the crunch that is flaky and really yummy. overtime, they've gotten smaller (which is understandable) but the recipe for the bulgogi is different too based on my and other's experiences. They are $4.75 and about 4 inches wide. I usually get 3 to share which is good for a small meal/appetizer for me. We mix and match with food from sweet octopus downstairs often! My usual go tos are the pulled pork and the bulgogi one. I noticed the bulgogi one tasted differently this time, more minced and in a sweet sauce. I preferred the texture and taste of it before better because it tasted more like bulgogi texture and taste wise but now I can't tell it's bulgogi. If you like sweet flavors, that one may be a good fit for you. The traditional beef is more balanced in comparison with boiled eggs and olives inside- unique and tasty. the pulled pork comes with a delish guava sauce that we really like! Love that there's a lot of seating upstairs where the empanada house is located and lots of bubble tea and acai bowls. Food comes out relatively quickly within 10 minutes! Right above Sweet Octopus, have to go inside and up the stairs! The upstairs seating and balcony is always quiet and has a really nice view of the town center. They serve different empanadas, boba, smoothies and milkshakes upstairs. I ordered the impossible empanada which was $5 and this is what it came out looking like. It was much smaller than what I thought and was just really underwhelming. There was no sort of seasoning or really any flavor from the empanada at all, it was just the typical impossible burger flavor put inside of the flaky empanada dough. The place looks fresh & has comfortable seating inside & outside. The register/ server was pleasant to talk to & gave us her recommendations of the most popular empanadas. First time coming to Duluth downtown during daytime. I'm here on a nice Sunday noonish, parked at the public parking lot for free there are also parking spots nearby the restaurants for free as well, but we wanted to take a walk and enjoy the nice fall weather. This area is fun for snack/quick bites and drinks/bubble tea while sunbathing or simply people watching or watching leaves falling. The price is decent, similar to typical bubble tea/bakery place. Took me a little bit to find this place, but it's located in Sweet Octopus. There is plenty of outdoor seating if you're not comfortable with indoor dining quite yet. My boyfriend and I got the pulled pork, bulgogi, and fig & mascarpone empanadas. They have a good variety of savory and sweet empanadas. The portion size is also generous (we were stuffed after eating three). Unlike some of the other empanadas I've had before, the encasing used for the empanadas are more pastry like, which makes them a little more buttery. The best thing about this place was that sakerita I had. I found this place scrolling through yelp a while ago so I was so excited to try the empanadas. Honestly, I should've known better. You HAVE to go with your gut feeling in some situations . The place smelled burnt before we even walked up the stairs so I should've known right then. I think they had their oven on too high because the outside was crispy but some of the inside was doughy. The flavor of the meat was subpar as well. It lacked in taste severely. Maybe it was just a bad day for them, who knows. The best one with the most flavor and tender meat was the pork empanada. I tried pulled pork, goulash, beef, and bulgogi. I was so disappointed in the bulgogi one. I love Korean food so I was excited to taste that one but it was tough and the flavor was not bulgogi at all. The Thai tea I had with my friend tasted bad. It had a weird sour taste as if the milk went bad. Then my friend went to tell them and ask for a replacement but they said that we were wrong and they always have fresh ingredients. How is it that my tea had a sour taste? We didn't even ask for money back. Just a fix. The empanadas are good but I would not recommend with how they handled customers. Maybe get your bubble tea elsewhere.
